Hospitalized for Wikistress!!!!!
I am suffering from wikiburnout and chronic Wikistress.

And real life is very much in the way these days.
I probably won't be able to log in as frequently and contribute as much as I would like. Messages left here probably won't get a quick response as before. Your patience would be very much appreciated.

Take care, everyone.
Happy editing.

DYK (#752): Odontoglossum crispum

[edit]

You recently nominated a trio of articles that I created for DYK - thanks for that. Could you do me a big favour? I have just created an article about another orchid, Odontoglossum crispum, which I think merits an entry on DYK, but I'm struggling to find a good hook. Could you take a look at the article and see what you think. Cheers. Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 07:52, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Daemonic Kangaroo. Another new article about pretty flowers? Nicely done! I'll post a hook or two at T:TDYK. I hope you like them. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 15:50, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Updated DYK query On 5 December, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Odontoglossum crispum, which you recently nominated. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

I don't mind removing it. Will do so on my next edit. --PFHLai (talk) 17:52, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ITN Image: 2008 Greek riots

[edit]

Hey! I was just wondering why File:Dec2008-riot-komotini-2 M-cropped - ITN.jpg was resized. I know that there was a discussion about it, but the discussion wasn't based on any grounds - we don't have to make peoples' faces unidentifiable by US law, which is the only binding law in question. So what's up with it? Just curious. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :D 20:10, 14 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The re-sizing has no impact on what appears on ITN, and involved just a few easy clicks, which I didn't mind doing at all. I'd hoped it would address the complainer's concern and end the meaningless discussion on Talk: Main Page right there. Didn't work as well as hoped, though. Just glad that it's over. I posted {{resolved}} as soon as I could, so people won't waste time on it. --PFHLai (talk) 00:56, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of the Peter DeLucia page

[edit]

Hi, I was wondering why you deleted the Peter DeLucia page. I am Peter DeLucia and am a Councilman for the Town of Lewisboro, NY. I was elected in 2005. Thanks you. Peter DeLucia Peter1970 (talk) 17:43, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Peter DeLucia/User:Peter1970. Welcome to Wikipedia.
The "Peter DeLucia" article was tagged with {{db-bio}} by another Wikipedian, probably because the biographical article was deemed to have failed to meet notability criteria as explained on Wikipedia:Notability (people). It was subsequently deleted, along with other problem pages, by me on the following day as part of a routine cleanup. The article did not even have a single complete English sentence, so that would be a second reason for its deletion.
We welcome contributions from anyone. You may want to enrich the Lewisboro, New York article, for instance. However, I would advise against editing on your own biography, per Wikipedia:Autobiography.
Hope this helps. Happy New Year! --PFHLai (talk) 23:01, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Aphididae, DYK for Soybean aphid

[edit]

I hhave blanked Category:Aphididae, and I intend to delete it after the four days' grace period have passed, and I thought you deserved an explanation. Firstly, I'm not sure that either Category:Hemiptera is so big that it needs further splitting, or that there are enough aphids (I make it about ten articles) to warrant a category of their own. Secondly, if such a category were made, it should almost certainly be called Category:Aphids, rather than Category:Aphididae. I'm sure that category will eventually be created and will be useful, but I don't think its time has come yet. --Stemonitis (talk) 08:03, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note, Royalbroil. I've forgotten about this ITN image. I've just deleted it. Someone has uploaded it to WCommons without the full edit history, so I wasn't sure if we need to keep it around. But I suppose it's okay to delete it, since I am responsible for all 18 edits and I wouldn't mind either way. So it goes.... --PFHLai (talk) 19:19, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Working Wikipedian's Barnstar
As you may already know, LoxyBot is back online and updating the main opentasks page (subpages remain manual as before). Thank you very much for a second barnstar, Foxy Loxy. It wasn't that much effort for me, really. Just some copying & pasting.
So glad to see LoxyBot up and running again, keeping {{Opentask}} fresh all the time. It must have been a lot of work for you to get your helpful bot running smoothly on the wiki-toolserver. Here's a really big sandwich for you in appreciation for your hard work! Thank you. Enjoy! --PFHLai (talk) 04:22, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A concern

[edit]

I have reason to believe that a newly created account has been created by the same person who created a vandalism-only account. The vandalism-only was blocked, which was User:robert.lambton. The new account, which I have reason to believe was created by the same person using the same IP adress, is user:Ilovejoy. You are free to do whatever you feel appropriate in response to this situation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by WikiWizarrd123 (talkcontribs) 12:05, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, WikiWizarrd123. Right now, I don't see anything in Special:Contributions/Ilovejoy to warrant any action against this "new" user. If you suspect Ilovejoy (talk · contribs) is actually the blocked vandal Robert.lambton (talk · contribs), you may want to inform WereSpielChequers (talk · contribs), the admin who blocked this bad user last month, or report this to the Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard to get more admins involved. Please see also Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations. Hope this helps. --PFHLai (talk) 14:32, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Chester Cross

[edit]

Thanks for your redirect from Chester Cross to Chester High Cross but I'm afraid it's a mistake; the two are different, but of course closely related. I thought I had explained it in the lead to Chester High Cross; Chester High Cross is a structure, Chester Cross is a geographical area where main streets meet. Interestingly when Booth built Booth Mansion, he could not see the High Cross from the mansion because it was not there. It had been removed after it was damaged in the Civil War and was not rebuilt in Chester Cross until 1975. I think I had better make the redirect into a disambig page. Peter I. Vardy (talk) 08:23, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks PFHLai. My name is Cam. I have left comments here and not sure what "hook" means. What am I required to do here? Thanks for nominating articles. Kind Regards --Newm30 (talk) 05:29, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, Cam. Thank you for your quick response at T:TDYK. A hook is a one-liner with a question mark used in the DYK section on MainPage to get people to click and read your new articles. Usually, it's some interesting, weird, funny, shocking, ironic... but true and verifiable fact(s) in the DYK articles. The Kujin hook just got approved, so nothing is required to be done. (I thought the same reviewer would ask for more refs.) If you can come up with another hook, please go ahead and propose it there on T:TDYK. Please be encouraged to nominate your next wikicontributions for DYK. Happy editing. Cheers! -- Patrick (talk) 05:42, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding this edit:
We frequently link directly to the relevant section, particularly when an article is long. Dropping readers onto the page (with no clear indication of where to find information related to the blurb) is confusing and unhelpful.
The section in question is the basis of the item's inclusion, so if the section is in poor shape, the item probably should be removed.
Also note that neither that edit nor the one that followed was minor. —David Levy 20:45, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, David.... I am not sure what is confusing and why ITN wants to help readers find that one new paragraph -- that's not what ITN is for. ITN is about featuring articles that got updated, not featuring the updates. Hopefully, people will read the whole article! By directing the attention to a particular section, the sections above it may get ignored. And that's not good. "We frequently link directly..."? I'm fairly sure we (admins at ITN) used to frown on such piping. I don't do much at ITN these days. If you and other admins currently running ITN like things this way, go ahead. I won't revert. You're right in your edit summary that I wouldn't mind. I just don't think it's a good idea to pipe from MainPage to one particular section, rather than getting the reader to start at the top of the article.
The basis of the item's inclusion is actually the last paragraph of that section in the "Clmate of the Arctics" article. The problems I see are in the preceding paragraphs. Just formatting issues, not bad enough to yank anything off ITN.
The minor stuffs? They are minor to me.... and really too minor to talk about. I have two other msg to respond to (below), and I really should be in bed soon.... I hope you don't mind. Good night, David. Nice to hear from you again, anyway. Take care. --PFHLai (talk) 05:24, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
1. Indeed, it's best if the entire article is read. But that isn't what someone is likely to do if he/she arrives at the top of the page. At that point, the aforementioned confusion arises because the article doesn't appear to directly relate to the blurb. And rather than reading on (and eventually reaching the relevant text), he/she simply leaves the article.
Also note that a non-section-specific link already was included (albeit not displayed in bold), thereby encouraging users to read the full article. Additionally, it's easy for readers to scroll up after reading the relevant section.
2. This isn't a matter of what the admins editing ITN "like"; the practice reflects feedback received from readers.
3. Per Help:Minor edit, "a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute." In other words, an edit stemming from disagreement with how something was intentionally done is not minor.
4. It's nice to chat again. It's been a while. Good night (or good morning, if you're reading this tomorrow). —David Levy 06:20, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, David. Sorry about the belated reply. I've been off-line the last few days. I can no longer log in as often as I used to.
1. I am not sure if we can assume what the readers want, apart from accessing articles in an online encyclopedia. I'd just sent them to the top of a page, where a table of contents should be (along with the intro'). They can scroll or click and jump to the sections that interest them. News articles, focusing on what just happened, and encyclopedic articles, with an emphasis on the background stories that lead up to what just happened, are very different things. Readers who just want the news really should be at a news site such as Wikinews, rather than here, an online encyclopedia. Directly linking to the latest additions, at least to me, is like skipping much of the good parts of the encyclopedia.
2. I'm not aware of readers' feedback about this. I sincerely hope that you and other admins don't simply do what the crowd says, instead of screening out the bad ideas. If you don't like the idea, don't do it. (Unless, of course, the consequences of not doing whatever that is are worse.) If you think the piping is a good idea, go ahead. But to me, it's a bad pipe.
3. I'm glad that you understand why I marked them "minor". I didn't think the pipe removal would require review or lead to disputes. (If I did, I would've left a note on the talkpage.) I saw a bad pipe. I removed it without changing the text. So I marked those edits as minor edits. I didn't expect a disagreement with anyone.
I'm not sure if you still want to talk about this. The Arctic item is no longer on ITN. I thought I should give you a reply.
Anyway, have a nice weekend, David. Happy editing. --PFHLai (talk) 03:37, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Letchworth Corset Riot

Thanks, Rock. I saw those. What prompted me to look was the blanking of User talk:Jspearmint, removing previous warnings. Those deleted (bad) edits were made a long time ago. I wanted to AGF and I hope Jspearmint (talk · contribs) has reformed. I don't know. Maybe I am naive and pollyanna-ish. I was hoping that some Wikipedians from Letchworth could verify this piece of "history". Bonny Doon ER nomination

[edit]

Dear PFH, Thank you so much for the nom, I'm flattered. With that said, I'd like to get all footnotes to each paragraph finished, so would it be possible to remove the article from the DYK list until I can get that done? I'll alert you when that task is complete. Cheers, Marcia Wright (talk) 05:30, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, Marcia. What usually happens at T:TDYK is that nominations stay there till [1] the suggested hook is used for DYK, or [2] some admin or DYK clerk thinks there are unfixable problems (article getting too old, copyvio, edit wars...) and the nomination cannot be accepted. Missing footnotes is a fixable problem, but this should be done soon. New articles are supposed to be used for DYK within a week of their creation. Please leave a note there on T:TDYK when you're done with the referencing. Someone there will then review the nomination. I am usually not around during the work week. I hope this article of yours will get on MainPage before I come back next weekend. Happy editing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 06:06, 21 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BorgQueen (talk) 20:43, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just want to thank you for the nomination of this article. As you know it made it on the 25th. The funny thing is, that piece I would call a "rushjob" , not as extensive as it could have been. If you ever get the time and interest, may I refer you to Theodore Lukens ( bio of a conservationist) that is currently waiting for GA status, as an example of what a Wikipedia article should be.

Again, *bow* thank you very much. Best wishes on your Wikipedia work. Sincerely, Marcia Wright (talk) 03:32, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're very, very welcome, Marcia. You did a good job with the article, and your good work deserves the spotlight on MainPage. We should all thank you for the nice new article.
DYK is meant to feature new additions to the encyclopedia. No one expects perfection out of brand new articles that are merely a few days old. There are minimum standards, and your Bonny Doon article is more than good enough for DYK. Your efforts to make things as good as possible are very much appreciated. Please be encouraged to self-nominate your next good wikicontribution for DYK. All the best with the GA review. Happy editing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 04:44, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Oryzomys hypenemus

[edit]

I was slightly surprised by our assessment of the article on Oryzomys hypenemus as Stub-class. Could you please explain? Ucucha 14:04, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And thanks for nominating it to DYK. :-) Ucucha 14:08, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ooops... That was a careless mistake of mine. I did a copy-&-paste from another talkpage to get the template codes and I forgot to make the necessary changes. Thank you for pointing that out to me. --PFHLai (talk) 14:13, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Thanks for fixing it so quickly! Ucucha 14:15, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome, Ucucha. Embarrassing mistakes must be removed ASAP! :-) --PFHLai (talk) 14:20, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm coming over as very arrogant now, aint I? Should I immediately nominate it for FA, you think, or is it better to wait a little? ;-) Ucucha 14:22, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think you can go for a GA right away. The subject matter might not allow for an FA. Please consider asking Dr. Ray and his Harvard colleagues to publish more often on this animal. Then you'll have more materials to write about. Good luck on that. :-) --PFHLai (talk) 14:48, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the suggestion. I've got another article pending in GA right now, so I'd prefer to wait until that is over. This animal will definitely get published at one time or another, though probably not by Ray, who is retired. We'll have to wait. P.S. No need to copy this conversation to my talk page all the time--I'll see it when you respond here. Ucucha 15:09, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for HMS Owen Glendower (1808)

[edit]

Thanks for the nomination. The hook you wrote is pretty much what I would have written had I known how to do a nomination. I am working on adding refs even as we write. An even bigger hole is the absence of an infobox on the ship. I have requested another editor to provide one, should he have the time. Regards, Acad Ronin (talk) 18:54, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, Acad Ronin. Thank you for adding the refs. More information about the DYK nomination process can be found here. Hope this helps. You have been doing good work in Wikipedia. Please be encouraged to nominate your next wikicontribution for DYK. Happy editing. Take care. --PFHLai (talk) 19:00, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Am having trouble finding my source's source for the two items that really require sources, particularly the DYK one, so hold off on it for now. My source is a website by a serious researcher of the period, but one who unfortunately does not cite his sources. Will continue to try and find printed source. Regards, Acad Ronin (talk) 19:36, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you've already put in quite a few footnotes, and the ref to support the DYK hook is in. Thank you so much. If possible, please add a few more. DYK clerks often ask for at least a footnote in every single paragraph after the introduction. I'm usually not around during the work week, so I won't be able to do much for the time being. When you think you've added enough footnotes and refs to the article, you might want to mention this on T:TDYK#HMS Owen Glendower. Happy editing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 05:07, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Live Like We're Dying

[edit]

Hi there - you were right to move that back - i wondered what was going on there - but I think the transfer was an honest action by User:Orlady, who saw the tick and acted on it. I'm more concerned about the nominator, if you check the contribtions history. But I'll AGF until there's a definite issue. Thanks for all your work. Cheers. hamiltonstone (talk) 11:37, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the tip about the nominator's contribution history. Perhaps a checkuser is in order. --PFHLai (talk) 11:49, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thnk so? 8frÜitz has started editing on 4 October, a day after 23prootie was blocked. First edit was to T:TDYK, which is a bit unusual for a new editor. Even more interesting; all his edits to T:TDYK were to sections that 23prootie has been involved in in some way. I'm beginning to think a checkuser would be a good idea. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 13:49, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
23prootie has previously used different IPs, such as 122.53.101.148 and 194.213.52.82, to evade his/her block. It might be hard to check. --PFHLai (talk) 14:19, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but note that editing has stopped after 4th, which may be because of the blocks placed on those IPs. Editing has been resumed on the 9th, so he may have got a new connection. I'm not familiar with the technical stuff, but I think checkuser can catch something like that, and it's not only the IP adresses they check. That is assuming it is indeed a sock of course :) It's possible we have got hold of some innocent editor. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 14:28, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please feel free to try checkuser, but this edit by 8frÜitz is not "innocent", but sneaky, and it's an escalation of this and this by the anons. --PFHLai (talk) 14:43, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

 Confirmed 23prootie (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki) = 8frÜitz (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki). I have blocked the sock indefinitely, and issued a warning to 23prootie. J.delanoygabsadds 19:06, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, J.delanoy, for checking and for letting me know. I hope this naughty user won't mess things up at DYK again. Happy editing. Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 19:20, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, Hybernator. BTW, regarding Collectonian's question here, if you can confirm the hook materials with the book refs in the article (you can use "|quote=..." in the cite template, if you like), I think the DYK should be a "go". Cheers! --PFHLai (talk) 02:41, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
