The former page's history now serves to provide attribution for that content in the latter page, and it must not be deleted as long as the latter page exists.

Propose merging Spanish East Indies into Captaincy General of the Philippines

Short explanation: After an investigation I have made, those terms mentioned above are essentially the same thing. But the thing is that in terms of administration and government of Spanish colonies, the term of Captaincy General of the Philippines is more widely used.

Long explanation: I suggest to move this, because I found out that those things include the same territories, adding separate articles would be misleading and confusing when they literally are the same thing (their territories on maps are the same), so merge them would be a solution. In the articles about list of colonies there images that says Captaincy General of the Philippines and that included other islands in the Pacific which formed the Spanish East Indies, implying that both terms are the same but the term that I'm mentioning (Captaincy General) is the most widely used, and also in list of Spanish colonies Captaincy General is the one that is seen, and the name of the Governors are named Governor-General of the Philippines, implying the same as well.

  The political title is Governor of the Philippines, and even the Captaincy General of the Philippines controlled areas in the Pacific despite the title of being the Philippines, so the term of Captaincy General would be more suitable and that's why I'm proposing that. • Comment I would want to analyze first how the Spanish Wikipedia treats the two articles, as over there the articles cover two distinct topics. This article is specific to the political entity that is the Captaincy General of the Philippines, talking about the territory's organization and government and economy. This is distinct from the Spanish East Indies article (redirects to "Spanish Empire in Asia and Oceania") which talks about the Spanish Empire's attempts at colonizing the relevant territories, an in-depth history of how the territories concerned came under Spanish rule, and what came afterward. That may be useful in determining if there is enough separation between the two articles to warrant them being separated or if they should be merged, because the fact that there are two articles is not limited to the English Wikipedia. --Sky Harbor ^(talk) 22:08, 29 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
• Agree the pages are redundant. Sky Harbor raises a good point that there could be an "in-depth history" article, although neither ours nor the es.wiki articles are structured well for that. That raises a separate question, which is how a history article would interact with History of the Philippines (1565–1898). That page is currently structured from a modern anachronistic POV looking back, and would be highly redundant with a history article which covered the Spanish East Indies as a whole given much of that was what is now the Philippines. Merging content there would mean shifting that framing. Alternatively, history content could be kept on Captaincy General of the Philippines, but then its Histoy section "Main article" wouldn't cover the whole history. A third option is to create a second anachronistic article, like Portuguese Empire in the Indonesian Archipelago, but this solution has never felt too useful to a reader looking for a comprehensive narrative. This article shoul;d givee the date and the circumstances of the founding of the Captaincy General of the Philippines. I did not see thsast info or a supporting cite when I looked for it after seeing yjiia edit to a erelated article. Also, the infobox should probably show extablishment and aboloshment dates.
