[edit]

The entry on the Glasgow section of the A74 is incorrect. It does not end at the Tollcross terminus of the M74 but at the B7071/A721 junction in Uddingston. The 'small remnant' remark is also relative. The A74 from the City Centre out to Uddingston is almost 10 miles long.--Stevouk 14:46, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Importance

[edit]

The northern end of the A74 is a major route into Glasgow. According to the Highways Agency, the southern end carries three quarters of all Anglo-Scottish traffic. That's 44,000 vehicles a day, slightly more than the first section of the high-importance A1 I found a figure for (Bedford). Is "low-importance" sufficient for the A74? Certes (talk) 18:34, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Point withdrawn: the busy border section is about to disappear (replaced by M6) and the Glasgow end seems likely to become unimportant (and perhaps be renumbered) in a few years now the M74 completion has begun. Certes (talk) 00:38, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Final Section (Glasgow)

[edit]

As the M74 extension is now complete, can anyone find a source which actually confirms that this road no longer exists? FM talk to me | show contributions ]  14:26, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • The A74 still appears as a local road on contemporary Ordnance Survey coverage. I suspect nobody can be bothered to change all the existing road signs over. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:59, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Okay, so better amend the lead to show that it still exists (even if its not much of it). Do we know if this remaining section has been detrunked however? FM talk to me | show contributions ]  15:25, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • How about the lead sentence then starts something like The A74 is a road in Glasgow, Scotland, formerly part of a major trunk road which linked the city to Carlisle in the North West of England.? I know that the fact that it still exists is addressed at the end of the lead but I just feel that stating The A74 was a major trunk road in the lead sentence gives off the implication that the road no longer exists. The way I see it is like this - all of the road that reliable sources talk about no longer exists, and no reliable sources (aside from an OS map, which just shows it exists, not that it's notable) talk about the small bit that does exist. It was a major road, and is no longer, but the lead does say at the end that a small, non-notable bit still exists. I'll have a think about what else I can put in and get back to you!
How about "The A74 is a road in Glasgow, Scotland. It was originally a major trunk road in the United Kingdom" etc? Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:54, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, that above sentence sounds fine to me. FM talk to me | show contributions ]  16:05, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the detrunking of the A74 inside Glasgow, trunk roads didn't run inside city council boundaries, so it wouldn't have been trunked in the first place. The Cumberland Gap was certainly detrunked (source). Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 15:51, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
