⚽ What’s most important about a football jersey? The material: light-weight and breathable while resistant. Sports gear is a high-tech industry, yet highly dependent on petroleum. Jonathan Meakin wants to change that. The solution: algae. 🌱 Jonathan works for adidas innovation and is part of the publicly funded BIOTEXFUTURE project, bringing together over 100 universities, research institutions and companies. Their goal is nothing short of a revolution: Making sports gear sustainable by converting the textile value chain from petroleum-based to bio-based. 🎬If you want to know what a shoe made from algae looks like and why Bavaria is a great place for sports, watch our interview with Jonathan. #FromLabToPitch #UnitedByFootball #EURO2024 #Sustainability

⚽♟️ What does a football coach need to develop a good strategy? Experience and data! 📊 Where is the ball, how fast are my players, who passes to whom, etc. To gain these data, top level clubs equip their stadium with expensive high-tech cameras and sensors. But what about the small clubs? Jochen Seitz has the solution: The iBall_R2 project. Together with international partners, he developed an inexpensive electronic device for players and the ball, keeping track of both via radio transmission and even measuring their velocity. This allows a coach to analyse all activity on the field during training or in a match. Working at Fraunhofer IIS enables Jochen to work closely with science and industry alike, fostering innovation. 🎬 Learn more about the iBall_R2 project and what Fraunhofer IIS has to offer for international researchers and innovators. #FromLabToPitch #UnitedByFootball #EURO2024

⚽🧠 Every coach in pro football knows: Winning or losing is decided by tactics and psychology. A penalty shootout is a battle of nerves, not skills. Top players also need to train their brains in aspects such as fast decision-making, mental strength and team synchronization. Adam Beavan is Coordinator of Science & Innovation at the German top-league club TSG Hoffenheim. He is researching how cognitive training techniques can help improve physical performance. To achieve this, Adam focuses on measuring athletes’ executive functions and how they translate into a player’s performance on the field. 🎤 In our interview, Adam talks about how to train the brain, Hoffenheim’s role in football research, and why you should consider doing research in Germany. 😕 Ever heard of the ‘unhappy triad’ in football? Hint: It’s not the sad team, coach and fans after a lost game. It’s actually the most feared injury: The rupture of two ligaments and the meniscus at the same time, benching a player for the whole season. 🤕🦵 Giordano Scinicarelli wants to help: In his research as postdoc at the prestigious German Sports University Cologne (Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln) he focuses not only on the rehabilitation of knee injuries, but also on how to effectively prevent them. One reason for choosing Germany for his research, is the excellent structures for high quality research. 🎬 Learn more about Giordanos’s research and the other reasons he decided to do his research in Germany. #FromLabToPitch #UnitedByFootball #EURO2024 #SportHealth
