Solid-state batteries have several advantages: they can store more energy and are safer than batteries with liquid electrolytes. However, they do not last as long and their capacity decreases with each charge cycle. But it doesn't have to stay that way: Researchers are already on the trail of the causes. In the journal ACS Energy Letters, a team from Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen, presents a new method for precisely monitoring electrochemical reactions during the operation of a solid-state battery using photoelectron spectroscopy at BESSY II. The results help to improve battery materials and design.

The summit has been an important forum for the ongoing discussion on topics of stability of organic and hybrid perovskite solar cells since 2008. It has resulted in impactful outcomes such as the ISOS protocols for the ageing of third generation solar cells. And is driven by a worldwide community of research experts on the topic of stability of such solar cells. With increasing efficiencies and the potential for broad use cases for third generation solar cells this summit is on the important topic of stability. This theme is especially important as beyond purely efficiency it is a major driver for the viability of a solar cell technology as it is also an important determinant for the resulting levelized cost of energy. The summit will tackle the topic of stability on its various levels from intrinsic stability of materials to methods how to properly protect devices from extrinsic degradation. But also discussing challenges like the metrology of ageing experiments as well as proper design of such experiments.

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 Lea Zimmermann Congratulations to Lea Zimmermann from the #Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells department! The PhD student won a prize for the poster with the best scientific contribution at the International TandemPV Workshop in Amsterdam (25 - 27 July). The topic of the poster was: "Unveiling the Impact of C60-Oxygen Interaction on the Characterisation of Perovskite Solar Cells".

Call for applications for PhD positions in #Berlin

𝗔 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲: 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗭𝗕 On 1 July 2024, 18 summer students from 15 nations started their work at HZB. Until 23 August, they will be supervised in various research teams and take on their own small project. For many students, this is their first contact with research. "We are delighted that there were so many applications for places this year. The summer students are highly motivated to gain new experiences at HZB and in Berlin," says Marieke M. Hoog Antink. Together with Cécile Dufloux, Jennifer Kusch and Ana Sofia Anselmo, she is member of the organisation team. After a brief welcome and an introduction to research at the HZB, the summer students moved on to the departments on the very first day. There they have eight weeks to work independently on a project. They then will present their results to the other students and HZB staff at the end of the programme. An attractive framing programme is offered as well: they will visit the Einstein Park in #Potsdam, followed by a tour of the #Adlershof science campus, during which they will visit the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, PTB and BESSY II. At the Wannsee campus, the programme includes eye tumour therapy. The students will also attend a workshop on entrepreneurship offered by the HZB Technology Transfer department. The summer students will blog about their experiences at work and during their spare time. Antonia Rötger from the Communications Department is offering an introduction to science communication.
