origins of name

[edit]

I corrected the origins of the name of Capitola, based upon information on the official site of the City of Capitola. The claim (which I removed) that it was once envisioned as state capitol can only be regarded as fanciful. Perhaps it is something the author heard told, family folklore, or whatever. Sorry. Capitola started as a resort ("Camp Capitola") and was never expected to be anything other than that. Andrew

history

[edit]

I added some historical material to the period before the establishment of Camp Capitola. I also gave credit to Frederick Hihn for the establishment and naming of Camp Capitola. In the non-whaling material, I have relied on Donald Clark's book, Santa Cruz County Place Names, a very in-depth and well researched study. He discusses various versions of how the name came about, including the version about it coming from Southworth's book. Bartam (talk) 06:24, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
