Great collaboration with our colleagues from RMIT Centre for Additive Manufacturing!
Cracking is a significant issue in 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐝𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 for numerous high-strength aluminium alloys, such as AA6061. Researchers at the RMIT Centre for Additive Manufacturing, in collaboration with Technische Universität Ilmenau in Germany and the ESRF - The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in France have conducted a novel study using a pulsed laser with ramp-down power modulation to improve the cracking resistance by about 50% compared to the use of a rectangular pulsed laser. They implemented synchrotron in situ X-ray imaging at 100,000 images per second, obtaining ground truth data about changes in melt pool geometry, solidification rate, and thermal gradients. The article titled "In situ observation and reduction of hot-cracks in laser additive manufacturing" is out now in the Journal of 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬. Congratulations to all authors, Yunhui Chen, Duyao Zhang, Patrick O'Toole, Dong Qiu, Marc Seibold, Klaus. Schricker, Jean-Pierre Bergmann, Alexander Rack and Prof. Mark Easton on their wonderful publication. 👏 🌷 Find the paper here: https://lnkd.in/gxxkygsa #additivemanufacturing #3dprinting #RCAM #collabration #research #LB_PBF #rmituniversity

Engineering Sciences Day The Engineering Sciences Day in Schmalkalden focused on the role of engineering in Thuringia's Regional Innovation Strategy (RIS). The state’s strategy addresses social, economic, and environmental issues relevant to the development of Thuringia. In addition to focusing on specific topics, the Engineering Sciences Days also aimed to coordinate important fields of action and research and to link expertise across disciplines. The Production Technology Group presented two posters and scientific talks on friction stir welding ("Development of a method for determining tool damage in friction stir welding tools using linear damage accumulation") and laser beam welding. Congratulations to our colleague Christian Diegel who was awarded the 1st prize by Elmar Dräger, president of Chamber of Engineers Thuringia, and Prof. Thomas Seul for his poster and presentation entitled "High-speed synchrotron X-ray imaging of the melt flow during laser beam welding of high-alloy steel". We are delighted about the award for his work and the results of which are part of the project “WhySpat” (503306266) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The joint project between Technische Universität Ilmenau and IFSW - Institut für Strahlwerkzeuge deals with the influence of intensity distributions on spatter formation during laser beam welding.

📅 Dienstag, 18. Successful completion of the SoundWeldDetector project – inSignA iHub --- #Acoustic #process #monitoring in #laser #beam #welding has been a subject of #research and #development for a number of decades. While most of the methods have been developed for use in a laboratory environment, they are still to be established on an industrial scale. A major reason for this is the detrimental effect of background #noise (e.g. crossjet). However, improvements in #data and #signal #processing as well as #sensor #technology have made it possible to separate relevant signal components for the first time. As part of the "#SoundWeldDetector" project, FRAUNHOFER IZFP, Fraunhofer IDMT and Ilmenauer Fertigungstechnik TU Ilmenau have developed various methods for the in-situ #detection of the #joint #gap during laser beam butt welding on the basis of #acoustic #emissions (AE). The final meeting was held on the 03.06.2024 at the premises of the industrial partner LASOtech Systems GmbH. A demonstrator was presented, which graphically visualizes the functionality of the developed methods (see video). The project was funded by the Free State of Thuringia as part of the InSignA Innovation HUB (project no.: 2021 FG 0062) and with funds from the Leistungszentrum InSignA. The authors are grateful for the continuous support during and after the project period. --- For further information please contact our research associate Leander Schmidt.
