Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU): Exploring Its Role in Sustainability 🏭💧 ️🧪 Let's dive into the final component of the Green Energy Strategy Institute report: Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU), a critical element in Korea's potential sustainable production pathways. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗖𝗨?🤔 CCU involves using captured carbon dioxide as a feedstock for chemical processes, producing the same chemical products as fossil-fueled processes. This makes captured carbon a viable alternative source for Korea. 𝗖𝗖𝗨 𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗮 In Korea, CCU is seen as a complementary sustainability measure, but should be used sparingly due to the current high carbon footprint of the electricity grid. The carbon capture process itself is energy-intensive, and the production of hydrogen for CCU via electrolysis requires low-carbon electricity, which is currently a challenge in Korea's energy mix. Therefore, extensive use of CCU could increase the current emissions compared to the fossil-fueled chemical industry. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 🌍⚡️ CCU is a promising technology in our quest for sustainability, particularly given Korea's limited carbon supply from recycling and biomass. However, two significant issues need to be addressed: 1. Hydrogen Production: A large amount of hydrogen is required to produce synthesis gas or methanol in CCU, and it must have a low carbon footprint. Currently, hydrogen produced via electrolysis has a high carbon footprint due to Korea's electricity grid mix. 2. CO2 Source Selection: The selection of suitable CO2 sources must consider availability and not create carbon lock-in effects from fossil fuel supply infrastructure, among other things. These challenges make CCU an imperfect solution at present. To fully benefit from CCU, we must decarbonize our energy mix, and reduce overall consumption. Alongside efforts to recycle plastics and use biomass, ensuring the availability of low-carbon electricity is critical. 🔋🌱 While CCU can be a valuable component of our sustainability strategy, it should be employed judiciously to minimize environmental impact. Key Takeaways from SAP Process and Manufacturing Industry Meeting on Sustainability in Zurich 🏔️ 🌿 Carbon Minds’ Co-Founder & ETH Zürich professor, André Bardow, alongside our Managing Director, Arne Kätelhön, participated in SAP’s Executive Exchange for Sustainability Officers in Discrete & Process Industries. The event centered on transforming sustainability practices, adapting business models, and strengthening brand presence in the market.   Key learnings from the event: ▪ Aligning Business with Sustainable Practices: Beyond mere compliance, sustainability is a critical element in maintaining a competitive advantage and driving market success. ▪ Effective Measurement and Management: We must redefine roles and processes and utilize new technologies to address increasing complexities (such as carbon accounting and ESG management) to effectively measure and manage our goals. ▪ Collaborative Ecosystem Approach: Addressing sustainability requires intensified collaboration across organizational boundaries (such as Scope 3 management and human rights due diligence). To continue our progress, we must foster ongoing dialogue and build trust in our partnerships to achieve more sustainable outcomes. A special highlight of the event was the keynote by Carbon Minds co-founder and ETH professor André Bardow: “Do you speak carbon”. André illustrated the Scope 3 challenge and demonstrated how #betterdata can enable efficient climate action. Big thank you to SAP for the invitation and the chance to exchange ideas with industry experts. 💡
