Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship

Training Patient-Centered Physicians in Maternal-Fetal Medicine

The mission of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is to advance the care of women at risk for obstetrical complications through innovative education, patient-centered care and scientific discovery. The program is focused on shaping a unique and comprehensive educational environment that prepares physicians to practice in a dynamic, value-based health care system. Additionally, the program encourages its trainees’ commitment to lifelong learning and evidence-based practice to provide outstanding individual care and sustain measurable improvements in the health of the greater population.

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship’s educational goal is to provide advanced training to physician-scientists for the medical, surgical, obstetrical, fetal and genetic complications of pregnancy. Upon completion of training, graduates are prepared to practice independently, become leaders in their field, engage in scientific discovery, successfully offer consultation to their peers and deliver high-quality, value-based, patient-centered care to women.

Fellows learn, practice and reinforce person-centered, multidisciplinary and interprofessional care in a system that recognizes and rewards value by collaborating with and providing subspecialty-specific consultation to other providers. Additionally, the program combines traditional and innovative curricula and teaching methods through the following overall program objectives.

  • Develop and refine comprehensive, advanced medical knowledge and procedural skills to provide outstanding patient care in the following areas: medical and surgical complications of pregnancy, fetal evaluation, genetic evaluation of women, families, and fetuses, ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis, critical care of pregnant women, interpretation of perinatal pathology, care/collaboration with other specialists in caring for women who require cesarean hysterectomy, and infectious diseases that affect mother or fetus.
  • Learn and apply the principles of value-based care to promote cost-effectiveness, improve patient safety and enhance the quality of experience for the patients in our community.
  • Collaborate with and lead cooperative, interprofessional, and multidisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes.
  • Investigate and evaluate patient care practices, appraise and assimilate scientific evidence and improve patient care through continuous life-long learning, self-assessment, teaching and scientific discovery.
  • Adhere to ethical and moral principles and sensitivity to diverse patient populations.

The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship is affiliated with Dell Med’s Department of Women’s Health.

Training Facilities

Ascension Seton Medical Center.

Ascension Seton Medical Center is a top-rated teaching hospital that offers the full spectrum of medical and surgical care. It is the main site for the women’s health’s residency training program. It features a Level 4 labor and delivery unit that has capacity for 5300 deliveries, as well as an antepartum service and a Level 3 NICU. Fellows actively participate in patient management on labor and delivery and the antepartum service. Construction is underway to open a new Women’s Tower that will expand the currently available facilities.

Dell Seton Medical Center at UT Austin.

Dell Seton Medical Center — the primary teaching hospital for Dell Med — was built in 2017 by Ascension Seton. As Austin’s only urban Level I Trauma Center, it serves a diverse population. Dell Seton’s collaboration with the medical school, new outpatient sites and wide range of specialty services make it the ideal site for many gynecologic and subspecialty surgeries.

Medical Park Tower.
Medical Park Tower

Medical Park Tower is the academic home of the women’s health. It features a state-of-the-art ultrasound imaging center that performs midtrimester anatomic surveys, fetal echocardiograms and first-trimester detailed anatomy scans. Fellows participate in the imaging center to learn and finely tune their ultrasound scanning skills and then take on graduated responsibility for interpreting and reporting ultrasounds as they progress through the program.

Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas.

Dell Children’s Medical Center provides a comprehensive spectrum of pediatric specialties and subspecialties, and it also houses the Comprehensive Fetal Care Center and the Maternal Care Center within the new Specialty Pavilion. Dell Children’s Medical Center features the Special Delivery Unit that specializes in the delivery of infants that require immediate medical or surgical care in the immediate postnatal period. The SDU operating rooms are where intrauterine procedures and surgeries are performed.

Reception area of the Comprehensive Fetal Care Center.

The Comprehensive Fetal Care center provides state-of-the-art imaging and prenatal diagnostic evaluations for pregnancies with complex fetal issues. Together with the Fetal Heart Program, the center co-manages pregnancies complicated by fetal cardiac anomalies.

A full-time genetic counselor, social worker and perinatal behavioral health program are an integral part of the center. A fetal MRI imaging service is adjacent in the Dell Children’s Hospital along with a Level 4 NICU. The Maternal Care center is located next to the fetal care center and provides obstetrical care to the families seen at the center. Having all services in one location allows for seamlessly integrated care for families.

The CFCC provides the opportunity for fellows to acquire advanced skills in diagnostic ultrasound and fetal echocardiography in addition to involvement in the management of a wide spectrum of cases involving fetal medicine and surgery.
