Ilia State University in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings

lia State University was included in the Times Higher Education 2022 World University Ranking.

In this ranking, which reflects the results of 1622 institutions worldwide, only two educational-research institutions from Georgia are represented, including one Ilia State University.

For the 2022 ranking, Elsevier’s Scopus database, bibliometric data provider, reviewed and analyzed more than 108 million citations across over 14.4 million research publications and included survey responses from almost 22,000 scholars globally. Overall, there were collected over 430,000 data points from more than 2,100 institutions that submitted data.

The Times Higher Education World University Ranking use 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators, that are grouped into five areas: or “pillars”, which are weighted according to relative importance and provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons.

Pillars

  • Teaching (30%): Learning environment
  • Research (30%): Volume, Income and Reputation
  • Citation (30%): Research Influence
  • Industry Income (2.5%): knowledge transfer
  • International Outlook (7.5%): International staff, Students and research collaborations

As can be seen from the pillars, one of the important categories of the rating (weighted 30%) is "Citation: Research Impact". This category looks at the impact of scientific activities performed by academic and scientific staff on a global level, reputation for research excellence among its peers, based on the responses to THE annual Academic Reputation Survey. The research impact indicator evaluates universities in terms of disseminating new knowledge and ideas. Ilia State University has a relatively high score of 34.6 in relation to the neighboring educational-research institutions in this category (see chart)

This rating also includes the ranking of the universities by subject areas. This year’s Physical Sciences subject ranking table includes 1,227 universities and highlights the universities that are leading across the following disciplines: mathematics and statistics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, geology, environmental sciences, and earth and marine sciences. Among them, Ilia State University held a rather high position - 600+.

In this ranking, Ilia State University showed a particularly high result in the weighting of citation (research impact), which is considered to be the most weighted unit in the physical subject ranking (weighted value 35%). In this regard, the index of Ilia State University was 65.9. For comparison: the citation rate of the University of Tokyo in the Physics Subject Ranking System is 64.3.
