🔎📒24 Anecdotes: AutoScouts' Stories Uncovered - #11 Feel the excitement of our teams as we launch a new product. As part of our #ouryear24 campaign, our Director of Engineering, Mathias Eckert, shares insights from the kickoff of #AutoScout24Smyle. In April 2021, I stepped into my role as Director of Engineering for the Smyle tech organization at AutoScout24. Back then, we were a small team of just three engineers. But with a shared vision and hard work, we rapidly expanded our team to 30 talented engineers. In an incredible turnaround, we launched AutoScout24 Smyle, a fully functional online car sales platform within just six months. I’ll never forget the thrill of launch day. On September 15th, 2021, we gathered in our Munich office, surrounded by many stakeholders. With a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation, we pressed the button to go live. Smyle was then displayed for everyone to see on a big screen. The room erupted in cheers, and champagne bottles were popped. I felt immense pride in our team and our collective effort. Despite the high-pressure situation due to some initial technical issues, everyone pulled together seamlessly that day to make it a huge success. Our Smyle launch was more than just a product release – it was a testament to our capability and determination. Many doubted that we could launch such a complex product in just six months, but we proved them wrong. We showed that with teamwork and perseverance, we could make the impossible happen. 👉What's the #ouryear24 campaign about? There are many electric trucks on our streets, and all of these trucks will eventually need to visit workshops. For our technicians, this represents a new area of knowledge and potential danger. In my Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Technology and Media in Education at ZHAW Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften ZID, I created a course for workshop foremen and electrical safety managers. The course includes podcasts, an AI-supported learning coach, and learning videos. My focus for the learning videos is to avoid written text so they can be easily translated into other languages. The video needs to be produced only once, and then I will change only the audio trakc. The speech is AI-generated, and the translations will also be supported by AI. This milestone was achieved in the Moroccan desert and illustrates the potential longevity of EVs. Despite requiring several battery and motor replacements, the car's durability suggests that EVs could outlast traditional gas-powered vehicles, which typically face significant repairs or become obsolete after about 12 to 15 years. The simpler mechanics of EVs, with fewer moving parts, contribute to their longevity and lower maintenance costs, making them a viable long-term option for consumers. The key factor in the lifespan of EVs is their batteries, which degrade over time. Advances in battery technology, such as those promising up to 1 million miles, are likely to extend the useful life of EVs significantly. This could revolutionize car ownership, making it possible for a single vehicle to last a lifetime for an average driver. However, the high-tech nature of EVs means that consumers may still be tempted to upgrade to newer models with improved features, similar to the tech industry's model of frequent updates and new releases. Despite the potential for extended use, car manufacturers might inhibit the longevity of EVs by creating incentives for consumers to purchase new models. This could involve making older models incompatible with new software updates or advanced features, paralleling the tech industry's approach to product obsolescence. Additionally, the "right to repair" debate could impact EV maintenance, as specialized parts and training are required for repairs. Ensuring the availability of these resources to independent mechanics is crucial for maximizing the environmental benefits and longevity of EVs. 🚛Keynote address: 30 years of brake-by-wire systems: from the origins to today’s trends🚗 Jochen Buck, Project Leader of Electronic Brake Management Software at Daimler Truck AG Truck shared insights in the first keynote address of EuroBrake 2024. Jochen highlighted that brake-by-wire has been a game-changer in the trucking industry for nearly 30 years. Introduced in 1996, brake-by-wire has enhanced safety, efficiency, and comfort for truck drivers, fleet owners, and all road users. A tragic event in 1987 spurred the introduction of brake-by-wire in trucking as a critical safety feature, and its success hinges on a robust safety concept. Electrification is key to the development of electronically controlled braking systems, and looking ahead, brake-by-wire will be crucial in enabling automated driving functions. This technology has significantly evolved alongside advancements in materials, pneumatic brake technology, software, and CPUs. Electronic braking systems on tractors and trailers have notably reduced braking distances. The comprehensive test, spanning 13 Chinese models from the last three years, demonstrated their technical capabilities to match European standards. Remarkably, all but two of the tested cars earned a full five-star rating in the crash test. Additionally, the Asian vehicles exhibited commendable performance in the avoidance test and stability program (ESP). For 120 years, Stuttgart-Untertürkheim has been the beating heart of Mercedes-Benz powertrain. The success story continues into the electric age with our Mercedes-Benz eCampus. This new, state-of-the-art competence centre for development of cells and batteries is where our scientists and engineers will develop future generations of advanced #batteries and battery cells for our growing portfolio of electric vehicles. We laid the foundation stone on May 31, 2022 and we are continuously advancing the construction site. Conducting battery cell R&D in-house is an important part of our sustainable business strategy and central to our 'Design for Environment' approach. This is how we drive battery #circularity from the very start. The cells inside the battery hold the key to efficiency, energy density and resource conservation. With innovative new chemistries, we can squeeze even more power into smaller, lighter packages using fewer resources. This is how we plan to make our batteries of the future more sustainable. At the eCampus, we will ultimately research, develop and build battery cells as well as test cells, modules and new battery generations. Only this way, can we maximise efficiency and ensure as many materials as possible stay “in the loop”. This is how we are driving electric mobility through #innovation. Welcome to the future.
