Textile Updates On 17 June, the European Council adopted its position on the revision of the #WasteFrameworkDirective (WFD) with a focus on textile and food waste. This general approach proposes several changes to the European Commission’s draft. For example, the Commission is asked to consider setting targets for the prevention, collection, preparation for re-use and recycling of used textiles by 31 December 2028. Moreover, the general approach addressed the following points, which Landbell Group welcomes: 🧣 a more accurate definition of social enterprises 👔 mandatory appointment of an authorised representative 👗 mandatory entrustment of a producer responsibility organisation, and 👚 an implementing act to specify EPR fee modulation ERP Netherlands and Consorzio ERP Italia Tessile already offer compliance solutions for this stream. How satisfying can recycling be? European Recycling Platform (ERP POLSKA) team in the Warsaw office took part in the collection of electronic waste on the occasion of World Environment Day. Together, they collected 21 kilograms of batteries and as many as 108 kilograms of old and forgotten electrical and electronic devices, such as toasters, straighteners, archaic mobile phones, blenders, lamps, printers, routers, several cables and chargers... 👏 The best thing is that the collected e-waste was exchanged for valuable points as part of the educational campaign "Collect with Class" organized by European Recycling Platform (ERP POLSKA). It supported a primary school that takes part in the campaign and is located near the office - that is: think globally, act locally! Thanks to this, students will receive prizes! 🥇 By taking part in the collection, we not only got rid of some of the (embarrassing) waste from our homes but – most importantly – we helped to recover valuable raw materials and put a smile on the children's faces, showing them that recycling pays off! US state advances battery stewardship legislation The Illinois Compiled Statutes already had some regulations on batteries disposal and recycling. Illinois is now enhancing the existing obligation for retailers, wholesalers and manufacturers to take back used lead-acid batteries as it advances portable batteries stewardship legislation. Senate Bill 3686, which passed both houses of the State´s General Assembly on 24 May 2024, and is now awaiting the Governor´s signature to take effect, shall require that a producer of portable batteries or battery-containing products implements and participates in a battery stewardship plan from January 2026. Kosovo and Montenegro: two non-EU countries implement requirements from SUP Directive In September 2023, Kosovo adopted the Administrative Instruction on Management of Waste Packaging 07/2023, which abolished the previous legislation on packaging. In addition to regulating extended producer responsibility (EPR) for general packaging and giving the producer choice between individual and collective compliance solutions, the Instruction tackled certain single-use products, such as plastic bags and beverage containers. On 20 April 2024, Montenegro replaced its previous waste management legislation with the Law on Waste Management 34/2024. The Law lays down requirements for EPR schemes that are mostly in line with the Waste Framework Directive, and introduces several obligations that are closely in accordance with the Single-Use Plastics (SUP) Directive.
