Yesterday, the listed Olympic Stadium Berlin, which was converted into a football and multi-functional stadium by #schlaichbergermannpartner, had the honor of hosting the final of the European Football Championship. It was an exciting match between the two final teams, England and Spain. Congratulations to Spain on their successful tournament and on winning the title! As part of the conversion, the stadium was equipped with a grandstand roof by sbp. The structure of the roof consists of 76 identical steel trussed girders, which are arranged radially around the stadium, with the bottom chord resting on "tree" columns and slightly offset from the existing building. Particularly noteworthy is the opening on the long side of the stadium, which is caused by the marathon gate and highlights the historical axis. We are proud that we were able to contribute to this tournament with five of our stadiums. It was a pleasure to welcome and host all the people from so many different countries! A wide, column-free space atop of five mega-columns was created for the new National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas. #schlaichbergermannpartner worked together with Rafael Viñoly Architects to design an innovative structural steel system to achieve this striking feature. Michael Stein, Managing Director and Robert Hellyer, Associate Director in #sbp's New York office covered the structural challenges and outstanding features of the building in their article for the American Institute of Steel Construction. You can read about it here → https://loom.ly/DkUe-50
A museum dedicated to celebrating the country’s most accomplished veterans needed an inspiring, dynamic space--and structural steel delivered. The National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation chose a wide open design by Rafael Viñoly Architects and schlaich bergermann partner sbp for its Arlington, Texas museum. These firms collaborated to develop a novel structural system to support a primary feature of the museum--an elevated 200 ft by 200 ft by 35 ft tall steel-framed exhibition hall space--atop five megacolumns. Read about the ingenuity behind the National Medal of Honor Museum at aisc.org/dynamic-design. We are pleased to be part of the project and excited to share our design for the Mac Point Multipurpose Stadium!
Concept designs for the new Mac Point Multipurpose Stadium in Hobart have been released. Celebrating the launch, COX Director Alastair Richardson was at Macquarie Point alongside Tasmanian Minister for Sport and Events the Hon Nic Street, Peter Walker from Cumulus Studio and Anne Beach from Macquarie Point Development Corporation. The project promises to be a game-changer for the state, offering a uniquely Tasmanian experience that respects the site's rich heritage while incorporating innovative design including a timber and steel framed fixed ETFE translucent roof. "The Mac Point Multipurpose Stadium represents a unique opportunity to design a stadium and events precinct that celebrates the rich culture and heritage of this place,” says COX Director Stuart Harper. “The fully roofed stadium design showcases Tasmanian timber technology, delivers something special for each user and integrates hospitality with heart: all contributing to a presence and fan experience that will be unmistakably Tasmanian." The design team, led by COX and local architect partner Cumulus Studio is working with the engineering team which includes AECOM and roofing specialist engineers schlaich bergermann partner sbp. Together we considered the history of the site, surrounding spaces, user needs, and the desire to create a truly exceptional fan experience. The stadium’s low profile built-form and woven-style façade references the previous roundhouse structure at the Hobart Rail Yard as well as local maritime heritage. It is culturally informed under the guidance of Palawa community members by reflecting the continuing cultural practice of weaving, representing the opportunity to weave together cultures and stories. pitt&sherry, PMY Group, SPORTENG, Introba, Aldanmark Pty Ltd, COVA, Futago, ERA-co, Incognitus, IR Risk, Perfectly Paired, Jensen Hughes, IIMBE, Capital Insight Pty Limited, Duo Projects, Rare, WT (Australia), Lauren Steller

Tonight, the MHP Arena will receive special attention from all over the world when Spain meets Germany in the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship. We wish both teams the best of luck and an exciting game under our roof construction. We are delighted to welcome these two amazing teams to our stadium in Stuttgart. The MHP-Arena (formerly known as Mercedes-Benz Arena and Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadium) and sbp have a long-shared history. sbp has been repeatedly commissioned for modernization and renovation work on the stadium. This included the installation of the new membrane roof in 1993, the conversion into a pure football stadium in 2011 and the exchange of the membrane skin in 2017. The most recent modernization was carried out for the 2024 European Championships, which involved the renewal of the grandstand, and several extensions works. The main objectives were to preserve the original structure, ensure the load transfer during the modernization and recycle as many materials as possible. Worth noting: the work was carried out during the ongoing match season and provided spectacular images! architecture: asp Architekten GmbH structural engineering: #schlaichbergermannpartner photos: schlaichbergermannpartner #thebeautyofstructures #euro2024 #MHParena #vfbstuttgart

concap has been launched! This week we finally had the opportunity to present concap to the public. It is based on an idea from Mike Schlaich and is developed by schlaich bergermann partner in collaboration with Eckhardt Thomas and thomas gruppe. The product has already generated a lot of interest from leading architects and construction companies. During the event, representatives from #schlaichbergermannpartner and thomas gruppe emphasized the versatility and sustainability of concap, which is inspired by a traditional vaulted ceiling. In particular, they emphasized the significant reduction in CO2 emissions achieved by the material-saving design. Participants had the opportunity to experience concap first-hand in the showroom and see the impact of the product on future architectural projects. The positive response and support from everyone who attended this special event reinforces our vision to make the building industry of the future more sustainable. Thank you for joining us on this exciting journey. What a colorful inauguration for this pionieering pedestrian bridge in #Paris! Together with EXPLORATIONS ARCHITECTURE and August, #sbp designed this exemplary project of sustainable #reuse for large scale infrastructure. The pedestrian bridge utilizes the deck of the former movable bridge on site, which has been repurposed and transformed into a new crossing over the Saint-Denis canal, requiring minimal deconstruction and reconstruction. Additionally, material like the existing steel was stored, inspected, and reconditioned directly adjacent to the new site, helping to minimize transport emissions. Thank you to Plaine Commune for the confidence and to the teams from RAZEL-BEC and Eiffage Métal, who realized this ambitious and unique project within a short timeframe. And congratulations to everyone involved in this project! #sbpbridges
