Last week I was privileged to attend the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings in physics and I am grateful towards Isabelle Staude and Thomas Pertsch, the Bayer Foundation and the Foundation Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings for making this unique experience possible for me. The last week was filled with many interesting talks, by both the laureates as well as fellow young scientists and I have left the meeting feeling inspired. I want to extend my appreciation to all the laureates, staff and sponsors for making this event truly unforgettable. #LINO24

June marked the wrap up of the 13th edition of the two-day “𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬-𝐎𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐦 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠y” held by Monika Monika and Dimitrios Gkiatas, PhD from 𝐪𝐩-𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡.𝐞𝐝𝐮 at the Abbe Center of Photonics, where we focused on Quantum Entanglement, Quantum Communication as well as showcased diverse applications of Photonic Quantum Technology. Exciting Visit by jenny eichler and Ozge Cagaloglu from Avocadofilm (https://avocadofilm.com/) to our Abbe Center of Photonics (ACP) Lab at Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU)! This Wednesday we had the pleasure of welcoming Avocadofilm to our lab at ACP/FSU Jena. It was a nice experience to showcase our cutting-edge research and innovative projects. The film team was here to produce an image film for Jena and the FSU for international students and it was a fantastic opportunity to share our passion for photonics and quantum technology. Our team demonstrated the silicon nitride integrated photonic circuits designed by our team at Fraunhofer IOF and FSU and fabricated by Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI, highlighting our commitment to advancing integrated photonics and quantum technology. Special thanks to Sabine Müller and Laura Kaden from the International Office at FSU, David Zakoth and Johannes Kretzschmar from LICHTWERKSTATT JENA – Open Photonics Makerspace for making this visit successful. #FysicsFunFact: Sandpaper contains #SinglePhotonEmitters. #LetMeExplain: Boron nitride is an industrial grinding agent. It's also a 2D-material. And it contains #SinglePhotonEmitters, which work at room temperature. While not of perfect quality they are ideal for teaching and possibly for large-scale mass market applications of #QuantumTechnology. In https://bit.ly/3XQvxsF my colleagues Falko Schmidt and Tom Kretzschmar with support by Sebastian Ritter, ANAND KUMAR, and Tobias Vogl go through the painstaking work of quantatively analysing the abundance and quality of such #SinglePhotonEmitters and compare fabrication recipies (with a focus on simplicity). Here are my key takeaways: - #SinglePhotonEmitters are quite abundant in #hBN powder - they have reasonable performance and are dirt-cheap - they work at room-temp. - they are ideal for teaching & experiments, - preparation matters, good recipies are simple straightforward and do not need toxic chemicals - quantitative studies are hard. Require dedicated leaders and students to get the job done. Start preparing your personal #SinglePhotonEmitters today! The #Quantum is waiting. Amazing talk of Arnan Mitchell of RMIT University on the power of integrated frequency combs at ARC Centre of Excellence in Optical Microcombs for Breakthrough Science (COMBS), yesterday at Abbe Center of Photonics and Fraunhofer IOF This highlights some of the potential future use cases for #LNOI #PICs and the general importance for lithography solutions for optics in genral.

AWARD-WINNING RESEARCH INTO 2D MATERIALS A team of researchers from Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena and Fraunhofer IOF consisting of Prof. Andrey Turchanin, Dr. Antony George, Dr. Christof Neumann and Dr. Falk Eilenberger (Fraunhofer IOF)  have been awarded the Thüringer Forschungspreis (Thuringian Research Prize) for their research into so-called 2D materials. These 2D materials have unique properties and are therefore suitable for a range of promising applications, e.g. in the field of secure data transmission or in lighting systems.   This is because the materials are efficient mediators between electricity and light and can act as direct semiconductors. The newly developed manufacturing process also makes it possible to integrate these nanomaterials into optical fibers or photonic chips so that they can not only conduct light, but also generate, change or detect it. For the first time electronic, photonic and optoelectronic components that are extremely small and powerful at the same time can be produced with the innovative process.   For this scientific innovation, the researchers were awarded the Thuringian Research Prize (Thüringer Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft & Digitale Gesellschaft) on June 18.
