More Oral Citations

[edit]

Hi Nick - I've added in a section at the bottom of the research page where you can add suggestions for collaboration. Could you perhaps pursue the idea you were thinking of there? We could engage ideas and talk further - thank you. aprabhala 19:09, 26 July 2011 (UTC) Aprabhala

Hello there; a few words about me and my idea. I've worked in disability/health care activism for years. In 2005, I took an oral history from the grandmother and caregiver of a man with severe cerebral palsy and mental retardation, intended for a book project that never happened documenting marginalized people with disabilities in the Southern U.S. (Alabama and surrounding region). The goal of my un-launched project, giving historically marginalized/oppressed/ignored people a voice in the public discussion, is identical to your goal in the oral citations project. I still have the mp3 of that oral history from Alabama; it covers many important issues, from public policy problems to medical system failures to discriminatory attitudes, and as one family's experiences in straight first-person perspective without editorializing or preaching—descriptive not prescriptive—it is invaluable. I don't know how exactly this content could be incorporated into Wikipedia (or WikiSource or WikiBooks?) and I wanted to brainstorm with you about that, about where and how oral histories could help the projects, and also about how people could help with giving people with disabilities a voice in the initial oral citation countries (India, South Africa). Please brainstorm with me.... —NickDupree (talk) 00:53, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Really happy to help Nick. Can we take this forward on email? aprabhala at gmail dot com Aprabhala aprabhala 20:32, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oral Citations

[edit]

Hallo Nick, and thanks for your question. The status with the project is this: we are thinking of oral citations as an experiment. We think that it can work as a system of citation, but it probably needs some discussion with people in the language community you want to make it work in. (We are interested in English as well: after a few more articles are written, using oral citations, in Hindi, Malayalam and Sepedi, we plan to translate them into English.) So the short answer to your question is: if you are interested in the idea of oral citations, we would love to have you engage with the subject - perhaps you could write a bit as to why, and how it works for you - and if you would also like to run an experiment with using an oral citation, that sounds like it would be a great way to bring the discussion to en:wiki. In any case, will you keep us updated with your plans? I would like to hear more as they develop. Take care, brother. aprabhala 05:12, 26 July 2011 (UTC) Aprabhala (talkcontribs) <!

Architecture of the Song Dynasty

[edit]

This translation in the article really doesn't make much sense (and may even be somewhat incorrect). What is included does come from the book, but there are fragments of information omitted as well:

Standard for city wall: For every 40 chi height, the width of the wall at the base will be increase by half of the height; the width of the top of the wall must be decreased by half the height. The width of the foundation must be the same as the width of the base of the wall. For every 7.5 chi length of wall, apply two permanent anchor posts and two crossbeams; reinforced with additional woods and straw bundles.[5]

I tried tracking down the original passage and translating it, but my Classical Chinese isn't good enough to understand it. Attempts to find a convincing translation to modern Chinese online were futile.

I think it'd be good if we can find someone with a good grasp of Classical Chinese to translate the passage (the page numbers are correct now), otherwise maybe it should just be removed, as the paragraph before provides a brief summary anyway.

I'll be away for a while, but if you think I can be of further assistance, tell me and I'll try to help when I am back. Thanks. wctaiwan (talk) 16:38, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay then......

Very impressive, great! NickDupree (talk) 21:31, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, the idea is to choose something big that has appeal for everybody. I chose Shanghai as an example first up, was musing on Beijing which looks at first glance to be closer to GA status (so really needs more of a spit'n' boot polish...plusses- easy GA, minusses - maybe not much to do rather than futzing around with inline references). Anyway, if you can think of a broad china-related article with big gaping content-holes, that'd be a good one too. Tossing up some ideas is good. I do have some experience at FAs, though most of mine are biology.... Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:38, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll drop Beijing at the GOCE requests page. That'll get it the polish it needs. Sven Manguard Wha? 06:20, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sven do you reckon it's otherwise GA worthy? Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:17, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly wouldn't know. I work in the File, Book, and Portal namespaces primarily. It reads well, it covers what I'd think it needs to cover, but it could be riddled with MoS errors or be lacking in some other mainspace specific way and I'd never know. If you think it'll make grade, I'll trust you. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:48, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

But back to teh collab - it is interesting to speculate why it didn't take off first time round. Topics chosen might have been pretty dry (?) Too early really in 2004 for this sort of thing...?Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:22, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Exposure might be low. I'll link it to Wikipedia:WikiProject East Asia, also sadly low exposure, and see if we can get more traffic. Also, you should drop a line at the Signpost. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:48, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Moribund WikiProjects

[edit]

This is just a personal opinion, from someone who has been involved, unfortunately, in the creation of a lot of WikiProjects, particularly geographical ones. So far as I have personally seen, two of the major problems a lot of editors will have are (1) trying to determine whether topics are notable enough for articles, and (2) trying to find sources for articles.

In both cases, I personally think some of the most helpful and useful things that could be done would be (1) creating a fairly good bibliography article, listing relevant sources for related content, specifically including any relevant encyclopedic sources, and (2) maybe, one or more lists of articles which are fairly clearly sufficiently notable as per WP:N to exist. Particularly in some smaller or less well known countries, like Suriname, Mongolia, Mali, and the like, there often aren't that many articles even in some of the major databanks which deal with the topics in a clear way. So, if one were only using a public domain source, like the US Country Guides, for instance, one would be able to look at the list of articles and maybe be able to create stubs about individual settlements, for instance, which, once created, could be added to in the various tourist guides, histories, and whatever. I haven't had as much time to create all the bibliography articles as I would like, but I have e-mailed myself virtually every review I could find on some few databanks I checked. I think maybe listing the various entries in relevant encyclopediac sources in a list of potential articles would be of use to many projects, as would a bibliography article listing the various nonfiction sources on the subject which have received such reviews. If you were to want me to forward any such material, please drop me a note indicating which subjects you want the reviews for, and your e-mail address, and I can forward to you what I have. IRC messages

[edit]

Hi there. While I was away from the computer that had IRC running you apparently sent me a private message. Because I don't know how to set up the logging properly, and because the client killed itself off when that computer went into hibernation, deleting the PM, all I can tell is that a new tab was opened up and you were the other party. I hope I didn't miss anything important (if it has to do with wctaiwan editing the Song Dynasty article, I saw it on my watchlist by haven't checked it over). I should be around on the IRC late tomorrow (10 PM-ish EST), or you could send me an email or leave me a talk page message (Although I wouldn't see either of those until 10 PM-ish either).

Sorry about all this. Sven Manguard Wha? 06:46, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

China: Its History and Culture

[edit]

I have found the book, but its coverage of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms Period is disappointing--it is glossed over in one paragraph, which I quote below:

The period following the collapse of Tang comprised the Five Dynasties in the north and the Ten Kingdoms in the south. No attempt need be made here to distinguish the brief duration and location of these regimes. In spite of the divisions between dynasties, cultural continuity was maintained. They produced overall a rise in bureaucratic centralization and a decline in provincial power that opened the way for the concentration of power at the center in the succeeding Song dynasty. (p.100)

The rest of the chapter, including parts on the art and technology of the period and Neo-Confucianism, is almost entirely focused on the Song Dynasty.

I might try to find more books on the period, but eh. wctaiwan (talk) 06:10, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I found a book called Imperial China: 900–1800, which has some 20 pages on the period. I'm probably not going to do anything with it today, but I think it may be helpful in reworking the article. wctaiwan (talk) 06:59, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please do! Need the information desperately NickDupree (talk) 17:02, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If I were on campus at my University, which actually owns a copy, I would have access to the book. However they don't ship books, I'm out of state, my local library system dosen't seem to have a copy, and it would take two weeks minimum to get it through inter-library loan. If you want to scan in those pages and email then to me, I can help with that source. If not, I'd only have access to online publications, because my local library system isn't going to have anything. I'm going to go on a JSTOR raid now. Sorry I have taken so long to respond, but I haven't have much time to lately. My main historical interests include the classical world, particularly the Mongolian empire. I am also interested in the medieval era and the cultures within it. Thankyou, and I hope the project is revitalised as well (history, as you well know, is obviously rather important). Bye! Looks like you haven't been around lately. Hope everything is alright. Just wanted to let you know that AotSD got its GAN and is on hold. Comments are at Talk:Architecture of the Song Dynasty. I've picked at a few, and I hope to get everything back up to tip top shape in a few days. In the mean time, if you get this message, please stop in and take a look. P.S. I have your pictures.

AotSD got it's GA certification sometime in the last hour or so. Thank you for all the help. The next step, by the way, is linked in the section title. Today's articles for improvement/Nominated articles: Encyclopedic dictionary

[edit]

Greetings! I noticed that you are active on several article nomaninations at the TAFI page, and I was just wondering if you were interested to support the nomination of an article encyclopedic dictionary.

Wikipedia is perhaps the most revolutionizing act in the history of dictionaries and encyclopedias. However, there's been surprisingly little written about the other forms of encyclopedia, such as encyclopedic dictionaries. I'm not sure if there are any encyclopedic dictionaries anymore being published, but a good article on those sure would help better to position our dear Wikipedia in the field of encyclopedic history!

Thanks a lot and keep up the good work! :) Jayaguru-Shishya (talk) 16:02, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
