🎉 Let's give a warm welcome to Zeynep Nisan Gündüz, the newest addition to the Earlybird Health Investment Team! Berlin-born and raised, Zeynep is no stranger to the local ecosystem and brings valuable experience to the table. She recently completed the Founder Associate Program at Atlantic Labs & FoodLabs, working alongside the founders of two early-stage healthcare startups apryl and Every Health. Zeynep has also undertaken visiting positions at Kry and Moss and is active in the 2hearts community. She holds a Master's in Impact Entrepreneurship and Innovation from Nova School of Business and Economics, and a Bachelor's in International Management from Freie Universität Berlin. Over the past two years, I've worked closely with several founders, supporting their fundraising efforts and taking on various growth roles. Being in the trenches has helped me understand the challenges of healthcare companies - especially regulatory and operational hurdles - and has sharpened my ability to identify disruptive technologies. All of this has primed me not just to keep pace but to push boundaries and contribute to the success of Earlybird Health. 💡 What aspects of healthcare innovation excite you the most? I'm particularly fascinated by the potential of personalized medicine and real-time health data, as well as the broader impact of digital technologies in MedTech and biopharma. These advancements hold much promise to improve patient outcomes and make healthcare more tailored and accessible. As a strong advocate for shifting from reactive to proactive care, I believe in emphasizing early intervention. This transformative approach could revolutionize people's lives. 🧠 How do you stay informed about emerging healthcare trends and innovations? Primarily by talking to people, keeping the conversations with industry experts going, and also acknowledging that there will always be topics where my knowledge is not exhaustive. It’s a mix of staying open to learning, being curious, reading a lot, and tapping into the wealth of knowledge of the people surrounding me. ✍️ Communications at a VC is a nice niche! It’s also a big part of how funds bring visibility to portfolio companies and share expertise across a broad audience. We are excited to reinforce our small but mighty communications team with one more American. So please welcome (back) Rylee Mora, a former working student with Earlybird, who joins Earlybird's operations as a Junior Content Manager. She’ll be contributing to the creation & curation of insightful content in all formats – showcasing our stellar portfolio companies and the teammates backing them. Rylee hails from sunny California where she studied at the University of Southern California and completed her undergraduate degree at Bard College Berlin, A Liberal Arts University. We spoke with Rylee about her Earlybird experience, her particular interest in AI, and living abroad. Discover more in a short Q&A below:  🐣 What surprised you since joining Earlybird? I knew it was a smart move to join Earlybird but I didn’t realize how inspiring my day-to-day would be. Very quickly, I was surprised by how I could utilize my creative background in philosophy, art, and literature to inform how we communicate the vision and milestones of our portfolio companies. I can do this through supporting many aspects of Earlybird including the Investment Teams, Vision Lab Program, and Startup Success Team.  🤖Your university thesis centered on Ethics & Narratives of AI. What compelled you to write about that? Studying the origins of political economies inspired me to consider how we can build ethical frameworks. Reading the classics such as Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau, I envisioned how one could and should write a contemporary treatise on AI. This seed of interest paired with my passion for storytelling, sparked new questions I sought to answer: What stories have we been telling ourselves about AI and how are they informing our ethical considerations? To my surprise, these stories of AI begin a lot sooner than you might imagine, appearing in ancient Greek and Chinese literature. 🌍 As an American in Berlin, what do you like about living in Europe? I had my experience of living abroad while studying at an international school in London at age 15. 🗓️ As we approach Vision Lab program Cohort 5 Demo Day (July 11), meet one last participating company – Figo Social. Figo Social, founded by Yannick Skop and Clara Gillet, is on a mission to redefine the daily experience of retirees, by making it convenient to discover and book activities from local vendors. 💡 What was the initial idea or reason you founded your startup? We both had family members who struggled significantly with the transition into retirement. Although retirement should be a joyful time, people underestimate how difficult it is to suddenly reorganize their lives around new routines for the upcoming 20+ years. We decided to change that. ⛰️ What is the biggest challenge you face? We noticed quickly that the investor pool willing to bet on our target demographic (retirees) and our business model (a ClassPass-style marketplace) is much smaller than when we worked in B2B SaaS. But we're lucky to be backed by a small but strong group of VCs and angels who believe in the company's potential. 🐣 Why did you join Earlybirds Vision Lab? We've followed Earlybird's work in the Berlin startup scene for many years. When we heard from our Antler friends at randevu.tech that they had a positive experience at Earlybird's Vision Lab, we immediately applied.
