Non-carbon life

[edit]

The pathogen in this film reminds me of the crystal/clay/silicate theory developed by Cairns-Smith. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Cairns-Smith --Mike Spenard 01:55, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Animal scenes

[edit]

Since some viewers find the (simulated) lab animal death scenes in the movie to be upsetting, can we find an online source to cite about how those scenes were staged? Supposedly they were done with sodium pentothal to knock the animals out. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.58.35.159 (talk) 03:19, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The scenes of the animals convulsing in their death throes were done by flooding their immediate vicinities with carbon dioxide gas, displacing the normal air and inducing unconsciousness. There was always nearby a veterinarian to promptly revive the critter with bottled oxygen. I have it from a reliable source, a close relative who is a pharmaceutical scientist, that flushing with carbon dioxide has been a common laboratory method of sedating research animals for brief spells of time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.223.130.60 (talk) 15:35, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Summary

[edit]

This aricle definitley needs a summary. Its plot it significantly different from either the novel or miniseries that you cannot use thier summaries and get an accuracte picture of the plot. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.59.163.254 (talk) 00:38, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Critical / box ofice reception

[edit]

Can we have something about this ? -- Beardo (talk) 06:32, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. I can't believe any of the reviews were actually good. This movie was made for Mystery Science Theater 3000]Spinach Monster (talk) 05:21, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I find it hilarious that this was rated G. I guess back in the day people weren't as afraid of titties & blood. Popecrunch (talk) 23:39, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: trivia

[edit]

It should be noted that the countdown to the nuclear destruction of the site, and Stone and Hall's efforts to prevent it, play out in real time. This can be verified by checking one's wristwatch while watching the film. WHPratt (talk) 20:22, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Copy editing

[edit]

I have re-written the "Other media" section, which was identified as deserving some attention in the list of articles so tagged. I have removed that tag. I have left in the "citation needed" tags even though I'm not sure that these are appropriate, given that the TV episodes mentioned are themselves the source for the details.

Comments welcome

No computer animations

[edit]

The source given for the claim that the animation of the lab would be a 3D computer animation only says that it could "possibly" be so. I have the DVD here with a making-of documentary where Trumbull himself says very clearly that they didn't use a computer for that animation, but slit-scan photography. There was a 3D plastic model of the lab made, and that model was rotated in the dark via stop-motion in front of the slitscan camera, and that's how that animation was created. The *ACTUAL* and only computer effect in the film is that the camera movements of the microscope when trying to identify the "organism" were computer-controlled. The visual effects on the "organism" were produced by means of a simple analogue video effects generator. --2003:71:4E3F:3324:FD07:A567:7875:4411 (talk) 05:20, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What kind of "fictional series"? TV, radio, books, comics? Is there on on-line source that describes this? Since we don;t seem to have an article on it, it seems unlikelyt that it will be added to this article.Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:28, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
