My Learnings from this Year’s Future Cleantech Festival It's rare to find a cleantech event where heavy industry CEOs interact with climate tech founders, politicians listen to decarbonization experts, and industry leaders present groundbreaking solutions instead of lobbyist talking points. The #FutureCleantechFestival in #Remscheid, hosted by our friends at Future Cleantech Architects, is one such gem. This truly industrial city supports innovation and transformation like few other places in Germany. We need more of this technical depth to achieve #netzero. Key Takeaways: 🔥 Launching a New Initiative on Industry Heat Decarbonizing industry is possible today with innovative technologies. However, speed is essential. To advance the heat agenda, we launched the "Community of Practice for Industry Heat", uniting climate tech innovators and industrial players. More info: https://lnkd.in/dd98qGwH 💸 Affordable Green Energy is Key The biggest barrier to industrial decarbonization is the high cost of renewable energy. Despite the extremely low production cost, excessive surcharges and taxes can inflate renewable energy prices for industry by over 500% – we need immediate action! 💶 Exploring Alternative Financing We've seen various financing solutions for renewable energy, including communal investment models, virtual Purchasing Power Agreements (#vPPA), and many more. Can similar approaches help scale climate solutions in industry heat and other cleantech verticals? Corporate #greenbonds and #securitization could share the cost, risk, and return of green infrastructure projects. 🤝 Collaboration is Key Meeting partners at the Future Cleantech Festival is always valuable. It’s great to see again many Tech for Net Zero members making their way to Remscheid, including Maria Leis, Julius von der Ohe, PhD, Sophie Dres, Frederick Lessmann, and Fabian Sacharowitz, as well as our partners at German Energy Agency (dena), Breakthrough Energy , and BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt joining us. Special thanks to DIROSTAHL Karl Diederichs GmbH & Co KG and Schmitt Wilh. & Co. Kirschenwerkzeuge for hosting us at your manufacturing sites, showcasing industrial transformation firsthand. Big thank you to Peter Schniering, Leonie Brand, and the entire #FCA team! #TechForNetZero #ClimateTech #Sustainability #ClimateAction #NetZeroEconomy #Startup #VC #Cleantech #EUElections2024 #EU2024 Tech for Net Zero Breakthrough Energy German Energy Agency (dena), Pia Dorfinger René Böhm Philipp Offenberg Maria Leis Julian Joswig Sibylla Heckmann Theresa Jahr Raphael Putz; Thomas Röhrl, Florian Nitzinger

Yesterday’s high-level meeting of the Energy Resilience Leadership Group brought together Germany's leading foundations, senior policymakers including Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck, Climate Tech founders, and special guest Breakthrough Energy founder Bill Gates. It was a unique opportunity for more collaboration, mutual learning, and clear commitments to closing the financing gap in climate tech! Here's a glimpse of the discussions that took place: 🌍 Learning from Each Other: German #foundations are poised to glean insights from each other and their counterparts in Europe and the U.S. on effective financial and programmatic support for scaling cleantech innovation. 💡 Unlocking Growth Finance for Hardware Scale-ups: European Climate Tech Founders made a compelling case for the strategic importance of closing the financing gap for first-of-a-kind (#FOAK) production facilities for growth, jobs, and a net zero economy. 🚀 Catalyzing Ambitious Investments: #Foundations emerged as key players in bridging the chasm between Venture Capital and other financing sources such as Institutional Investors, Banks and Infratech Funds. The #WIN Initiative jointly lead by the Bundesministerium der Finanzen and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action can play a key role in initiating such a hybrid #InfraVentureFund. As Germany moves forward with shaping the #WIN Initiative to mobilize institutional investors for climate tech, let's ensure there will be a real commitment to #FOAK Finance for Climate Tech. 💚✨ 🙏 A heartfelt thank you to Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch and EVP Anne-Laure de Chammard for hosting the gathering at their #Berlin Headquarters, including a tour of the new #electrolyzers factory, as well as to Ann Mettler and Philipp Offenberg at Breakthrough Energy , Dr. Heba Aguib at BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt, Helmut Schoenenberger at UnternehmerTUM, and Tobias Lechtenfeld at Tech for Net Zero for co-organizing the day. Thermal energy #storage has enormous potential to boost Europe's #energyresilience, as demonstrated by #ERLG members such as KRAFTBLOCK, Rondo Energy, and also Malta Inc (which reconverts heat to power).
🔎📗 We took a closer look at Systemiq Ltd.'s report on ETES, or electricity-charged thermal energy storage. The big headline: Plants like our Net-Zero Heat System can reduce the equivalent of 8% of natural gas consumption by 2030 and up to 30-40% by 2050. This translates to a reduction in global greenhouse gases of 2% and 14% by 2022. 🇪🇺 🇺🇸 The report is based on data from Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, and the ERCOT region in the US. It includes a wide range of global data sources as well as about a dozen technology providers such as ourselves. 🌡️ The report starts with the technology, but uses an average of 700°C for sensible heat storage, the majority of current technology providers. Since our storage under construction at PepsiCo operates at 800°C and we are looking at our current maximum in the steel industry of 1,300°C, this is already an indication that our technology is above the average shown in the report. One area that is often overlooked in the discussion of technologies is integration into power systems. The report notes that ETES can ✅ Prevent curtailment by providing additional load shifting, resulting in less investment in grid expansion ✅ Prevent some of the projected growth in peak electricity demand by providing the flexibility during periods of high demand on the grid. Between 6% and 30% of peak demand can be reduced by 2030 by installing our Net Zero Heat System instead of e-boilers alone. ✅ It can also generate electricity and be a bi-directional storage system. However, the efficiency of electricity generation is low. According to the report, CHP can achieve an overall efficiency of 95%, but this must be viewed critically and analyzed on a case-by-case basis. The maximum efficiency of electricity generation with heat is currently around 40%. 📈📊 From our point of view, the market potential has been calculated very conservative, also due to the 700°C assumption. The first wave until 2030 includes only medium-temperature processes below 400°C. The report states that this wave will cover 3,100 TWh, 8% of on-site gas consumption, and reduce 2% of global emissions by 2030, which is about the amount of GHG emitted by air travel worldwide today. The total impact of the system is higher, and can be up to 1.7 times these numbers, as ETES enable more renewable energy production. The total potential is projected to potentially grow to 10-14% of 2022 energy related GHG by 2050. 11,400 to 15,900 TWh of decarbonized heat are shown here, which again is conservative for the potential. In terms of cost, there is a great need to reduce grid fees, which makes owning renewable energy sources or private wire the most attractive option right now. "This private wire option can reduce the LCOH by about 25%-75% depending on the region and renewable energy source". #energystorage #thermalstorage #industry #decarbonization #electrification
