German car manufacturer Audi is contracted to compete as a Formula One team and power unit manufacturer beginning with the 2026 season. Audi F1 Team will be formed through the acquisition of the Sauber Group, with engines developed by Audi Formula Racing GmbH.[6]
Background[edit]
Audi announced in August 2022 that it would enter the championship as an engine manufacturer in 2026.[7][8] In October, Audi confirmed its partnership with Sauber Motorsport for the year 2026, acquiring a stake in the company for the German brand to enter the competition by renaming the team and supplying engines.[9][10] Neel Jani works as the team's simulator driver.[11][12]
In 2025, Nico Hülkenberg will join Sauber's team, Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber, on a multi-year contract which will see him race for Audi in 2026.[13][14]
On 15 July 2024, it was announced that British-based oil and energy company BP will join the Audi team as fuel partner and supplier while Castrol would be the lubricant partner and supplier, with both brands also providing sponsorship.[15] Previously Castrol sponsored Hinwil-based Formula One team in 1994 to early 1995 under Sauber branding.
