The amount of CDR (Carbon Dioxide Removal) required in 2050 is mind blowing. To stay under 1,5° or 2° of global warming various projections expect 4,5-9 Gt CO2 per year, while we will only have 0,015 Gt in 2025. This will be an enormous challenge, but at the same time it is also a huge opportunity for startups, established companies and also for individual careers. Where else do you find brand new industries with annual growth of 24-27% over a time span of 25 years? The DVNE study predicts 335,000 to 670,000 new jobs in Europe's CDR industry by 2050. For young people, this emerging field offers significant career opportunities to grow with the industry. It also fulfills the need for a sense of purpose in your job. Climate startup focused on negative emissions.
Info
Let us counter the climate crisis with something optimistic! Our basic idea is: let us not despair because nowadays everything is so awfully slow. Instead let us make sure that the technologies and organizations will be ready when they finally will be put to use by the societies / governments of the world. Our focus is on the topic of negative emissions because this is what will rescue mankind form the biggest damages due to the changing climate. Because we not only have to reduce CO₂ emissions to zero, we also have to filter the excess CO₂ already emitted from the air.

Congratulations to the 44.01 team and CEO Talal Hasan on this major step in the company‘s development. As an early seed-investor we are proud that we were able to help pushing the waggon a little bit into the right direction. 👏
We are delighted to announce our $37m Series A Fundraise. The investors who have committed to 44.01 include climate leaders, geological carbon storage experts and global technology developers. The round is led by Equinor Ventures with Shorooq Partners in the UAE, as well as (in alphabetical order) Air Liquide Venture Capital (ALIAD), Alumni Ventures, Amazon's Climate Pledge Fund, Climate Investment (CI), Innovation Development Oman, Planet A Ventures, Salica Investments Oryx Fund, Siemens Financial Services, Sumitomo Corporation and several other investors. Existing investors including Breakthrough Energy Ventures have also recommitted to 44.01’s technology by participating in the round. This fundraising will enable us to continue refining our technology, expand internationally, and build commercial-scale mineralisation projects. Thank you to all our investors for demonstrating their confidence in our mineralisation technology. We’re looking forward to working together to make mineralisation at scale a reality. What is CDR, or "Carbon Dioxide Removal"? The study "CARBON DIOXIDE REMOVAL -- Europe and Germany's Role in Catalyzing a Trillion-Euro Industry" by @bcg and #DVNE quotes the @IPCC_CH's definition as shown here. Read the full study: https://lnkd.in/deqVHXN7

All IPCC pathways to net zero by 2050 include CDR. Current climate policy rightly focuses on reducing carbon emissions by shifting away from fossil fuels in electricity, transportation, buildings, and industry. Solutions like point source carbon capture and storage (CCS) also help. However, achieving net zero requires more than just emission reductions. The IPCC, IEA, and other research institutes state that removing carbon dioxide (CDR) from the atmosphere is crucial to limit global warming. CDR is necessary to offset emissions from tough sectors like steel, cement, and chemicals, and to address historic emissions, which can linger for centuries. Every IPCC pathway to keep warming below 1.5°C or 2°C includes some form of CDR to tackle residual emissions that can't be reduced due to technical or cost limitations. Existing climate policies fall considerably short of achieving the critical 1.5°C target. Despite the 2015 Paris Agreement's emphasis on capping global warming at 1.5°C as a measure of effective climate action, the world remains off target. Over 96% of global greenhouse gas emissions now come from nations committed to this goal. However, current measures fail to align with this objective. We see a substantial gap between our present course, the nationally determined commitments (NDCs) for reducing emissions, and the routes needed to keep global warming under 2°C and 1.5°C. This stark disparity highlights the urgent demand for heightened political resolve and a more expansive toolkit of solutions. At @carbon_drawdown when we think about carbon dioxide removal projects with enhanced weathering we have 3 major concerns: 1. Avoid making things worse, 2. Being able to show CDR is happening, and 3. Making sure the economics will work at scale. 1. Avoid making climate or environment worse (i.e. increasing instead of decreasing soil's CO2/GHG efflux caused by rock amendments or decreasing crop yield or damagen from other aspects of the EW process like toxins). 2. Make sure enhanced weathering does actually do atmospheric carbon dioxide removal (i.e. being able to quantify carbon removal from the atmosphere, e.g. by measuring increased alkalinity in the leachate), which turns out to be more complex than most people anticipated. 3. Enable the growth of a new EW industry that will be able to scale to gigatons in 2050 (e.g. by making EC financially/economically/policywise viable, so that future profits attract the necessary massive influx of capital).

Greenhouse Adventures: A journey through unexpected obstacles (Part 2) Keeping a long-term monoculture greenhouse experiment with hundreds of pot experiments alive and working over 2-3 years is not as easy as one could think. In our latest blog post, we share the interesting journey of combating various pests like powdery mildew, thrips, and aphids which all have tried to wreck our EW greenhouse experiment. For every possible intervention we must consider the potential effects on our weathering experiments. Discover how we used a natural raw milk treatment to successfully eradicate powdery mildew, leaving our plants healthy and thriving. Learn about our creative approach to managing thrips with lacewing larvae and predatory mites. Despite some initial challenges, our efforts paid off, resulting in a significant reduction of these pesky pests. Finally, read about our battle with aphids and how ladybug larvae became our new allies. These tiny, beneficial insects are helping us keep aphids at bay, ensuring our plants remain vibrant and healthy.
