Mission completed: Biology lighting up brighter than chemistry! Light from Proteins for Proteins. Mimotype Technologies GmbH is about to successfully conclude its SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen validation contract by demonstrating that the emission of fluorescent proteins in solid-state can surpass commercially available organic dyes. We optimized the overall composite thin film architecture across key dimensions for optical materials such as emission specificity, life time, resistance against photobleaching and quantum yield. Our films perform spectral conversion, giving sun light a deep red boost that increases photosynthetic rates of crop and drives growth and higher yields. Biomanufactured optical materials enable nanotechnologists to interface closer with biological matter and the built environment in non-toxic, tissue compatible and ecologically seamless ways. A huge achievement for the team: Danilo Flores, Paul Aspacher, Laura Bernáez Timón and our lab wizard Erfan Moradi. Shout out to our hard-working colleagues from DWI - Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials: Felix Jakob and Tina-Marie Thomas who supplied us with previously unfathomable quantities of GFP, the good stuff :). Our summer interns who helped in pushing this forward during the last leg as well: Victoria Clancy, Joshua Varela and Shalini Satish. Challenged by the brilliant team of SPRIND - Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen – Patrick P. Rose, Eileen Stahl and Nicolas Krink – we unearthed nature's glow.
