📢 Big News: SBTi to allow carbon credits for abatement of Scope 3 related emission The SBTi Board of Trustees has made a significant decision to broaden the use of carbon credits for abating Scope 3 related emissions, transcending existing limitations. Addressing Scope 3 emissions presents a big challenge for many companies, given their substantial, indirect nature, often lying beyond direct operational control. While it remains imperative for every company to prioritize emission avoidance and reduction within their climate strategy without compromise, the incorporation of carbon credits for Scope 3 targets holds promising potential to bridge the gap in emission reduction necessary to align with the critical 1.5°C limit. The facts are that we are not on track to achieve our 1.5°C target, which include nearly halving emissions by 2030. Nature-based Solutions alone can provide almost 40% of the emission mitigation needed until 2030 according to IPBES. Integrating carbon credits to address Scope 3 emissions could boost the funding for carbon projects as companies strive to meet their SBTi targets. However, it will be crucial for companies to ensure the quality of the carbon credits used, thereby guaranteeing that their utilization actually results in emission reduction or removal. SBTi anticipates releasing an initial draft including basic rules, thresholds, and guardrails for the use of carbon credits in July 2024.   #SBTi #carboncredits #NbS

While climate change is receiving significant attention, the equally pressing issue of nature loss is not getting the same level of focus from companies around the world. Less than 10% of Fortune 500 companies have established nature-related targets. To encourage companies to invest in nature, it is essential to present a strong business case. Companies must understand the value of acting now instead of reacting to the consequences of nature loss in the future. Our collegue Ricarda Röller explains in this illuminem article what dimensions play a significant role in demonstrating the value of investing in nature: ⛓ Mitigating supply chain risks 🚀 Creating a competitive advantage 💰 Responding to capital market requirements 🏛 Preparing for regulatory requirements #naturebasedsolutions #naturepositive #voluntarycarbonmarket

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞? Businesses are prioritizing climate action but often overlooking biodiversity loss. Ricarda Röller stresses the urgent need for private capital in Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to close a $4 billion financing gap. Despite the potential of the voluntary carbon market, company commitment is lagging. Röller argues that investing in nature will mitigate supply chain risks, create competitive advantages, and align with future regulations. To what extent should businesses focus on the voluntary carbon market, or should they invest in other NbS? Hallo! Was kostet das? UBi - Unternehmen Biologische Vielfalt The Landbanking Group goodcarbon B.A.U.M. e.V.
