The McLaren P1 Gets the LEGO Technic Treatment
With 3,893 pieces, the buildable car features a seven-speed gearbox with two shifter drums, a V8 piston engine, advanced dihedral doors and more.
McLaren Automotive has joined forces with LEGO to create a buildable version of its pioneering supercar, the McLaren P1. Arriving under the LEGO Technic Ultimate Car Concept Series—the brand’s sub-label dedicated to remastering the world’s best sports cars as 1:8 collectibles—the design includes 3,893 pieces and a slew of unique features.
Measuring 5.5 inches high, 23 inches long and 9.5 inches wide, the complex LEGO set boasts a seven-speed gearbox with two shifter drums, suspension, a V8 piston engine, an adjustable rearwing and dihedral doors with advanced opening and closing mechanisms. Notably, each unit comes with a unique serial number that unlocks exclusive behind-the-scenes content around the vehicle’s construction.
“We worked on multiple variations of the car to test different designs,” said LEGO designer Kasper Rene Hansen in a statement. “We also faced a huge challenge with the iconic butterfly doors because they needed a new mechanism to stay open.”
McLaren and LEGO are no strangers to collaboration. The two brands have previously teamed up to create buildable versions of the automaker’s cars for LEGO’s Speed Champions, Icons and Technics labels. However, this latest model marks their most advancement design to date.
The LEGO Technic McLaren P1 will become available to shop via LEGO’s website on August 1. The set will cost $449.99 USD. Take a closer look at the design in the gallery above.
