LLMs: Mastering Language, Struggling with (pizza) Reality? 🍕 Dive into Anais Monlong's latest op-ed exploring language models and what it will take to overcome their current limitations. GPT-4, Mistral 7b, Llama 3, and their AI counterparts showcase remarkable potential, yet face significant hurdles. They can sometimes suggest unconventional solutions to user questions—like adding glue to pizza (an idea not seen since kindergarten art class) to make the cheese stick to the crust. But why the mix-up? LLMs lack real-world understanding. They categorize based on patterns, not physical truths, leading to occasionally bizarre suggestions. Anaïs argues that "the billion (trillion?) dollar game: Getting LLMs to, well, get it. For this, LLMs may arguably have to die in their current architecture and be reborn differently." With a proven track record in community building and deep insights into the startup ecosystem, Sarah will contribute to amplifying IRIS' presence and scaling our portfolio community initiatives with the #IRISClub. As VCs and Growth investors we attend many events each year across Europe, making sure we're seeing the best of tech wherever it is. Last week at Viva Technology, the IRIS team focused on our core role as VCs: discovering startups with growth potential, investing in them, and helping them scale. Attending and judging pitches, both on and off stage, fuels our commitment to identifying and finance the next wave of groundbreaking early-stage and growth tech ventures. But our involvement goes beyond funding: we leverage our extensive network and expertise to help these companies grow and reach the next level, often starting with international expansion, as highlighted by Anais Monlong on a dedicated panel this year! Our French-German DNA always proved to be a unique and valuable asset, and we were glad to have our German colleagues Thorben Rothe and Jan-Soeren Zinke on stage to meet with startups from across Europe, pitch IRIS the way founders pitch their tech and share market insights and growth tips alongside Julien-David Nitlech with our partner AHK Frankreich / Chambre Franco-Allemande de Commerce et d'Industrie. And as our job is also to support our companies through their complete funding journey, we also took a minute to pose with the cofounder and CEO of our recently exited portfolio company Braincube, Laurent Laporte! On the La French Tech front, we also congratulated 5 outstanding startups and scaleups for their FT120 highlight/renewal: Exotec, Shift Technology, Braincube, LumApps, and Virtuo. Bravo! Growth is about investing in high potential tech companies, supporting them through different expansion stages, and standing with them through exit times and new chapters. LumApps, an IRIS Growth portfolio SaaS company, just announced a strategic investment by Bridgepoint valued at $650m. This marks the exit of existing investors including IRIS alongside Goldman Sachs, Eurazeo, and Bpifrance Large Venture. The LumApps team, led by Sébastien Ricard, did a tremendous job at developing the next-generation of AI-based intranet, growing to 5m users and 700 clients worldwide and achieving profitable growth in the past 5 years. No doubt this new chapter will foster its global leadership backed by a serious investor with whom we already collaborate on Kyriba since 2019. What can we still celebrate in 2024 as Growth and Venture investors? The answer is easy: when our companies perform and enter a new chapter of their story that will confirm their global leadership! Today we're very proud to share that our Growth portfolio tech company LumApps announces a strategic investment by Bridgepoint, marking the exit of IRIS in a deal valued at $650m. As Bridgepoint will acquire a majority control in the leading next-generation intranet provider, founders and senior management remain strongly invested in the company’s equity and business. Headquartered near Lyon, LumApps is a cloud-based social intranet for enterprises, enhancing workplace engagement and productivity by making it easier for employees to work, communicate and collaborate. The scale-up led by Sébastien Ricard develops and offers an AI-powered interface that integrates with companies’ communications platforms and centralises into a single SaaS serving as a digital front door for all employees. Back in 2019 IRIS invested in the $70m Series C funding round alongside Goldman Sachs and Bpifrance Large Venture. Since then, the company delivered impressive results, now counting more than 5 million users and 700 clients worldwide and achieving profitable growth!
