📢 This week, the German government announced a major tender for long duration energy storage systems (500 MW) as part of the Power Plant Safety Act.  A first called is planned for end of 2024 / beginning of 2025. 📄 BMWK's official press release: https://lnkd.in/dtRhvSr6 ▶ German Federal Minister Robert Habeck said “the Power Plant Safety Act represents the bridge to a comprehensive, technology-neutral capacity mechanism, which is intended to make use of demand flexibility and storage in particular.” ⚡ The ERLG welcomes this recent announcement, as accelerating #electrification by building out long-duration energy storage and improving power transmission is at the centre of our mission. The Energy Resilience Leadership Group convened at #BESummit24 in London to discuss energy resilience in today's evolving political landscape. Key highlights: Rondo Energy, Breakthrough Energy #Catalyst, the European Commission, and the European Investment Bank (EIB) announced €75 million for three industrial decarbonization projects in Europe, including GreenLab in Denmark and Covestro in Germany. These projects will provide low-cost, continuous, zero-carbon steam and power, replacing natural gas. BBVA and Malta Inc. signed an #MOU to develop financial solutions for Malta’s first-of-a-kind energy storage project in the Iberian Peninsula. https://lnkd.in/dnu5zNB4 Ann Mettler, VP of Breakthrough Energy #Europe, emphasized the urgency of replacing imported gas with domestic renewable energy, highlighting the climate, economic, and national security benefits. My Learnings from this Year’s Future Cleantech Festival It's rare to find a cleantech event where heavy industry CEOs interact with climate tech founders, politicians listen to decarbonization experts, and industry leaders present groundbreaking solutions instead of lobbyist talking points. The #FutureCleantechFestival in #Remscheid, hosted by our friends at Future Cleantech Architects, is one such gem. This truly industrial city supports innovation and transformation like few other places in Germany. We need more of this technical depth to achieve #netzero. Key Takeaways: 🔥 Launching a New Initiative on Industry Heat  Decarbonizing industry is possible today with innovative technologies. However, speed is essential. To advance the heat agenda, we launched the "Community of Practice for Industry Heat", uniting climate tech innovators and industrial players. More info: https://lnkd.in/dd98qGwH 💸 Affordable Green Energy is Key  The biggest barrier to industrial decarbonization is the high cost of renewable energy. Despite the extremely low production cost, excessive surcharges and taxes can inflate renewable energy prices for industry by over 500% – we need immediate action! 💶 Exploring Alternative Financing  We've seen various financing solutions for renewable energy, including communal investment models, virtual Purchasing Power Agreements (#vPPA), and many more. Can similar approaches help scale climate solutions in industry heat and other cleantech verticals? Yesterday’s high-level meeting of the Energy Resilience Leadership Group brought together Germany's leading foundations, senior policymakers including Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, Climate Tech founders, and special guest Breakthrough Energy founder Bill Gates. It was a unique opportunity for more collaboration, mutual learning, and clear commitments to closing the financing gap in climate tech!   Here's a glimpse of the discussions that took place:   🌍 Learning from Each Other: German #foundations are poised to glean insights from each other and their counterparts in Europe and the U.S. on effective financial and programmatic support for scaling cleantech innovation.   💡 Unlocking Growth Finance for Hardware Scale-ups: European Climate Tech Founders made a compelling case for the strategic importance of closing the financing gap for first-of-a-kind (#FOAK) production facilities for growth, jobs, and a net zero economy.   🚀 Catalyzing Ambitious Investments: #Foundations emerged as key players in bridging the chasm between Venture Capital and other financing sources such as Institutional Investors, Banks and Infratech Funds.
