"In our work at Exazyme, AI isn't just a tool; it's a catalyst that breaks barriers and unlocks new possibilities in biotechnology. Our interdisciplinary team of machine learning and biochemistry experts operates at exactly this intersection, knowing precisely where and how to apply AI for maximum impact." - Jelena Ivanovska, CSO at Exazyme Last week, Jelena joined Nicole Büttner, CEO of Merantix Momentum, and Noha Radwan, software engineer at Inceptive, at the AI Breakfast. They discussed their diverse career journeys, spanning backgrounds from robotics to biochemistry, and explored the transition from academia to startups. This shift demands resilience and curiosity, accelerating ideas beyond the slower pace of academic environments. Starting or joining a startup involves convincing customers, partners, and investors of your vision, requiring clear proof of concept and data-driven narratives. Transparency and demonstrating tangible impact with evidence are crucial for gaining investor confidence. Successful ventures also hinge on effective team building and leadership. Embracing interdisciplinary teams fosters innovation by integrating diverse perspectives, while flattening hierarchies promotes a culture where creativity thrives and the best ideas prevail. They further delved into AI's transformative role in biotechnology, and in particular how Exazyme and Inceptive are driving innovation in this field. #startup #ai #biotech #aibreakfast

Developing biotech faster and cheaper using computational power 💻🔬 In our CLIB webinar “Machine Minds, Bio Solutions: Redefining Bioprocess & Enzyme Engineering”, we and more than 140 participants dived into the topic of developing enzymes, processes, and products faster using artificial intelligence and machine learning. Our speakers Victor Guallar from the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Dr. Lukas Pluska from Exazyme, Matthew Thompson from Biomatter, and Maximilian Siska from the Forschungszentrum Jülich presented their work and research on the topic: They talked about using virtual data to fill in gaps of experimental data or training an AI-powered large language model like ChatGPT to speak “protein”. They showed how to reduce the need for experiments by the factor of one thousand, how to build new-to-nature proteins, even from scratch, by combining generative AI and physics, and how to find the right experiment within a multi-dimensional cloud of opportunities to accelerate the development. In a final discussion with all speakers, we discussed the standardisation of data, computational power needed, and how communication between biotechnologists, engineers, and data scientists can work. Most of the participants probably learned as much about AI as the CLIB team did, especially about all the possibilities to use these powerful tools to design biotech processes of the future. 🚀🔍 Thank you to all speakers and participants for joining us and to our projects FuturEnzyme and BiodeCCodiNNg Doctoral Network for supporting the webinar. 🙏🌱

Last week, we attended #TOA24, where we connected with both local and international startups and VCs to discuss the latest technology trends. This year, the Tech Open Air showcased technology with the potential to shape a better future, including Climate Tech, Health Tech, SynBio, Web3, and AI. From breakthroughs in cancer treatment, alternative food sources or longevity, over quantum computing and AI, to harnessing Europe's innovation, and building and scaling deep tech startups, the conference covered it all. It was fantastic meeting everyone and exchanging ideas. Looking forward to continuing these important discussions!
