About us
Ocean Rainforest Sp/F (ORF) is a limited company located in the Faroe Islands producing seaweed in open ocean cultivation installations. The company has developed a structural system for macroalgae cultivation in open oceans and related on-shore processes for bringing the seaweed into a storage stable condition. The offshore MacroAlgae Cultivation Rig (MACR) developed by Ocean Rainforest has since 2010 proven itself to be the state-of-the-art offshore seaweed cultivation system in the world with higher growth rates and lower cost than other known offshore systems for similar seaweed species. The system is scalable, survivable, the growth is predictable and sustainable. Since 2014 Ocean Rainforest has supplied the European food and feed market with high quality seaweed products.

NEWS FROM SANTA BARBARA, CA: We are pleased to announce that our Director of California Operations, Eliza Harrison, has been awarded a scholarship to pursue a graduate degree at Duke University - The Fuqua School of Business. Eliza has been with Ocean Rainforest for over seven years, starting as an intern and progressing to co-lead our California operations. She played a key role in securing the first federal waters permit exclusively for seaweed aquaculture in the United States. We extend our best wishes to Eliza as she embarks on this new chapter and look forward to maintaining our connection with her. There is no doubt she will continue to be a leader and steward of the environment! As Eliza transitions to business school, we welcome Doug Bush as the new Director of California Operations. Doug brings over 20 years of experience in aquaculture and working with #giantkelp in the Santa Barbara Channel. His primary mission will be to support the transition of Ocean Rainforest activities in the US from a research and development focus to commercial processing and product offerings for the North American market. We are confident that Doug’s expertise will be invaluable as we move forward. #OceanRainforest #Leadership #Aquaculture #Seaweed #Aquaculture #CaliforniaOperations #NorthAmericanMarket

🌊 The Seagriculture Conference EU 2024 was held in #Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, from June 18-20! 🌍 Under the theme "Bridging Continents," the conference united 224 delegates from 25 countries, representing over 123 companies and institutions. The global interest in #seaweed was evident as participants engaged in discussions, networking, and knowledge sharing. 🌱🌐 The event kicked off with a site visit to our operations on land and in the ocean, offering delegates an up-close look at seaweed cultivation and harvesting at our exposed site in #Gøta, as well as our production and hatchery facilities. Scenic drives and beautiful weather added to the experience. 🚤🏞️ We are incredibly grateful for the positive feedback from our visitors and extend a huge kudos to our staff for their remarkable effort in planning and executing the logistics. 👏 From June 19-20, the conference featured five plenary sessions, two panel discussions, and the new Seaweed Elevator Pitches. Nearly 50 speakers, including international experts from DG MARE, Fermentationexperts , BASF, Unilever, Cargill, and FutureFeed, provided diverse perspectives on seaweed farming, innovations, markets, investments and regulations. 🎤🌿 As the exclusive event sponsors, Ocean Rainforest was thrilled to welcome delegates to the Faroe Islands and showcase our advancements over the past 10 years. We believe the future lies beneath the waves. 🌊 Our mission at Ocean Rainforest is to improve people's well-being and make a unique contribution to our blue planet. We are enjoying the visit from Danish pig farmers at our processing plant and cultivation site in the Faroe Islands. Lots of good talks about the health benefits provided by fermented #seaweed (S. latissima) in the #EP199 feed product from European Protein
𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗶𝗴𝘀 🌊 🐽 Greetings from pig farmers and European Protein from the Faroe Islands. We're here to learn about the production of #seaweed used for pig feed from Ocean Rainforest. Seaweed contains fibres, fatty acids, and bioactive compounds that benefit pig health, which is why two types of seaweed are used in our fermented pig and sow feed #EP199. The brown giants take up less land and need no fertilizers to grow. Seaweed alone cannot replace imported soybean meal. However, combined with fermented EU rapeseed meal, CO2 emissions from the protein in pig feed can be reduced by up to 91%* without increasing the total cost of pig production. Sustainability is also about finding economically feasible feed solutions—no farmer can be green if "in the red." The 2nd Annual Meeting of the Horizon Europe funded project, SeaMark, was held this week. It is a great pleasure to serve as the project coordinator for such an outstanding consortium, which includes 25 partners from industry, research institutions, and universities. We are now halfway through our ambitious goal of producing 12 innovative #seaweed-based products. Significant progress has been made, as evidenced by the 23 deliverable reports completed in the first 18 months of the project. While some of the information remains sensitive, other findings will be available to those interested in seaweed-based market applications. Stay tuned for more updates by following us at www.seamark.eu and https://lnkd.in/est2adeX.
