🏭 The global search for low-emission #industrial #processes has fueled interest in #greenhydrogen. The potential applications of #hydrogen span a variety of sectors, but many experts say industry could benefit the most from green gas. This is true for several energy-intensive industries, and numerous projects are investigating the use of green hydrogen in the #steel, #glass, #cement and #chemical industries. 🔗 However, only a few people think of #aluminum when it comes to the use of hydrogen in the process industry. Yet aluminum production is one of the most carbon-intensive industries of all. The aluminum industry can therefore significantly reduce its environmental footprint by relying more on #recycling and additionally using #renewable hydrogen instead of natural gas. The potential is huge: according to the Umweltbundesamt - German Environment Agency produced 541,000 t of primary aluminum at a total of four locations in 2015. 🇭 The company Norsk Hydro from #Norway has produced secondary aluminium on an industrial scale for the first time in the history of the process industry - using only green hydrogen instead of the usual natural gas. 💚 #Greenhydrogen is seen as a beacon of hope for #sustainable industry. Yet there is another molecule that could become even more important than #hydrogen in the short and medium term for achieving the energy transition. #Ammonia as a hydrogen vector has the potential to make a significant contribution to the #CO2-free energy transition. 🇲🇽 Hy2gen, a manufacturer of renewable hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives equipment, is planning to build a 200 MW renewable ammonia production plant in Campeche, #Mexico. The project, called Marengo, will initially produce 180,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia annually for customers in the EU. The plant is scheduled to come on stream in 2028. 💡 "#Marengo will play an important role in the production of renewable ammonia for the European Union," says Hy2gen #CEO Cyril DUFAU-SANSOT. "This is mainly due to the ideal conditions at the site, such as constant wind and many hours of sunshine. MARENGO's electricity needs will therefore be met by a 415 MW wind farm and a 230 MW solar farm." ✏ After the signing of the cooperation agreement, feasibility studies and FEED studies will follow. These will collect essential design data and information on the operation of the production facility. thyssenkrupp Steel received some good news on support for their efforts to reduce their carbon emissions during a visit from the German Economic Affairs & Climate Action Minister Robert Habeck last week. As thyssenkrupp's CEO Miguel Ángel López Borrego says, the company, the region, and the country are "becoming pioneers for climate-neutral steel production. This is a great day for climate change mitigation and an important milestone for the development of sustainable hydrogen economy in Germany." 🚘 Research and industry are working together on more environmentally friendly production of lightweight components for the automotive industry, coordinated by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon. The joint project "S3-ALU," funded by the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz, will test the replacement of pure aluminum with recycled #aluminum, which could reduce the #CO2 footprint per vehicle by 55 percent. 🌞 The savings potential is enormous: To produce one unit of secondary aluminum, only five percent of the energy is consumed compared to the production of primary aluminum. Transferred to #automotive production, this means a saving of 0.7 metric tons of CO2 per vehicle or 700,000 metric tons of CO2 for annual SUV production in Germany. 👩💻 Different compositions of secondary aluminum will be modeled using a #digitaltwin to find the best possible substitute for the original. This means that the many material variants do not all have to be tested in experiments, but can be explored in the model, saving time and resources. "The development of a digital twin, i.e., a multi-scale physical representation of the material under investigation - the aluminum secondary alloy - will significantly shorten experimental efforts and make it possible to evaluate the available scraps of non-uniform quality in terms of their potential use in material fabrication or production," says Eugen Gazenbiller, a doctoral student at the Hereon Institute for Surface Research.

♨️ Bringing down the cost of industrial heating with solar thermal — and sand? A Finnish-Swedish collaboration between scientists at Dalarna University, Polar Night Energy Oy, and Absolicon Solar Collector AB found that they could reduce the levelised cost of heat (LCOH) by creating a scenario that combines solar thermal coupled with water storage and PV connected to sand storage.
