Girls‘ Day bei ATP in Hamburg
Am 25. April hat ATP Hamburg – dieses Jahr zum zweiten Mal – am Girls‘ Day / Mädchen-Zukunftstag 2024 teilgenommen. Auch diesmal war die Veranstaltung wieder ein großer Erfolg: Unsere Kolleg:innen hatten ein spannendes, vielseitiges Programm zusammengestellt und gewährten den Schüler:innen Einblicke in die Zusammenarbeit von Architekt:innen und Ingenieur:innen. Die acht Mädchen zwischen 10 und 12 Jahren schnupperten voller Neugier in die verschiedenen Arbeitsbereiche hinein und wurden – wie man sehen kann! – auch selbst aktiv und beeindruckten uns mit ihren zeichnerischen Talenten. Ein besonderes Highlight war selbstverständlich wieder die VR-Brille.
Ein großes Dankeschön an alle, die diesen Tag organisiert und mitgestaltet haben: Marta Palma Crespo, Isabella Nowaczynski, Dominik Glück, Giulia Peruzzo, E. Andrea Ruiz de Somocurcio Cruzado, Patrizia Bengel und Melanie Jäger.

The rise of Sponge Cities: Under the 'Green' roof, is a 'Blue' roof!

When we look at Nature-based Solution (#NbS) implementation in the built- environment, it comes down to building materials, building systems and building sites (a good review here from Dimitra Theochari and colleagues https://lnkd.in/gaeCGZWH).
When buildings are constructed, they seal the ground and it’s basically forever (as long a the building exists at least). Similar to concrete and asphalt sealing, hydrologically it is a challenge to handle for cities: “surface runoff may lead to soil erosion, impaired water quality and the risk of flooding” (para. 16)
The global hospitality sector has been discussing and implementing green roofs for a while now. However, how about the roof becomes a sponge capturing and retaining rainwater, slowly releasing it to the drainage system when required or holding the water when needed during drought? This is your blue-green roof which works as stormwater management – something increasingly needed in cities as reported by this review in The Guardian today:

In the first half of last week's session, Carlo introduced us to the need for and solution of Declare and the Living Building Challenge. Presented with though provoking questions like, "are all manufacturers polluters?" and "can positive products truly exist?" we explored the precautionary principle and the value of transparency. Carlo introduced the ILFI Red List of toxic and harmful materials and then presented us with the Living Product Challenge's concept of hand-printing and how it differs from concepts like the carbon footprint.
In the second module, Dimitra took us around the world with case studies of innovative rainwater management projects, urban hanging gardens, micro-wetlands, river restoration projects, tiny-forests, and much more. Her talk culminated with her latest fascinating project where the 2000 year old Hadrian aqueduct is being brought back to life as part of Athen's climate resilience and heat reduction plan. The main take away: Small projects aren't always transferable linearly to large scale projects, but small solutions replicated strategically can create big change.
