Google Stadia Acquires Journey to the Savage Planet Developers

Journey to the Savage Planet will still receive a multi-platform release.

Google Stadia has acquired Typhoon Studios, the developers behind the upcoming Journey to the Savage Planet. Despite the acquisition, Journey to the Savage Planet will still be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

In the official announcement, VP of Stadia Games & Entertainment Jade Raymond said, "Under the leadership of its co-founders, Reid Schneider & Alex Hutchinson, Typhoon Studios has built an incredible team of industry veterans who are committed to the player experience. The Typhoon team will be joining our first Stadia Games and Entertainment studio that is based in Montreal and led by Sébastien Puel."

After leaving Ubisoft in 2017, Typhoon Studios co-founder Alex Hutchinson announced that he would begin his own game studio. At The Game Awards 2018, Journey to the Savage Planet was officially announced as the studio's first project and is currently slated for a January 28, 2020 release date.

The game is described on Typhoon Studios website as, "An upbeat first-person adventure game set in a bright and colorful alien world filled with weird and wonderful creatures." If you'd like to learn more, check out our hands-on preview of Journey to the Savage Planet.

Google Stadia launched in November with a bumpy start, but has since worked out some of its issues from launch. In March, Google announced that it would launch its own first-party game studio — and in October that announcement came to fruition when Stadia Games & Entertainment officially opened.

Google's acquisition of Typhoon Studios will be the first third-party studio to join the Stadia brand and is no doubt part of Google's plan to publish Stadia exclusives.
