Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer active during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. He is known in particular for his 1492 AD voyage which landed in the modern-day Bahamas, which kicked off a wave of European exploration and settlement in the Americas.

It should be noted that while Columbus himself was Genoan, his voyages were supported by Spain, and thus the territorial claims that Columbus made were all in the name of Spain.
