The METREX Productive Cities Expert Group has met in March under the coordination of Adrian Vickery Hill to continue its exploration into making space for re-introducing #production in cities. Over the last two years the group has looked at a number of very interesting case studies in Amsterdam, in The Hague, in Oslo and in various French cities. We also looked at Manchester and the economic clustering of productive activities. A red line between these projects has involved the business models and financial tools available to public authorities to create mixed-use spaces. Preparing the conclusive phase of this journey, we turned to @City of Vienna, which adopted the Productive City Sectoral Plan in 2017, detailing Vienna’s overall 10-year urban development strategy “Stadtentwicklungsplan STEP 2025”. In this session Michael Rosenberger, Senior Strategic Planner at the City of Vienna, reported and reflected on the Viennese experiences of the last years. The Ville et Eurométropole de Strasbourg hosted, in cooperation with the metropolitan urban planning agency ADEUS, the first METREX SAH workshop! The 2 day workshop addressed the ‘Development Process and Land Strategies for Housing Affordability in the metropolitan region’. Its aim is to offer a multi-actor and international platform to raise questions and openly uncover current opportunities and hurdles as well as finding ways of maximizing/controlling their impact on housing affordability. The visit to the redevelopment program transforming the eastern Rhine harbor area of the city opened the works. Day 1 explored the ‘Housing first’ program applying the agents and structure model to explore with participants the relation between actors and institutions to deliver housing for people in need. Day 2 looked at the land instruments and tools, currently in use, addressing affordable housing provision while offering insightful understanding of the ownership models from all over Europe with contributions from Dutch experts Theo Stauttener and Erwin Van Der Krabben, SAH coordinator Claudia Murray and Jose Manuel Ferreira. Outputs and reflection note will be shared soon with the Network! And now we start preparing the 2nd on-site workshop in Utrecht (NL) in early autumn. Stay tuned! We’ve just wrapped up the Dutch leg of the ASSET tour! 🇳🇱 Over the past two and a half days, the ASSET group have visited and held insightful discussions with representatives from Amsterdam, Leiden, and The Hague about their innovative circular strategies. Our journey included a visit to Leiden's circular-built laboratory BioPartner 5 building and an enlightening cycle tour from Amsterdam-Noord to the city's seaport, examining the spatial implications of circularity in the region. Next, we head to Brussels 🇧🇪, Krefeld 🇩🇪, and Duisburg 🇩🇪. Stay tuned for insights and outcomes from this trip as the project explores spatial strategy to boost the circular built environment in the Eurodelta. #circulareconomy #spatialstrategy #builtenvironment

Thank you Theo Stauttener for a brilliant presentation today as part of the SAH Expert Group series of events (https://lnkd.in/dxSJgA6J). His keynote speech titled "Land is the key to Housing" introduced the first SAH Workshop in Strasbourg, where we will be looking at Development Process and Land Strategies for Metropolitan Housing Affordability. This session offered an overview on the land use policies tools which are been tested in The Netherlands. More about his presentation will be available online soon! with Henk Bouwman Claudia Murray #josémanuelferreira

Today Città metropolitana di Torino welcomed partners of the MECOG–CE Interreg Central Europe program in #Canavese, a territory which extends over 1/3 of the metropolitan area. This is where a #FoodDistrict agreement between public and private entities was signed (and includes municipalities, water management consortium and agri-cooperatives, professional agricultural organisations, agro-industrial enterprises, Chamber of Commerce and research institutions, among others) with the aim to #enhance and #value the local agri-food production system. The study visit offered members of the #FoodDistricts Study Cluster first-hand insights and knowledge about what establishing a Food District entails, serving as a capacity-building opportunity for the participants, improving their understanding of the tools and practices with a face-to-face exchange of experiences. The day ended at MOLINO PEILA SPA (Peila mill) a contemporary, yet 100 year old family run, mill infrastructure. Thanks to all the participants and local stakeholders for the fruitful day! with Claudia Fassero Anna Turrini #ireneboggio Michał Kuszewski Małgorzata Golak Wroclaw [Wroclove] #regionbrno Ondřej Cmoriak Kristína Ďuratná City of Ostrava - official Città metropolitana di Torino and its staff

Moderating the METREX Spring Conference Brussels 2024 Roundtable on Governance Structures and Strategies The second day of the METREX Spring Conference 2024 in Brussels, on May 16, gave me the role of serving as a moderator for an interactive roundtable on a very impactful topic: Are we fit for the future? 💡 One of the highlights was the keynote address by Sandeep Shingadia FCILT, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Delivery Integration at Transport for West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), which represents around 4 million people. Sandeep explained how, in collaboration with local authority partners, they are driving inclusive economic growth and investing in transport, skills, and housing. ☑️ Dynamic and engaging discussions sparked around a pressing question: What do we need, in terms of actions and resources, to improve ourselves in order be tailored to metropolitan realities? I am happy to announce that Asociatia de Dezvoltare Intercomunitara Zona Metropolitana Bucuresti (ADIZMB) will be hosting the next METREX - The Network of European Metropolitan Regions and Areas Conference – the autumn edition in Bucharest. We look forward to continuing to provide metropolitan area leaders with a platform to discuss governance structures and strategies. ▶️ Many thanks to the distinguished speakers, old and new friends: Aileen Bouclé, AICP, Maciej Fijalkowski, Prof. Valeria Fedeli, Laura Papaleo, Ph.D. , and Filipe Ferreira. #METREX2024 #MetropolitanEurope #InternationalCollaboration #UrbanDevelopment #SustainableTransport #ADIZMB #WMCA #MiamiDadeTPO #WarsawMetropolitanAssociation #PolitecnicoDiMilano #UrbanPlanning

Should I stay or should I go: Urban sprawl, density, and a new planning agenda for Europe On 29-30 May in Brussels, METREX and its members will participate in a 1.5-day seminar exchanging sustainable and innovative practices concerning urban sprawl and qualitative density among cities and urban planning agencies. The sessions aim to answer: ♻️ How can we transition from quantitative to qualitative density, considering natural resources and their circularity? 🏙 How can we create cities with multiple activity centers to improve the distribution of urban flows? 🏡 What spatial strategies can promote sustainable land use and balanced territorial development, preserving green, blue, and open spaces? Organized through the Belgian Presidency of the Council of European Union, the event will feature exemplary European practices, keynote speeches, field visits in Brussels, and discussions among various cities including Amsterdam, Ghent, Geneva, Toulouse, Turin and Warsaw. The outcomes will be compiled into a publication by perspective.brussels, highlighting selected best practices to promote awareness and enhance future land-use planning in EU cities. This is a perfect follow-up to one of our Spring Conference themes ‘Are we fit for the future?’, co-hosted by perspective.brussels. We will continue exploring this theme in future activities.
