May 2020[edit]

There have been two problems with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing. Additionally, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for your contributions to Wikipedia, you must disclose who is paying you to edit.

If you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block. To do so, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason for thinking that the block was an error, and publish the page. Request reason:

This is a personal account. It does not represent a business or organization. In making it, I consulted Wikipedia's TOU for cultural professionals. I also created a user page describing my affiliation and editing intentions even though I am not a paid editor, and therefore not required to make that disclosure. I only seek to cite or link to relevant archival resources. In all likelihood, I will not be making changes to the text body of any article. I am happy to change my username to ensure the account aligns with Wikipedia policy. I understand why that might have been the primary reason the account was blocked.

Accept reason:

Is your position a volunteer position? Even volunteers are considered to be "paid editors", as they are compensated with the experience of their volunteer work. Does editing Wikipedia fall within your assigned duties as curator? WP:PAID states: "Interns, on-loan staff, and unpaid workers, including volunteers, are deemed to be employees. If they are directed or expected to edit Wikipedia as part of their tasks, they must make a paid-contribution disclosure." 331dot (talk) 23:15, 14 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Where is the user [age? That could be helpful. Hello, this looks like a G.L.A.M. opportunity.

"The GLAM–Wiki initiative ("galleries, libraries, archives, and museums" with Wikipedia; also including botanic and zoological gardens) helps cultural institutions share their resources with the world through collaborative projects with experienced Wikipedia editors.".  --Deep fried okra User talk:Deepfriedokra 00:22, 15 May 2020 (UTC) My position is not volunteer, but I receive no instruction or compensation for particular contributions. I only hoped to add the occasional citation referencing relevant content found at my or any other GLAM institution. Not edit the article about the organization where I am employed. As such, I did not believe I fell under the requirement to disclose my affiliation, but did anyway on my user page, just in case. All of which seemed to fall under the Wikipedia guidelines for cultural professionals I found here. If I am considered a paid editor, my understanding is that I can still make edits. I just need to disclose that information on my user page.Icky512 (talk) 01:09, 15 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Just FYI: I generally use a very simple formula in deciding which block options to use. In your case you used a name that referenced an organization, and you added links to that organiztion to articles. To me that's an easy case for the "hard" block, (as opposed to what we call a "soft block" which explicitly allows you to just pick a new name and go back to editing without having to appeal) but I must confess I did miss the tail end of the information you posted on that user page. @Deepfriedokra: I deleted the user page, but here's what it said: TAMI Curator serves as the curator for the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI), a nonprofit film archive working to discover, preserve, provide access to, and educate the community about Texas’ film heritage. They seek to enrich Wikipedia articles by citing relevant resources from TAMI as well as other GLAM institutions. They receive no compensation for a particular contribution. If you feel like you have reached an understanding here and want to unblock that's fine with me. Beeblebrox (talk) 01:24, 15 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I feel comfortable unblocking as Icky512 knows more about WP:GLAM than I. (Totally missed the user page. Tired.) For the purpose of transparency and collaborative effort, I will restore the user page as well. Sorry for the inconvenience. --Deep fried okra User talk:Deepfriedokra 02:53, 15 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thanks, all! I appreciate you guys looking out for spam. Let me know if I should make any further changes to my user page. I'm pretty new to this side of things.Icky512 (talk) 02:57, 15 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
