Here it is, folks, just as we promised. The full declassification of Fund I, with no redactions. We're talking about what it took to build Blume’s inaugural fund, how we constructed the portfolio, attracted the best founders, how the fund has performed, and stories of our successes. We proudly present to you the ‘Omega Files.’ *Fund I performance* In the realm of venture capital, performance speaks louder than words! So let's start with performance. We raised INR 100Cr (USD 20M) in 2010 as our inaugural fund, which was soon followed by Fund IA of INR 24.5Cr (USD 4.1M). As we fully exit these funds now, Fund I + IA has already realized ~5x of the invested capital, and we project it to close at ~6x returns by 2024. Here's to dispeling the myths about the vitality of ‘exits’ in the Indian startup ecosystem and establishing a new paradigm for success. (See the first image) *What winning looks like* When we started out, it was believed that the sure-shot path for a startup's success was a nod from the Series A big leagues. After having spent more than a decade in the trenches with our founders, we realize that a successful company is built against all odds, including not being blessed by a star growth-stage fund. Over 70% of our top portfolio companies in Fund I have soared without the early Series A spotlight from the large growth stage Indian funds. (Second image) *Pareto within Pareto* Ever heard of the Pareto Principle? But what about a Pareto within Pareto? Let us explain. We made 78 investments through Fund I + IA. Of these the top 20% or 17 of our portcos generated almost the entire gross total returns. Even within this group, just 3 companies returned nearly 3x of the fund size. Makes you think about the Power Law, doesn't it? (Third image) *Who were our LPs* Creating a fund from scratch in 2010 as first-time fund managers, meant many, many meetings. Almost half of Fund I came through our network and referrals, a testament to our OG team being immersed in the startup ecosystem even before Blume. Note to new/emerging Indian GPs: It is not just about the dollars. Make your presence felt in the ecosystem and invest in building relationships. Saurav Kumar, CEO of Euler Motors, in a conversation with CNBC-TV18, talks about the importance of consistent and long-term subsidies like the FAME scheme for the electric vehicle sector. He emphasizes that stable policies, even with smaller subsidies, are crucial for boosting adoption rates across all vehicle segments. He also highlights the need for continued support through initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and underscores the EV sector's demand for comprehensive support in Budget 2024 to drive growth and innovation. I read a fantastic report on India's startup ecosystem by Blume Ventures. Here's a snapshot of the Indian consumer stack as they see it. The data speaks for itself. Startup founders and investors can clearly see where to focus their efforts. However, this report also raises a question: When we discuss issues like low tax rates, government subsidies, reservations (affirmative action), and inequality, who are we really complaining to? I highly recommend this report to anyone with an opinion on India's growth and development. Together, we can undoubtedly achieve progress.
