The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras is the upcoming fortieth season of the MTVreality competition seriesThe Challenge, featuring alumni from The Real World, Road Rules, The Challenge, Are You the One? (U.S.), Big Brother (U.S.), Survivor (U.S.), Love Island (U.S. and UK), Survival of the Fittest, and Exatlón Estados Unidos competing for a share at a $1 million prize.[1] A launch special, titled "Countdown Begins" is expected to air on August 7, 2024, followed by the season premiere scheduled for August 14, 2024.[2] With the change in digital availability from Paramount Global, those who want to watch the show on demand will no longer be available to do so on MTV.com, but rather solely through TV Everywhere login through cable, satellite and Internet TV providers the following day along with transactional video on demand. Livestreams of the linear channel are no longer offered by Paramount Global on the MTV website either.
4 teams of 10 competed in this season of The Challenge. The teams were formed based on what mainline season of The Challenge a contestant debuted on: those who debuted during the first ten seasons (Road Rules: All Stars through The Inferno II) were placed in Era I; those who debuted between the eleventh and twentieth seasons (The Gauntlet 2 through Cutthroat) made up Era II; those who debuted between the twenty-first and thirtieth seasons (Rivals through XXX: Dirty 30) made up Era III; and those who debuted between the thirty-first and thirty-ninth seasons (Vendettas through Battle for a New Champion) made up Era IV.
