Vascular Neurology Fellowship

Providing Focused Training in Vascular Neurology

The Vascular Neurology Fellowship at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is a yearlong training opportunity for physicians who desire to pursue further training in the ever expanding field of vascular neurology.  The program offers two Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved positions each year and applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service in conjunction with the National Resident Matching Program.

With two comprehensive stroke centers in the city of Austin, fellows have the opportunity to gain experience on a high volume of challenging and complex cases.  Fellows work in close collaboration with colleagues in neurology, neurocritical care, emergency medicine, neurosurgery and neuroendovascular surgery. Fellows also rotate with physical medicine and rehabilitation colleagues to fully understand the long-term impact of disability and stroke disease on the daily lives of patients and their families.

A main feature of this fellowship is an active Stroke Code Program that focuses on the use of MRI as the preferred initial imaging modality and tenecteplase as the preferred thrombolytic agent. There is also a strong emphasis in acute stroke neuroimaging, quality improvement sessions and participation in major clinical trials and stroke research initiatives.

The one year program is designed to train compassionate and highly competent vascular neurologists who will have successful and impactful careers in any future setting they should choose.

The Vascular Neurology Fellowship is affiliated with Dell Med’s Department of Neurology.

Training Facilities

Ascension Seton Medical Center.

Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin is a 447 bed facility that features a comprehensive stroke center and functions primarily as a community based specialty hospital. The emergency room has computed tomography, computed tomography angiography and computed tomography perfusion in addition to magnetic resonance, magnetic resonance angiography and magnetic resonance perfusion.

Dell Seton Medical Center at UT Austin.

Dell Seton Medical Center is a 211 bed facility located about two miles away from Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin. It was built within the grounds at The University of Texas at Austin and completed in May 2017. It is a comprehensive stroke center and level I trauma center. The emergency room has computed tomography, computed tomography angiography and computed tomography perfusion in addition to magnetic resonance, magnetic resonance angiography and magnetic resonance perfusion.

Health Transformation Building.

Completed in May 2017, the Health Transformation Building, located on the UT Austin campus, has over 20 examination rooms. The clinic provides a secretary, manager, medical assistants and electronic health records. It is also shared with neuro-interventional surgery and vascular neurosurgery.
