I’ve been reading a lot of Ezekiel Chapter 38 and on with Talmud Sanhedrin 97a and on and it seems from there that the order of events before the coming of mashiach need to happen in order for mashiach ben david to come.

So my question is: have these event already taken place in said order and if they have why do us Jewish people continue to be persecuted during modern times.

Additionally, if the last battle against Israel will be with gog unagog and cohorts attacking israel isn’t it supposed to be in the land of Israel against all of israel.

And hashem on that day will destroy all of Israel’s enemies and their corpses will be left for food of the beasts of the field and birds in the sky to feed on a great feast for them.

If this has happened already, When in history has this happened?

Negative prophecies do not have to happen (see H. Yesode ha-Torah 10:4). May we merit to never know from such a difficult period. Furthermore we are not to obsess over the order of the details of how the messianic era will unfold. Once it has transpired, everything will be understood in its proper context (see H. Melakhim 12:2)

If this has happened already, When in history has this happened?

The plain reading of these events have not transpired yet. I am aware there are some that argue that it is beginning to happen, but to them, like you I would point again to the Rambam on how misplaced speculation concerning such matters is.

  • Your opening citation from Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah is accurate, although there is much more to that law than you are conveying. But from “Furthermore” onward, is unsupported opinion and doesn’t answer the actual question. This answer needs a lot of improvement. Commented Jun 20 at 1:31
  • "there is much more to that law than you are conveying" there is narry a halakhah that tomes cannot be written about. "“Furthermore” onward, is unsupported opinion and doesn’t answer the actual question This answer needs a lot of improvement." Agree to disagree. All the best brother. Commented Jun 20 at 12:05
  • "Once it has transpired, everything will be understood in its proper context". The presumption by Rambam in this halacha is that once things have transpired, they will be understood in their proper context. But that presupposes that 1) That the observer knows the contextual requirements & parameters established in the Torah, meaning as conveyed in Prophets and mesorah. and 2) What historical events during the generation of the final redemption relate. Remember, the Prophets in Tanach pertain to each and every generation. Only blessings for good my friend! Stay safe. Commented Jun 20 at 13:18

This will be an unorthodox answer:

Prophetic visions are not absolute. If you read the Book of Daniel, the apocalypse was supposed to happen during the time of the Maccabees, but that clearly did not happen. Prophetic visions are a nudge towards our own actions and objectives. Prophetic visions are not so much a full proof vision of the future, but a "nudge" for us to do something.

Look at 1 Kings 22:1-23 to see what I mean.

Expect the unexpected.

  • @TomW it seems that you are far less willing to interpret this answer with a limmud zekhuth than I am... I am reading the answer through an Orthodox lens. You can read it otherwise, I am choosing not to. There is nothing in this comment that cannot be interpreted in a traditional light. Indeed, were we so motivated, we could go through it line by line and find a paralleling statement in rabbinic literature elsewhere. Commented Jun 18 at 15:47
  • There is a general principle in the Torah regarding all the books of the Prophets included in the Tanach, that those books were included by the men of the Great Assembly because they applied specifically to each and every generation. The balance of your answer is unsupported opinion that makes no attempt to answer the actual question. Commented Jun 20 at 1:35

We don't know, and anyone claiming to currently know is giving false information

Rambam laws of kings chapter 11 goes through some prophecies of Moshiach and states that these matters are hidden even from the prophets themselves, and only when Moshiach comes will we know the true meaning of the prophecies.

  • You have claimed that you are a Lubavitcher in comments. Are you aware that the Rebbe said explicitly way back in 1991 that Moshiach was already in the world, soul dressed in a body? What do you think So in that context, how would you understand the statement from Rambam that you are mentioning? Commented Jun 19 at 22:26
  • @YaacovDeane no he never Said that. He wished that that would happen. And means nothing about the prophecies. And I never said I'm a "Luvavitcher". I don't believe that term has any meaning Commented Jun 19 at 22:39
  • Your denial of something that Rebbe said, reviewed and published indicates that you are unaware of his teachings. I also don’t understand why you repeatedly misspell Lubavitch as “Luvavitch”. Only blessings. Commented Jun 20 at 0:13
  • @YaacovDeane where did he say what you claim he said? Where is it published? Commented Jun 20 at 0:20
  • Go and learn rather than making declarative statements that he, meaning the Lubavitcher Rebbe never said such a thing. My suggestion would be search the phrase and then look for the published talk on one of the Chabad sites. You will benefit from doing the legwork to actually learn the sicha. Commented Jun 20 at 1:22

The traditional teaching about the war of Gog and Magog is that it is a 3 part war. This is like is found in Midrash Tehillim, chapter 118:12-13. The overall description is found in Sefer Avkat Rochel by Rabbeinu Makir which breaks the entire process into ten signs.

Signs 1 and 2 describe the rise of the Axis Powers (Germany, Italy and Japan) in World War II and the beginning of the Holocaust as well as the race for a nuclear weapon, the heat of the sun that will be a remedy for some and a terrible affliction for others.

The first part of the war is associated with the prophecy from Yoel 3:3 describing the blood, fire and columns of smoke in the shape of date palm trees (what we describe as mushroom clouds). That is the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th at 8:15 in the morning and August 9th at 11:02 in the morning, 1945 (27 Menachem Av, 5705 and 30 Menachem Av, 5705) in WW II.

For details, see the film White Light/Black Rain.

This event also corresponds to erev Rosh Chodesh Elul and the time when, after the prayers and petitions of Moshe Rabbeinu, Israel was forgiven for the sin of the Golden Calf.

This is in sign 3 from Sefer Avkat Rochel. So in terms of context, the war of Gog and Magog has definitely begun.

This is also described in Midrash Tanchuma, parshat Vayera 16:1.

The detonation of these two nuclear weapons over a three day span is a primary sign for the beginning of the first part in the three part war of Gog and MaGog like is mentioned by Ramchal in his Tikkunim Chadashim, Tikkun 60 which says:

It says these two nuclear detonations are the sign that the wars of Gog and Magog have begun. That Gog and King Moshiach are in the world physically, souls in bodies when this occurs. Rambam in Igeret Teiman connects this to Yirmiyahu 30:7 and says:

it needs must refer to the war of Gog and Magog which will take place some time after the arrival of the Messiah.

George H. W. Bush (41) was serving in the Pacific theater of the United States Navy preparing for the invasion of Japan. Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson was working for his father-in-law, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn (the Rebbe of Chabad at that time) in Brooklyn, NY.

Following the detonations, Japan surrendered on September 2, 1945. Bush was discharged from the Navy and immediately enrolled in the accelerated degree program at Yale University and joined the Skull & Bones Fraternity.

Ramchal details the race for and development of the nuclear technology, from fission weapons to fusion weapons and how the world steps back from this precipice at that time through G-d’s mercy.

A very significant detail from Ramchal is that he indicates this is aimed at rectifying the causes for war which originate from the burdens upon humanity from both Adam and Kayin.

Adam’s debt, which introduced death, was over reproduction of the species and the consumption of resources not intended for you, meaning food provided by the Creator

Kayin’s debt, which introduced murder, arose from jealousy, the violation of לא תחמוד.

This is discussed in the Tikunei Zohar cited and in great detail in the Tikunim Chadashim, Tikun 56-57-58-59 and 60 of the Ramchal. It is also the subject of chapter 11 from the prophecy of Yishayahu, the Prophet of the Final Redemption.

But he emphasizes that the balance of this three part war will happen in the future with certainty.

These remaining two parts of the war of Gog and MiGog are usually referred to as the Pekidah and Zechirah. 6 1/2 years separate the Pekidah and the Zechirah.

The Pekidah is like the dress rehearsal for the actual performance. The Pekidah is associated with the years 1990 through 1994.

The Zechirah is the actual performance. Every paradigm for the final redemption that was established during the Pekidah will be seen in the Zechirah, but in a way of permanence. The Zechirah begins in the year 2001 and continues to this day.

The second part of the war is primarily associated with Moshiach ben Yosef and the attempt to murder him by the Anti-Moshiach, Armilus, the evil one. Armilus is a powerful leader at that time in the land of Israel. He is associated with the Erev Rav. For more details about Armilus and the Erev Rav, see this link: https://judaism.stackexchange.com/a/142594/7303.

This is all described in the seventh sign from Sefer Avkat Rochel.

This attempted, but unsuccessful murder has also already happened. For details, see Ari Halberstam, Rashid Baz, Chessed Halberstam, Ari's father, Devorah Halberstam, Ari's mother and the 1994 Brooklyn Bridge shooting. The shooting, which occurred in 1994, is the year 5754 תשנ״ד on the Jewish calendar.

The second part of the war with Gog, which is associated to the Pekidah, is the first Gulf War known as Operation Desert Storm, which was perpetrated by Saddam Hussein against the state of Israel. Saddam Hussein believed himself to be the reincarnation of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babel from the Tanach.

The President of the United States at that time was George H.W. Bush (Bush 41), whose secret fraternity name at the Skull and Bones Fraternity from his time at Yale was Gog. It is definitely considered to be the beginning of the final redemption and is definitely the Days of Moshiach. The description of this war, which was entered into by the United States in 1991 and its association with the beginning of the final redemption can be found in Yalkut Shimoni on Isaiah, Remez 499:1-2, which says:

שנו רבותינו בשעה שמלך המשיח בא עומד על גג בית המקדש והוא משמיע להם לישראל ואומר ענוים הגיע זמן גאולתכם

At the time that Melech HaMoshiach comes…he says, “humble ones, the time of your redemption has arrived!”

The year 1991 is the year 5751 תשנ״א on the Jewish calendar.

According to traditional teachings from the Torah found in Avkat Rochel, Moshiach ben Yosef will either be murdered or die during this stage which precipitates a crisis of faith for many, especially those closest to him.

The Vilna Gaon, as found in Sefer Kol HaTor, chapter 1:6 and chapter 5:9 states that because of the prayers of all the righteous Jews throughout the generations on behalf of Moshiach ben Yosef, he will successfully complete his mission before he dies. He calls this the principle of עוד יוסף חי.

This same teaching from the Vilna Gaon is also found in Sefer Likkutei HaGra by Rabbi Yitzchok Isaac Chaver, one of the closest, recognized students of the Vilna Gaon in section, סוד האותיות, חפ״ף, דף מ:א (80), ד״ה והוא בדרגא דצשיח בן יוסף וכו׳ and also in section, כתוב זאת, דף סג:א which says:

This also follows the teaching of Ramchal in his מאמר הגאולה, פרק סג-סד and in גנזי רמח״ל, Friedlander edition, page 105.

In keeping with what Rambam writes in the Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Melachim, chapter 11, Halacha 5, this means that he will not be murdered by the agent of Armilus, but will die of natural causes.

The process of Moshiach ben Yosef going through histalkut, similar to what we find in connection with Yaacov Avinu in parshat VaYechi 49:29-33, was in order to perform what is described as the spiritual ingathering of the exiles

In kabbalistic and Chassidic teachings this is referred to as the gathering of the Holy Sparks. These Sparks are why the Jewish people went into exile in the first place. Every commandment performed and every blessing recited from the beginning has been part of that gathering. Part of Moshiach’s purpose is to complete that process, to return those Sparks to the place from which they originated.

This follows the teachings from the Ari z”l like is found in Eitz Chaim:

When the soul of Moshiach ascends from this world, those Sparks ascend with him. For a detailed explanation of this, see letter 130 from the Igrot Kodesh of the fifth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Shalom Dovber, volume 1, pp. 309-310, beginning with the words: אמנם בדבר אשר יצא אחד מקהל עדתם וכו׳

This is what is described in the Zohar, parshat Toldot, 139a:66-67, which says:

We learned, the Ingathering of the Exiles precedes the resurrection of the dead by forty years, like that they said, and Yitzchak was forty years old. What were they doing? Rabbi Kahane said in the name of Rabbi Broka, from the Ingathering of the Exiles until the resurrection of the dead, how many troubles, how many wars will arise for Israel, and happy is the one who finds refuge from them like is written, (Daniel 12:1) At that time, your people will find refuge, all who are written in the Book. Rabbi Judah said during this time, (Daniel 12:1) many will be clarified, purified and refined. Rabbi Yitzchak said during this time, (Zechariah 13:9) Refined, like one refines silver and probed, like probing for gold. And in those days, there will be days when they will say (Kohelet 12:1) I have no desire in them, and the transition through these troubles until the resurrection of the dead lasts forty years.

Several details to note from this section of the Zohar are:

  1. That it associates the 40 year time period between the histalkut of Moshiach and the beginning of the resurrection to Yitzchok Avinu becoming 40 years old.

  2. The commentaries to this emphasize that it was after a three year break from his being offered as a korban Olah at the Akeida.

  3. They also point out that it was in regard to allowing his future wife, Rivkah, time to mature.

  4. They also point out that during this time, Yitzchok was sent away by his father, Avraham, to learn in the Yeshiva of Shem and Ever like it recounts in Sefer HaYashar.

The Zohar emphasizes that from this event, meaning being offered as a korban Olah similar to the murder of Ari Halberstam which occurred 18 Adar, 5754) and being sent to the Yeshivah (meaning הישיבה של מעלה, like the histalkut of the Lubavitcher Rebbe which took place on 3 Tammuz, 5754), until the time of the resurrection 40 years later, will be very difficult for Israel. But it also holds out a remedy that all those who are written in the book will find refuge.

The three year break between the Akeidah of Yitzchok and his marriage to Rivkah was to allow for a necessary period of maturation. This corresponds to the three year break between the beginning of the final redemption and Days of Moshiach, which coincided with the first Gulf War in 5751 and the histalkut of the Rebbe and murder of Ari Halberstam in 5754.

The different terms for refinement used in the Zohar have connotations of both refinement, improvement and unification. That the Jewish people become more unified during these times of trials, to be גוי אחד בארץ like is reported by Rav Nachman Bar Yitzchok to be in the Tefillin shel Rosh of G-d (tractate Brachot 6a:20).

It was with this in mind that the Lubavitcher Rebbe initiated his global campaign that every Jewish person should participate in purchasing and acquiring a letter in the writing of new Sifrei Torah. That G-d, the Torah and Israel are one.

The third stage of the war of Gog and Magog begins, according to Hai Gaon as quoted in the Tur Shulchan Aruch, 490:1 in the month of Tishrei, specifically on Hoshanna Rabba which is associated with the time of the sealing of judgement of the 70 nations. It was precipitated by the bombing on the World Trade Center of September 11, 2001 (23 Elul, 5761, 6 1/2 years after the histalkut of the Rebbe) and marks the beginning of the Zechirah.

The bombing of the World Trade Center is associated with both the country from which Gog arose in the Tanach and also with Alexander (the great) of Macedonia and the prophecy of Yechezkel 38:4, like is explained in the following links.

https://judaism.stackexchange.com/a/76146/7303

The United States began bombing in Afghanistan on October 7, 2001 which was Hoshanna Rabba night. The President of the United States who ordered this attack was George W. Bush (Bush 43), who is the son of the previous President Bush, literally, George from George, גוג מגוג.

For more details on the subject of the identity of Gog miGog, see the following link: https://judaism.stackexchange.com/a/137627/7303

This third part of the war is associated in Sefer Chesed l'Avraham by Rabbi Avraham Azulai, section Sod HaMikvah, Even Shetiyah, Ain HaKoreh, 59:1-5 with a specific stage of the final redemption mentioned in the prophecy of Zechariah 13:2 which says:

In that day, too—declares L-rd of Hosts—I will erase the very names of the idols from the land; they shall not be uttered anymore. And I will also make the “prophets” and the impure spirit vanish from the land.

This is connected in the Zohar with the period mentioned by Ulla in tractate Sanhedrin 98b where he says:

Ulla says: Let the Messiah come, but after my death, so that I will not see him, as I fear the suffering that will precede his coming.

and it will culminate in what is referred to as the great and awesome Day of the L-rd, like is mentioned in Yoel 3:4 and Malachi 3:23 when all the nations will be judged similar to the text of the U'Natanah Tokef prayer recited on Rosh HaShanah.

Two details concerning the prophecies of Yoel and Malachi that should be emphasized are:

  1. The difficult times mentioned by Yoel are part of what we are living through now. Those difficult times are associated with the process of removing the Spirit of Impurity from the world. and like Yoel states, the difficult period is prior to the Great and Awesome Day of the L-rd. Those difficult times are also associated with the specific prophecy of Ovadiah, which deals with the collapse of Edom. Edom is associated with the United States in this generation. Ovadiah states that the collapse of the nation will be the result of the leader allowing the enemies of his country to invade through the southern border, deluding himself into thinking that they are actually his allies.

And 2) Malachi states clearly that G-d will send us Eliyahu the Prophet before the Great and Awesome Day of the L-rd.

That is explicitly mentioning the resurrection of Eliyahu which is discussed in tractate Sukkah 52b. Eliyahu is among the first individuals to be resurrected during the final redemption.

Those mentioned explicitly in Sanhedrin based upon these Prophets are: King David, Adam, Seth, Methuselah, Avraham Avinu, Yaacov Avinu, Moses Rabbeinu, Yishai, King Saul, Shmuel HaNavi, Amos HaNavi, Zephaniah HaNavi, King Tzedekiah, Moshiach ben David, Eliyahu HaNavi, Moshiach ben Yosef and Malchitzedek the Priest of Yerushalayim.

The resurrection, which is actually part of the final redemption, occurs 206 years before the completion of the sixth millennium, meaning in the year 5794, which is ten years from now.

That year, 5794 is also 40 years after the murder of Ari Halberstam and the histalkut of the Lubavitcher Rebbe mentioned above, which both occurred in 5754 like the Zohar indicated.

This beginning of the resurrection is mentioned both from Moshe Rabbeinu in parshat Nitzavim 30:15 as explained by Rabbeinu Bechaye and also in the prophecy from King Solomon in Shir HaShirim, 8:12-14 following the commentaries of Ramban beginning with the words האלף לך שלמה גו׳ and also Tzaror HaMor.

This tradition, that resurrection for some individuals is actually part of the final redemption, meaning after Moshiach's initial appearance and a necessity for Moshiach ben David to successfully complete his mission is also the view found in tractate Yoma 5a concerning the necessity for Aharon HaKohen to be physically present to reinstitute the Temple service.

It is also in keeping with the requirement from Rambam in Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Melachim 11:4, that Moshiach must successfully complete his tasks. The third Temple is eternal. It must be completed by someone who is eternal physically. This necessitates resurrection.

In this context, that Shir HaShirim 8:12-14 is a prophecy from Shlomo HaMelech dealing with the conclusion of the final redemption by Melech HaMoshiach, which includes the beginning of the resurrection like is found in tractate Sukkah 52b which states that among the first fifteen to be resurrected will be Moshiach ben David and Eliyahu HaNavi (a tradition based upon the prophecies of Zechariah 2:3-4 and Micah 5:4-5), it is worth pointing out the precise wording from Shir HaShirim 8:14 which says:

בְּרַ֣ח ׀ דּוֹדִ֗י וּֽדְמֵה־לְךָ֤ לִצְבִי֙ א֚וֹ לְעֹ֣פֶר הָֽאַיָּלִ֔ים עַ֖ל הָרֵ֥י בְשָׂמִֽים׃

Hurry My beloved, who will appear to you as a gazelle or a young stag, over the hills of spices!

That the term דּוֹדִ֗י is understood to be a reference to Moshiach ben David with the full spelling being דויד. This unusual spelling is alluding to the point when Moshiach ben David and Moshiach ben Yosef are made one, like is mentioned in Yechezkel 37:19 which says:

This also follows the teaching of Rabbi Shimshon of Ostropoli in his commentary to Sefer Karnayim, chapter 14 as well as the teaching of the Vilna Gaon from Sefer Kol HaTor who explains that the gematria of משיח בן יוסף משיח בן דויד is 1000. This refers to the 1000 years of the sixth millennium that are associated with the Days of Moshiach like mentioned in the commentary of Ramban quoted above.

There is also another commentary to Sefer Karnayim by Rabbi Eliezer ben Yitzchok Fischel called Parashat Eliezer who explains in his introduction that this sign of the union of Yosef and David is in many places throughout the Torah and was even the concept behind the Mishneh Torah of the Rambam which is also called Yad HaChazakah יד החזקה and is comprised 14 י״ד books covering the entire written and oral Torah beginning with the laws which form the Foundations of our belief and ending with the laws pertaining to King Moshiach up to the World to Come.

The prophecy in Shir HaShirim 8:14 emphasizes that Moshiach will appear to you as a gazelle (לִצְבִי֙). The gematria of לִצְבִי֙ is 132. The birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe was the 11th of Nisan, 5662. His birthday in the year 5794, the year given in King Shlomo's prophecy for the beginning of the resurrection, will be his 132 birthday (לִצְבִי֙).

Calling this a traditional answer seems like a big stretch. This is one attempt to match the prophecies to recent events. We will only know the truth after the story has been completed.

@MichoelR If you mean by "big stretch" that you find the connections to our historical timeline surprising, I understand and would agree completely. But my reference to "traditional teaching" is that there are no wildly divergent or obscure sources for the teaching. The tradition is from Tanach, mainstream, standard Midrashim and other sources and recognized and accepted Tannaim, Gaonim, Rishonim, Acharonim and Gadolim Acharonim over the last 2000 years and from virtually all branches (East and West) of Orthodox Jewish tradition. @YaacovDeane Plus your own attachment of all those traditions to various recent events. That's the major part of your post, and the part that you aren't acknowledging.

@YaacovDeane my favourite proof that you are right about that is the "spread your wings like an eagle and make your nest among the stars" = moon landing ("the eagle has landed")
