Exciting news for the meteorological community! ⚡ We have started disseminating pre-operational data from #MTGI1's Lightning Imager, providing weather forecasters in Europe, Africa, and beyond with unprecedented insights into storm activity. This is set to improve the monitoring and prediction of severe weather, offering crucial support to communities and industries like aviation. By observing abrupt changes in lightning activity, forecasters will be able to better predict the development and severity of storms 👏 For more information and to watch all videos in full, please visit: https://bit.ly/4ckBouP European Space Agency - ESA Leonardo Space

European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites. Monitoring weather and climate since 1986.
Info
EUMETSAT is the European operational satellite agency for monitoring weather, climate and the environment from space. We operate a system of meteorological satellites that observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces – 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This data is supplied to the National Meteorological Services of the organisation's member and cooperating states in Europe, as well as other users worldwide. The service provided by EUMETSAT helps to enhance and safeguard the daily lives of European citizens. They aid meteorologists in identifying and monitoring the development of potentially dangerous weather situations and in issuing timely forecasts and warnings to emergency services and local authorities, helping to mitigate the effects of severe weather and protecting human life and property. This information is also critical to the safety of air travel, shipping and road traffic, and to the daily business of farming, construction and many other industries. Account monitored Mon-Fri 09:00-18:00 CET. For general enquiries, please contact: press@eumetsat.int For user support, please contact: ops@eumetsat.int

🚀 MTG-S1 is one step closer to launch! Despite its massive size, the Meteosat Third Generation – Sounder 1 satellite travelled extensively to successfully complete rigourous testing, and is now ready for its journey to the launch site and final prep. The tests confirmed that the satellite can withstand the harsh conditions of launch and space, and that its communication systems are fully functional. “The entire test process ran smoothly and we are now very confident that we can successfully go through these very sensitive few weeks after the launch of MTG-S1” say Julia Hunter-Anderson and Maria Alonso, leading the LEOP tests. 🌍 Every year, around 2,000 million tons of dust enters the atmosphere, darkening skies and harming air quality in regions that can be thousands of kilometers away, and affecting economies, ecosystems, weather and climate. Much of this is a natural process, but a large part of it is the result of poor water and land management. 📈 Monitoring and forecasting accuracy has improved in recent years due to the progress of numerical models and observation systems. The WMO Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (SDS-WAS), set up in 2007, strives to improve warnings through dedicated regional centres and combines research and operational work. 🌾 It is not all bad news. The long-range transport of sand and dust across oceans is also a valuable source of nutrients and important for the international management of fisheries. 🗣️ #SDSDay

Earth Atmosphere Scientist - Satellite observation for air quality and climate - Operational processing Copernicus (EU) and EUMETSAT
A very busy #airpollution season nowadays in the North hemisphere! Outstanding amount of #aerosol particles are swirling across seas, oceans, and continents. They result from: - large wildfires in #Siberia. Part of this #smoke even goes to the very high latitude in the North! - large fires In #Canada. Resulting #smoke travels from West to East across North America and may go into the Atlantic ocean. - Saharan dust blowing across the #Mediterranean basin, and the #Atlantic ocean. - other #dust storms across #SaudiArabia. All these events remain under strict operational monitoring with #Copernicus #Sentinel3 satellites and Near Real Time #NRT processing by EUMETSAT. With #ClimateChange, we know the risks of wildfires remain very high!
