Happy New Year! 2024 has arrived, a monumental year for Chr. Hansen marking our 150th anniversary as well as a new beginning as part of Novonesis (pending final authority approval).   In 1874, the company was founded on a groundbreaking discovery that revolutionized the industrial dairy production in the making. Interestingly, the same product – purified, standardized animal rennet – is still in our portfolio today.   Roughly speaking, the next turning point took place a hundred years later with the invention of DVS® – direct vat set – cultures. This allowed dairies to pour concentrated starter cultures directly into the milk, saving time and costs and ensuring excellent, uniform quality of their finished product.   The new millennium saw profound changes involving new ownership, new business areas, a new corporate strategy strongly committed to sustainability and, ultimately, the announcement in late 2022 of the proposed combination with Novozymes to form a leading, global biosolutions partner.   As we approach Day 1 of this combination, let’s pay tribute to the legacy we are bringing into the future. Season's greetings! As we are about to wrap up 2023, we want to take the opportunity to thank all our followers for a great year – and a very special year, probably the last as Chr. Hansen. It is always exciting what a new year will bring, and 2024 is no exception. Not only does it mark the 150th anniversary of Chr. Hansen’s foundation; it also marks a new beginning, as we expect to combine with Novozymes in the first quarter of 2024 following regulatory approval and together transform into Novenesis – a global biosolutions partner 🌿🌍 We wish you and your loved ones happy holidays, season’s greetings and a happy and prosperous new year!

Coming soon: A new beginning. A new name: Novonesis ✨ We are happy to announce that Novonesis will be the new company name for the future combination of Novozymes and Chr. Hansen*. The name means 'A new beginning' derived from the Greek word 'genesis', which means 'beginning'. Together, we will start an era of biosolutions to help solve some of the biggest challenges facing humanity – using biology. *The name Novonesis will be used once the proposed combination is completed. We expect that to take place in the first quarter of 2024 following regulatory approval. Until final merger control approvals are received, and the proposed combination completes, Novozymes and Chr. Say cheese to innovation! 🧀 Exciting news from the world of plant-based cheese: Carmen Masiá Calabuig, a dedicated PhD student at Chr. Hansen, is leading groundbreaking research in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen's Food Science Department. Carmen is currently putting a final touch on her PhD project “Plant-based cheese evolution” which she has been working on since 2020. Carmen's PhD project showcases the power of lactic acid bacteria fermentation to craft a climate-friendly, plant-based cheese with sensory properties mirroring its dairy counterpart. It's a flavorful victory for sustainability and taste buds alike! Discover how Carmen’s passion for biology started and learn what it’s like to do an industrial PhD at Chr. Hansen.

The UN/FAO has designated today as World Soil Day to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and advocate for its sustainable management. Healthy soil is crucial in supporting sustainable agriculture and protecting plants from harm and disease. At Chr. Hansen Plant Health we take soil health seriously. As World Antimicrobial Awareness Week draws to a close, let's reflect on the critical issue of antibiotic resistance and how we can make a positive impact.  While many factors are out of our control, here are four actionable steps we can all take to mitigate the impact of antibiotic resistance, both at the local and global levels. Let's continue the dialogue and work towards a future where antibiotics remain a powerful tool in the fight against infections.  Together, we can make a difference! 💪 

Earlier this week, the biosolutions sector was gathered at the first-ever Biosolutions High Level Summit in Copenhagen, featuring a great line-up of prominent speakers, including Danish Minister for Industry, Business, and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov, the Danish Minister for Food & Agri, Jacob Jensen, Director of Tænketanken EUROPA Lykke Friis, and our colleague David Zilber, former Noma-chef and fermentation expert, who delivered a keynote speech about the power of fermentation. “The dawn of civilized cultures, cities, societies were based on fermentation of some of humanity’s first domesticated species …. And when microbes come into the picture as solutions to a human problem, they have the abilities that you couldn’t even dream of. They evolve, they problem solve, they iterate,” said David. The breadth and depth of biosolutions were showcased. Fermented foods, plant-based burgers by Matr, biobricks by Mason, biobased fabrics for clothing by Henrik Vibskov and Pond, fermented binder for asphalt Visibuilt. Solutions inspired by nature, based on biomaterials, and developed to address some of the world’s biggest challenges 🌍 The sector is gaining momentum and has moved up on the agenda! Thanks to Alliance for Biosolutions, Novo Nordisk Foundation and DI Bio for uniting such a powerhouse of start-ups, funds, investors, decision-makers, businesses, and scientists committed to shaping a future inspired by nature for nature 🌱
