Diplomacy

[edit]

Surely the phrase "gunboat diplomacy" originated with the fleet of Matthew Perry? Has anyone researched this? Slac speak up! 10:09, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was well established technique before then. Not sure if the term came before or after Perry. But I am very suprised that Matthew C. Perry isn't mentioned at all in this article.--ZayZayEM 04:04, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think its important that if anyone is going to question where the gunboat diplomacy originated, and if it was Perry who used it with Japan-you should read Perrys page to gain insight that it was not Perry who used this type of diplomacy tp enter Japan-and you would have to look beyond that era to see when and how and who first utilized this 'diplomacy'. Could be it wasnt originanted with an American at all??--BrattySoul

...what about the most recent events with Iran...don't feel like signing this or what not...just someone who comes across this may want to think about adding a 21st century section.

Modern contexts

[edit]

definately the mathew perry thing with Japan should have its own page in wiki Anyone else think the paragraph on 'Modern contexts' lacks neutrality in its tone? Chwyatt 09:00, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to reword anything I've written to make it sound less biased. sf46 13:46, 25 October 2007 (CST)

Not sure if it's bias, but "The term "gunboat diplomacy" has been superseded in many circles by the more euphemistic "power projection"." is an odd sentence; "Gunboat diplomacy" traditionally is the threat of force, "powere projection" means to actually use force. The example given of CLINTON'S use of the militry during the Yugo Civil Wars shows both terms, diplomacy by the E-3's and projections from Tomahawks. I submit that should be clarified, but I don't really care much. 152.121.19.13 (talk) 03:47, 17 April 2010 (UTC) A REDDSON[reply]

I hardly think this fits in with the theme of the article at all. Moreover, it looks like original research. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 27.33.100.29 (talk) 09:35, 27 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
