Watch out startups working on packaging and innovation! There is a room for improvement in projects aiming to meet the new EU packaging rules adopted to reduce waste. The EU Parliament has adopted new measures to make packaging more sustainable and reduce waste. Highlights include: ✔ Reduction Targets of Packaging: 5% by 2030, 10% by 2035, and 15% by 2040; ✔ Bans on Single-Use Plastics: effective January 1, 2030, including packaging for fresh produce, takeaway food, and toiletry miniatures; ✔ Recyclability and Recycling: strict criteria for all packaging recyclability and targets for recycled content; ✔ Encouraging Reuse: targets for reusable beverage and sales packaging by 2030. Frédérique Ries (Renew Europe Group - Vice-Chair) emphasized the innovation and health benefits these regulations will bring. Next, the Council will formally approve the agreement. These steps align with the EU's commitment to a circular economy and environmental protection. The circular economy sector is made of dynamic and innovative solutions responding to the challenges presented by the market and consumption behaviour. By incorporating new waste streams under the Extended Producer Responsibility schemes, policymakers aim to enhance recycling rates, reduce landfill usage, and promote the development of a circular economy where materials are reused and recycled rather than discarded. On July 5, 2023, the European Commission began revising the Waste Framework Directive, focusing on textiles and food waste. In March 2024, the European Parliament set a negotiating position for trilogue talks with the Council, scheduled for discussion on June 17.
