🌊 World Oceans Day & National Donut Day: A Perfect Blend for Blue Ocean Gear! 🍩 We are celebrating two fantastic occasions: World Oceans Day and National Donut Day! At Blue Ocean Gear, we couldn't think of a better way to honor these days than by getting our team out on the water for a paddle right outside our office in beautiful Sausalito, CA. World Oceans Day reminds us of the critical role our oceans play in sustaining life on Earth. It's a day to reflect on the importance of preserving our marine environments and to take action towards protecting our blue planet. (On the other hand, National Donut Day is a delightful celebration of everyone's favorite sweet treat. Originating in 1938, this day honors the "Donut Lassies" of the Salvation Army who served donuts to soldiers during World War I) Our team at Blue Ocean Gear is taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of the ocean while enjoying some delicious donuts. It's a perfect opportunity to bond, reflect on our mission to innovate ocean gear, and enjoy the stunning views of the San Francisco Bay. Join us in celebrating these special days by taking a moment to appreciate the ocean and maybe even indulging in a donut or two. Let's continue to work together to protect our oceans and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. #WorldOceansDay #NationalDonutDay #BlueOceanGear #Sausalito

The Global Ghost Gear Initiative recently hosted its Annual Meeting, with stakeholders from all over the world including representatives from the fishing industry, seafood companies, governments, NGO’s, and fishing tech companies, including our CEO Kortney Opshaug. Lost fishing gear, also referred to as ghost gear, is one of the most lethal forms of marine debris as it results in staggering losses of marine life, from small fish to seabirds to marine mammals. The discussions led by the GGGI on ways to tackle this issue through education, cleanup, and prevention are critical on the path for elimination of this problem forever. Blue Ocean Gear has been a leader in enabling fishing fleets to address ghost gear using our Smart Buoy tracking technology to prevent gear loss, and we will continue to be part of these global efforts as we all work toward ghost gear-free oceans. #ghostgear #sustainablefishing #SDG14 #oceantech

We're very appreciative of our partnership with NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration and their Technology Partnerships office for celebrating this success story. #blueoceangear #marineinnovation #smartbuoys
We're celebrating National Small Business Week with a new #NOAASBIR success story about two NOAA-funded small businesses that are partnering to help marine mammals and fishermen with innovative ropeless fishing gear technology. When a #SmallBusiness uses NOAA #SeedFunding to transform an idea into a technology that is available on the open marketplace, it is a big win for both the company and the NOAA Small Business Innovation Research program. But it is a unique double-win when two NOAA-funded small businesses team up to combine their innovative technologies for a good cause. Blue Ocean Gear was highlighted as a gear manufacturer at SFP's Bycatch Solutions Showcase at Seafood Expo North America/Seafood Processing North America a few weeks ago. Ryan Lind of Blue Ocean Gear tracked one of the company’s smart buoys and demonstrated how its technology could be used to trace traps that drift off. Paired with traditional gear, it can also prevent “ghost gear,” or a lost apparatus that may then catch a whale or sea turtle, injuring or killing them, and alert fishers when traps might move into areas that are closed because of whale migration. ecoRI News with the story ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/d5pKdzPb

Nothing sums up the meaning of the term "ghost fishing" like the hauling up of lost gear that has continued fishing, such as this recent example in Norway where two lost nets were recovered. In total, almost 700 kg of fish were trapped in the nets, all caught in a cycle where each one captured becomes bait for more fish to become caught. This ghost catch is not harvestable, and represents a massive loss both for the marine ecosystem as well as financially for the fishery. Recovering lost gear is part of the solution, but to truly eliminate this problem we must prevent it from happening in the first place by tracking gear! #ghostgear #fishing #oceantech #sdg14

We are always thrilled when captains and crew put our products to work. Our smart buoy technology is delivering real efficiency to fisherman around the world. Thank you to the FRDC - Fisheries Research and Development Corporation for sharing this content.
“When we came across the Smart Buoy idea, we put those on. … the crew and I can now spend time at home instead of time out at sea looking for gear,” Paddy Daniels, like many other fishers in Western Australia, continues to embrace innovative products and tools to increase business efficiency and profitability. This allows him and his crew to spend more time where it matters most – family. Listen to Paddy’s experience working with Smart Buoys. This video is one of a series created as part of an FRDC Project (2022-209) encapsulating the stories of commercial fishers and the role their seafood plays for our local and international communities.
