Student assistant for biological sample preparation (m/f/div)

The Max-Planck-Institute for Neurobiology of Behaviour – caesar (MPINB) is a neuroethology institute located in Bonn that studies how the collective activity of the vast numbers of interconnected neurons in the brain gives rise to the plethora of animal behaviors. Our research spans a large range of scales from the nano-scale imaging of brain circuitry, to large-scale functional imaging of brain circuitry during behavior, to the quantification of natural animal behaviors.

The Research Group Neural Circuits is offering two positions as

Student assistant for biological sample preparation (m/f/div)

We need you for practical lab work at the institute! For this we are looking for highly motivated students interested in participating in research projects investigating cellular dynamics in the brain. This position offers the exciting opportunity to engage in research with the Drosophila (fruit fly) model system and requires conducting high-precision surgeries in flies. These manipulations are performed under a steromicroscope, with a custom laser-cutting setup, and with (robotic) micromanipulators. The manipulation and dissection of flies for imaging experiments requires good manual skills and makes a critical contribution to our research projects.

What we expect from you:

  • You are enrolled at a university in the Cologne/Bonn area as a regular student in a natural science subject (biology, chemistry, physics, engineering or related fields). A background in neuroscience is not required.
  • You have already gained some work experience in the lab and are dedicated and motivated for accurate and careful experimentation
  • You enjoy performing delicate tasks such as working with forceps on biological samples under a stereomicroscope
  • Working with custom built scientific equipment, such as for laser surgery
  • Performing basic genetic crosses with flies
  • You are interested in neurobiology and in interacting with members of the team to address questions underlying the workings of biological circuits in the brain
  • You live in the Bonn area as this position requires working at the institute at least three times a week (no remote work possible)

What we offer:

  • You will work in a multidisciplinary, international team
  • Cutting-edge equipped laboratories with a range of novel behavior and imaging paradigms
  • Salary in line with the Max Planck regulations
  • Employee benefits, a family-friendly culture, and flexible working hours
