Taking a moment to recognize the excellent work of our global PrimeServ team, today we shine a spotlight on PrimeServ Panama. Led by Juan Hinestroza and Abimelec Herrera, this dedicated team recently accomplished a challenging task aboard the vessel “Solar Claire.” Their mission? To rejuvenate the vessel’s MAN B&W 6 G50ME-C9.5-TIII engine by replacing the main #engine crosshead lower bearing shell on all units. The service was prompted by fatigue damage to the main engine crosshead bearing. Our technicians discovered scratched lower crosshead bearing shells, indicating initial signs of fatigue damage that could reduce lubrication efficiency, accelerating wear on the bearing surfaces, negatively impacting performance and fuel consumption, and jeopardizing the safe operation of the engine. The team at #PrimeServ #Panama meticulously adhered to the plan, checking the crosshead bearing top clearance before dismantling and after assembly, thoroughly cleaning and inspecting various parts, and installing new lower bearing shells. After rigorous testing, the engine operated flawlessly. The Solar Claire now sails smoothly, ensuring peak efficiency and preventing future breakdowns. This package facilitates a smooth transition to methanol retrofit, based on the part-load optimised MAN L21/31 Mk2 GenSet. The DF-M ready package includes different components, such as: – DF-M cylinder cover prepared for the methanol injector – Trigger-wheel to be installed inside the engine crankcase – Exhaust gas pipe, incl. explosion valve – Side covers prepared for splash oil system – Engine side covers for hotbox – Upgraded SaCoS engine control system The retrofit enables your GenSets to operate on green methanol in a cost-effective and risk-mitigated manner. This will ensure the fuel flexibility for GenSet power generation on large merchant vessels.     "The biggest challenge the shipping industry has to face is environmental. I’d say we’re talking about $100 billion of overall investments for the shipping industry,” states Xavier Leclerq, Vice President of CMASHIPS, in our latest interview on MAN Discover. The challenge is huge indeed: “There are some 90,000 ships sailing over the world, and at some point the whole fleet will have to be replaced,” Leclerq adds. As the maritime industry grapples with these environmental challenges, CMA CGM, which operates close to 600 vessels, stands at the forefront of decarbonization. And when it comes to integrating the latest decarbonization technology into the world’s maritime fleet, Xavier Leclercq doesn’t hesitate: “Implement, measure, learn and improve”. That is why Ulstein Verft AS, Norway has ordered MAN 12V175D-MEV methanol-ready engines for the newbuilding of four Commissioning Service Operation Vessels for Bernhard Schulte Offshore. Power limitations, new operating ranges for main engines, and varying economical ship service speeds may pose challenges and offer opportunities. Our retrofit study provides insights into the crucial role of CP propeller blade designs, aft ship designs, and wake field optimization, along with upgrade opportunities. MAN Energy Solutions’ R&D experts excel in the various disciplines required to optimize aft ship parameters. We focus on perfecting the layout and hydrodynamic propeller integration, harmonizing with the ship’s hull and any flow-guiding devices (such as pre-swirl and wake equalizing ducts, pre-swirl fins, or vortex generators integrated before the propeller). Additionally, a fairing cone or propeller hub cap fins can be deployed at the hub aft edge of the propeller. Our hydrodynamic edge and tailored customization are often based on the most popular retrofit combination, featuring new propeller blades, a fairing cone, and the MAN Alpha EcoBulb rudder bulb. Our constrained heuristic optimization software, built on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), takes a holistic approach to complex multi-factor systems, maximizing the gains from the EcoBulb and fairing cone. EcoBulb solutions seamlessly integrate with existing rudder designs, including spade and fishtail types, high-lift flap designs, and rudders with twisted leading edges.
