    Copyright/attribution clarification

Hi, a very nice user rewrote Workshops Rail Museum back in February because the article was completely unsourced. It’s currently sitting in their sandbox at User:Blammy1/sandbox, however they’re now inactive and attempts to contact them through pinging and email to ask them if they could add the content into the article haven’t worked.

So, I was just asking, are there any copyright/attribution issues if I, as another editor, were to copy the info over into the article from their sandbox? Or could I write something in the edit summary like: “Copied content from User:Blammy1/sandbox”? Thanks, and please ping me. Fork99 (talk) 01:14, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Fork99: Yes, you can do that. See WP:CWW. The suggested edit summary is "Copied content from User:Blammy1/sandbox; see that page's history for attribution" RudolfRed (talk) 02:28, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Fork99: If you intend to completely replace the old article with the contents of User:Blammy1/sandbox, then request a page move instead. This will preserve the edit history.(I see that you have already handled this in a better way). As to permission: a user's sandbox has the same copyright status as anything else in Wikipedia. We Customarily defer to that user but that's just a convention, not a matter of copyright law. You still must follow the "copying within Wikipedia" rules. -Arch dude (talk) 15:26, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Why is the title of this article written without italics, while the title in the infobox is written in italics? JackkBrown (talk) 13:31, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: because the editor chose to set the "italic title" parameter to "no". See Template:Infobox book. -Arch dude (talk) 16:33, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: how do I remove the italics from the title in the infobox? JackkBrown (talk) 19:41, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: I have no idea. Try asking at Template talk:Infobox book. Reading the source for Template:Infobox book, it's possible that you can add "| titlestyle = font-size:125%; padding-bottom:0.2em" to the template invocation, but there does not appear to be any documentation. -Arch dude (talk) 22:52, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is no such parameter. The infobox has no option to omit italics but you can use {{noitalic}} to override the italics with | name = {{noitalic|Quality of Nationality Index}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:00, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: @PrimeHunter: thanks a lot; I solved this by using two templates, one for the page title and one for the title in the infobox. JackkBrown (talk) 01:44, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Endorsing prod

Can I added a second endorsement to a prod or is it just the one endorsement? TipsyElephant (talk) 16:11, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If someone already seconded a prod it's probably unnecessary to add another one. If an AfD is created due to an objection, you can obviously comment on that. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 16:33, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Locked out of my account

Hello, I got locked out of my Wikipedia account a long time ago and was never able to get back in because I didn‘t have an email associated with it. The user name is Anston06. I would like to be able to get back into it so I don’t have to make edits as a guest anymore 97.125.186.81 (talk) 18:27, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP from Iowa, you were never "locked out of" your account. User:Anston06 was temporarily blocked for 31 hours on 10 April 2021. You should be able to use that account. provided you know the password. If you do not know the password and did not have an e-mail associated with your account, I am afraid there is nothing we can do. As that account only has 23 edits remaining out of the 31 you made, the the simplest thing is simply to create a new account. Best wishes - Arjayay (talk) 18:38, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you create a new account, you should identify it as a successor to your old account("Hello, I am User5678, I was previously User1234 but lost access"). 331dot (talk) 19:25, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can you make recommendations about a page without a specific edit?

I am reading an article that creates more confusion that clarity. I also think I know why. But I'm not knowledgeable enough to suggest a change. What do you do in that case?

The example is with this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythia

The first paragraph reads as though Pythia was a real person. Though it doesn't provide a historical date, which is strange for an article about a person. As you continue to read, the third paragraph starts with "The Pythia was established at the latest in the 8th century BC..." So maybe this isn't a real person, but a title? "Pythia" and "the Pythia" seem to cause a lot of trouble here.

Again, I can't suggest a specific edit because I honestly have no idea which is correct. I just know that it is confusing as it currently is. Brittkim (talk) 19:45, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Brittkim: If you have suggestions for an article, you can start a discussion on the talk page, in this case Talk:Pythia. You don't have to propose a specific edit. RudolfRed (talk) 19:52, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Brittkim I think the article is written like that because there were actually a series of people who were the high priestess, so it is more the name of a role than the name of an individual. Wikipedia article titles tend not to use "The" (see WP:THE). The Pythia is better known (to me) as the Oracle at Delphi (i.e. the individual who provided the prophesies). Nevertheless, if you can suggest how to make the article better, please do so. Mike Turnbull (talk) 20:11, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I attempted to make a suggestion, but it mysteriously was filed under the "socrates" header. I don't seem to be able to edit or delete. This is quite the learning experience. Thanks! Brittkim (talk) 21:17, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Brittkim, possibly you forgot to put something in the Subject line when adding a new topic, so it was simply appended to the previous topic. Another editor has fixed it for you. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:30, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Brittkim: "Pythia was the name of the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi" seems to me reasonable and correct. Yes, these high priestesses were real people. It's like saying "Dauphin was the name of the eldest son of the reigning king of France". Maproom (talk) 22:17, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Maproom and Brittkim: But in most publications, etc, when refering to the word itself, the word is in italics, so "Pythia was the name of the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi", or "Dauphin was the name of the eldest son of the reigning king of France". But this will not work well here because we use bold for the first occurrence of the article title. Therefore, I suggest "Pythia was the title of the high priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi". -Arch dude (talk) 23:01, 11 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Iginio Massari

It's very strange that en.wiki doesn't have a page dedicated to the best Italian pastry chef, Iginio Massari. JackkBrown (talk) 01:41, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    (1) Many things in Wikipedia are very strange. (2) If Massari is notable, you can create a draft about him. 126.248.156.208 (talk) 06:26, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is an article about Massari on Italian Wikipedia (Iginio Massari [it]), and also a fair amount of information on Wikidata (d:Q21208744). As a Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, I would think the notability threshold shouldn't be an issue. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 12:23, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: The article does not exist because you have not yet added it. No other editor has any more or less obligation to create this article than you do. -Arch dude (talk) 16:02, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Admin capabilities

Just curious, but can an admin block their own account? And once they are blocked, can they unblock themself? (Or are they desysopped automatically when they are blocked?) Also, can an admin de-admin themself?  かなあ?  (talk) 17:34, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Admins can block themselves but cannot unblock themselves, that was a change made to the software a few years back. The admin userright can only be set by bureaucrats - it isn't automatically removed when an admin is blocked (regardless of who sets the block) and admins cannot grant it to themselves or to anyone. You can read more at Wikipedia:Administrators and Wikipedia:Bureaucrats. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 17:44, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your prompt reply (and for satisfying my curiosity!)  かなあ?  (talk) 17:46, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Admins can unblock themselves if they blocked themselves. The two main sources of this being: i) testing ii) Bad aim. Nosebagbear (talk) 21:27, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to view full-sized versions of images with overlays?

I was recently looking at the Andronovo culture article. In its Ethnolinguistic affiliation with Indo-Iranians section, there are two thumbnail images, both being maps of (mostly) Asia. The second one (which is labeled there as "Andronovo culture and main contemporary cultures c. 2000 BC") has some text on it that I wanted to get a better look at, as it's on the edge of readability for me in the thumbnail. So, I clicked on the thumbnail to bring up the full version. Unfortunately, this brought me to the the underlying blank map of Asia, without the text I'm interested in.

I've occasionally run into this same problem in the past, but due to my extreme laziness, I always defaulted to "Ehhhhhhhhhh... I'll figure it out later." But this time, to my own great surprise, I actually tried to figure it out! Looking at the wikitext, I saw that it was not linking (directly) to any image, but instead was using a template, Template:Continental_Asia_in_2000_BCE. The page for that template also shows the map with text as a thumbnail, and that thumbnail also links to the underlying textless map.

I guess I could probably see what I'm interested in by doing something like making a sandbox page that uses the template without making it into a thumbnail, but... is there a quicker, more direct way? Optimally, I would want this whole "This thumbnail is not an image, but an image with external text laid on top of it" thing to be largely irrelevant from the user's point of view (as opposed to from the editor's point of view) - i.e. when I click on what seems to me to be an image, the result would be showing me the same thing that the thumbnail shows me, but bigger.

I should note here that I understand that that's not exactly the same as what happens with a "real" image; clicking on that brings you to the image's page, not the image itself, and there is no "image's page" for these things. But at least to me, that difference is a minor detail that's not really significant for my purposes here.

    Thanks in advance. - Rwv37 (talk) 19:41, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that the labels are not part of the image itself. They superposed over it using static coordinates and for a fixed image size. If you scale the image, they will be in wrong places. Ruslik_Zero 20:33, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Ruslik0, my very brief scan of the involved code leads me to suspect (quite possibly wrongly) that that's just for convenience of the editor, and is automatically translated into latitude and longitude. But even if not, I'm not sure why something along those lines couldn't be done - that is, automatically taking the desired scaling factor (implied by default image pixel size, desired pixel size, and marked pixel location) into account in order to figure out where to put the mark. And in any case, the current situation is... not very user-friendly, so if this behavior cannot be overcome within the current system for reasons I don't understand, maybe the current system is significantly suboptimal by design? -Rwv37 (talk) 21:28, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Rwv37 It isn't entirely satisfactory but you can use your browser's scaling options to enlarge the image on the page. In Edge/Chrome and most standard browsers the key combination Ctrl+ will enlarge the webpage. At 150% I find the text in the image quite legible: and you could then copy/snip the image out at that size. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:11, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Saved List" on the cellphone where to find it on Desktop

I have have an user in Wikipedia for years.

Usually reading from the cellphone, I have a long saved list or bookmark or reading list on the cellphone.

How do I have access to my "Saved List" on the cellphone where to find it on Desktop?

Where is the Bottom of Saving on the computer? Priscilla Pino (talk) 21:47, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Priscilla Pino: The reading list in the Wikipedia app can only be accessed there. There is a reading list browser extension which can add pages to the list but not use the list. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:37, 12 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How do i return to my draft page ...

I have set up a draft page and it said when I finish working on the page press "Publish" and it will save the page so that I can come back to it at a later date which I am doing today but I cannot find how to get back to the page ... it says that this page has been deleted ... but the other day it said this but the page was not deleted somehow I managed to get into it ... what am I doing wrong? and where can I go to find out how to reenter a page after I close it down. Thank you. Ngeralite (talk) 00:18, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What was the page called? If you mean Draft:Briann kearney is is still there. Meters (talk) 00:21, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you actually created it in article space (not draft space) and it was moved to daft by user:‎Liz , but you have edited it since then. And shouldn't this be at draft:Briann Kearney? Meters (talk) 00:26, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to fix a talk page archive mess?

Talk:Melbourne Airport seems to have been manually archived by someone in 2008/09. However, I wanted to set up auto-archiving, and so I did using Lowercase sigmabot III, but realised that it would archive the most recent posts into Archive 1, when there already was an Archive 2 that was previously manually created. So I disabled the bot for now.

I've now moved the contents of Archive 2 into Archive 1, and it now sits at around 50k bytes, when the bot's default max is 125k bytes per archive. I've also made sure that the posts are in chronological order. Is it now safe to reinstate the auto-archiving template? Is there something we can do about the now empty Archive 2?

    Thanks and please ping me. Fork99 (talk) 05:38, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Linking infobox to Wikidata

Hello, I just created Naum Tyufekchiev, and I was trying to link the infobox with Wikidata, but I couldn't find how. If you can tell me how to do it, I would be really grateful.

Thank you in advance AgisdeSparte (talk) 09:19, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

AgisdeSparte, I looked at Template:Infobox person/Wikidata and put {{Infobox person/Wikidata | fetchwikidata=ALL}}, which picks up sourced information from Wikidata. You may want to add some more sources to the Wikidata item. TSventon (talk) 09:57, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Oh, ok, I just didn't put the "fetchwikidata=ALL", thanks anyways ! AgisdeSparte (talk) 10:14, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
AgisdeSparte, my general advice would be, if a template isn't working, search online for the template name and then check the instructions. TSventon (talk) 10:35, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

stats on my activity on Wikipedia

I was surprised to see that I am the largest contributor (22.5%, 23.8% and 16.8% by the various methods in "revision history statistics" under "page information") to an article about a town that I have never visited and for which I have a fairly narrow band of interest. Is there anything that would show across all of Wikipedia those articles in which I am a major contributor? I was just wondering if there are any other surprises on my input. ThoughtIdRetired (talk) 11:09, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've had a similar reaction at times, but I don't know any "show me articles where I am at least 30% by authorship" tools. [1] just tells me which pages I've edited a lot. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:38, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@ThoughtIdRetired You'll find your own version of that link if you navigate to your contributions page, when it is the "Edit Count" link among the special links at the bottom, any of which you might find useful. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:38, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Fixing an archiving mistake

Hi. Over the last few months I added ClueBot III headers to a few Talk pages. Today I realized that my copy and paste was setting the archiveprefix to the value correct only for the Talk Matter Wave page. I've tried to correct the pages. But I guess some archiving might have gone into the wrong bin.

Any suggestions on how to repair or even check what happened?

I noticed that @Sawol seems to be fixing some of this.

    copyri

You have a photo from kremlin.ru that is listed as creative commons 4.0. But that photo is also credited to TASS. This is very confusing, as kremlin.ru tells a different story:

"The present rules for using materials from this website do not apply to RIA Novosti photographs that MIA Russia Today is the copyright holder of, or to photographs the TASS News Agency is the copyright holder of, when such photographs are posted on the www.kremlin.ru website with an indication of the agency and author." Please explain this to me. 2601:5C5:8303:8AD0:88B3:B5B0:EFA5:C4D1 (talk) 17:11, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It could be a mistake. It would be much easier to answer if you could give a link to Wikipedia's version of the image. Maproom (talk) 17:24, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Blue Highlighted Words In Articles

Hello. I am wondering how I might fix an issue I have when reading Wikipedia. It used to be that if I put my cursor on a blue highlighted word, it would give a brief rundown of that work, phrase, person, etc. But now, if I do so, all it does is mimic the word highlighted and do nothing else. Is there something that I can do to fix this so that it goes back to the original way of description? Thank-you for your time and advice. It is appreciated. Have a great day! 2601:500:8882:73D0:E91C:9483:87BE:7835 (talk) 23:32, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP user. There are two different tools that give some sort of preview of a linked page: one is called page previews, and I think is enabled by default, and a cleverer one called Navigation popups, which a logged-in user can enable in their user preferences. I don't quite recognise what you're describing, but I suspect that if you chose to create an account you could enable navigation popups and find them helpful. ColinFine (talk) 10:04, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
IP editor: I think that readers who are not logged in get an option to see page previews (or not). Try hovering over a blue-link where you would expect a preview. You may not currently see one but I believe you should see a "settings" cog in the corner of the preview box. Click on that and you should be able to activate the full previews: which I assume are related to how cookies are set in your browser. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:27, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If you have disabled previews then there should be a link saying "Edit preview settings" at the bottom right of the window. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:52, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Table column sorting

I'm trying to fix a sorting problem in AFI's 100 Years...100 Movies. Some movies have been added to and deleted from the second edition of the list, so in one or the other rank column, there is a blank for these entries. However, when you sort the later list ranking, that puts them at the top of the list, before #1. NR doesn't work. What's the standard solution? Clarityfiend (talk) 02:49, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The {{sort}} template. I take it you want them at the bottom when sorted ascending, so they go 1, 2, 3, ..., 100, not-rated, not-rated, not-rated, etc.? Then use {{sort|101|}}, which sorts a given cell as 101 and displays blank. —Cryptic 03:10, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
