Programme Description
The Master’s Degree Programme Modern Georgian History has been designed as a bilingual, Georgian-English programme bringing together the most advanced intellectual knowledge around the topic. Courses will be taught by professors invited from leading European universities, as well as international and local graduates with a doctoral degree.
Academic resources used in the Programme will include cutting-edge international literature and highly rated works by Georgian scholars. Important part of the study will comprise working with sources and research.
Programme graduates will be able to conduct research in their own and foreign languages, participate in international academic events, publish in peer-review journals, continue doctoral studies at western universities and establish themselves in a competitive environment.
The MA Programme Modern Georgian History is designed to allow students to examine Georgia’s modern and contemporary history within broader transnational and regional contexts. Questions will be addressed and viewed against the backdrop of the processes taking place in the neighbourhood and beyond. The syllabus will contain both theoretical and research components. Practical skills training, including archival research and research design, will also be included.
Requirements for admission
To be admitted to the programme, applicants must pass unified master and university-based exams (English written test and oral exam, B2 level 71+ scores) and an interview.
Purpose:
The purpose of the Master’s Programme is to train a new generation of scholars who will be able to understand the advancements of international historiography, conduct studies in modern and contemporary history and internationalize their research.
Careers
Programme graduates can be employed both in public and private sectors, as well as in international organizations, institutes specializing in politics and international relations, educational and research institutions, archives, libraries, museums, etc.
Graduates will also have an opportunity to pursue studies at doctoral level.
Professors:
Adrian Brisku – Professor at Ilia State University and Charles University in Prague. Adrian speaks fluent Georgian and is an author of a large number of articles and three books on Georgia. He draws parallels among the processes of nation-making in the Balkans, Central Europe and Georgia. This will be the topic Adrian will be exploring with students of our Master’s Programme.
Timothy Kevin Blauvelt – Professor at Ilia State University, whose research focus is on Soviet Georgia. His articles are cited by leading professors interested in Georgia and the Stalin era. Currently Timothy is writing a monograph on the history of Abkhazia under Stalin. In our Master’s Programme, he will be teaching the History of the USSR.
Oliver Reisner – veteran Kartvelologist with near native fluency in Georgian. He is a professor at Ilia State University. One of his most remarkable works is a book on the Society for the Spreading of Literacy among Georgians, the full Georgian translation of which will hopefully be soon available.
Malkhaz Toria – Professor at Ilia State University, who is currently working on the second doctoral dissertation. He has obtained several fellowships (Fulbright, Open Society Georgia Foundation, DAAD, etc) and conducted research at a number of leading universities in Europe and US. Malkhaz is interested in the politics of memory, national memories, schools and theoretical conceptions of historiography. These will be the issues he will be exploring with the students of our Master’s Programme.
David Darchiashvili – Professor at Ilia State University specializing in Russian history. You may know him as a politician, but if you look through his CV, you will find a scholar with international experience, whose research interest lies in the history of Russia. He will be teaching the History of post-Soviet Russia to the students of the programme.
Giorgi Astamadze – holds an MA from the Karlsruhe University, where he is finishing doctoral studies this year. His doctoral dissertation deals with the Caucasian-German relations. Giorgi has authored a number of important publications. In our Master’s Programme, he will be teaching World History between 1914 and 2000 and Totalitarian Regimes (Nazism, Fascism and Communism).
Shota Kintsurashvili – graduate of Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Germany. Presently he is a doctoral student of Theology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany. Both of his dissertations are concerned with the history of modern Georgian Church. Shota will be teaching History of 19th - and 20th- century Religions in Georgia.
Giorgi Gegelia – holds a BA from the University of Bristol, UK and MA from the joint programme of the Queen Mary University of London and University College London (UK). He was awarded a doctoral degree at the European University Institute in Florence. Grigol is an intellectual historian. In our Master’s Programme he will be teaching Research Methodology and Research Design, as well as Transnational Political Thought between 1800 and 1921.
Dimitri Silakadze – Undoubtedly the best expert in military history of Georgia and a frequent guest of television programmes. He is now working on doctoral research dealing with the military forces of the First Republic of Georgia. Dimitri also works for the Georgian National Archives. In our Programme, he will be teaching Military History and Archival Practice.
Irakli Khvadagiani – an academic who has gained wide popularity, one of the founders and presently chief of the Soviet Past Research Laboratory. He has authored numerous important publications, of which most remarkable is a 600-page book about the Constituent Assembly of Georgia and history of self-government in the First Republic of Georgia. He will be teaching Archival Practice in our Master’s Programme.
