Ford is issuing a recall of some 668,000 F-150 pickup trucks across the globe due to a possible transmission issue in which the truck can suddenly downshift into first gear. The recall affects certain trucks from the 2014 model year; however, Ford has issued this recall in previous years dating back to 2016 for additional model years, including in 2019 when it recalled some 158,971 2011- through 2013-model-year F-150s.
According to documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there may be a problem with a sensor that can cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift to first gear while being driven at any speed, potentially causing the rear wheels to slow down on their own. This could cause a loss of control of the vehicle which can lead to an accident — and numerous complaints have been filed over the years. Ford claims reports of this incident for the 2014 model year trucks number less than that of previous model years recalled.
The recall covers about 552,000 F-150 pickups in the U.S. alone. Transport Canada has not listed the recall at the time of this writing, but we’ll update this post as that information becomes available. The 2016 recall also included the 2012 Ford Mustang coupes and convertibles, as well as the 2012 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator; other model years of those vehicles are not included in this recall.
Ford will notify owners of affected vehicles, who will be advised to take their truck to a dealership to have the powertrain control module software updated, free of charge. You can also check online at Transport Canada, using your VIN, to see if your vehicle is affected by a recall.
