Add feature

[edit]

I often rename files which have extremely long filenames to shorter names. This enables the filename to be read in the title bar on displays of more resolutions. I wish that there were other options in this tool to include such rationales or an "add your own" rationale option. Blue Rasberry (talk) 15:09, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The tool only reflects the policy: COM:FR. It was not build to encourage file renaming but for consistency in the user interface for users without file moving rights. There are lots of reasons why file moving often causes trouble and some admins will send death threads if I would add more options. See for example Commons:Village pump/Proposals/Archive/2011/08#Provide a rename-link for files or this one. If you want a policy change, you have to discuss that at the policy's talk page. -- Rillke(q?) 23:30, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

help

[edit]

I came here to learn how to move a file. Not how to become a file-mover. -DePiep (talk) 01:00, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing out this shortcoming. I have added an explanation into the text. There is a big screenshot on top of the page (that will get a red arrow) and there is also a link to Special:MyLanguage/Commons:File renaming in the first sentence. -- Rillke(q?) 08:33, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Good you kept calm after my frustration ;-) -DePiep (talk) 01:30, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
...but it still is not clear. I still have to read through "if you are an admin it's easy" paragraphs. The essential {{rename|newname.ext|rationale number|optional text reason}} is mentioned after some clicks, but |rationale number= is not explained. Sigh. -DePiep (talk) 01:38, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Research lead me to Template:Rename. Maybe there is something there. -DePiep (talk) 01:41, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if you use the "move"-link provided by this gadget ("RenameLink"), which this help page is about, you do not have to care for {{Rename}}. RenameLink provides a User Interface allowing you selecting the reason and filling-in the new file name. Finally tick the checkbox that you accept our policy and press the confirmation button. Using AJAX, RenameLink then inserts the template for you. -- Rillke(q?) 08:00, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:File_renaming#How to rename a file? {{rename|newname.ext|rationale number|optional text reason}} where rationale number can be clicked and you end up at a big table where the first column is … a number. |rationale number= will not work. Use unnamed parameters like you did there.
May I ask you how you came here? Do you see the "move"-link? Why did you prefer adding the template by hand over using the gadget? Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 08:10, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
RenameLink does not help anything because you only get a picture gallery but no idea how to rename or even find the file.HJHolm (talk) 07:29, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Opt out pages

[edit]

@Rillke: would it be possible to opt out prefixes for certain pages? I host a lot of galleries and the renaming on them is unnecessary and a hassle for users. See Special:PermanentLink/200395699#User:OgreBot/Uploads by new users.

Also, I'm not sure if you maintain the other file mover tool; that one should probably be fixed too. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 03:42, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming a file

[edit]

I clicked on the tab "Move" to rename a file, but nothing happened except that the tab dissappeared. What did I do wrong? How do I move a file? Bandy Hoppsan (talk) 13:59, 11 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

??? It is a pity that one willing to correct an own typo under an own picture, you have to muddle through pages over pages of essays, only to end in circulations.HJHolm (talk) 07:24, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I love how this comment is saying that it's a pity that OP is willing to correct their own typo, yet says "an own picture," when it should be "your own picture." The Master of Hedgehogs (talk) 21:18, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming marked red

[edit]

Commons can drive you up the wall. One circulation after another. After renaming my file according to a suggestion of an intellignet "helper", and choosing option "1...", the choice is marked red. Without any recognizable mistake. You can do NOTHING. It is a pity!HJHolm (talk) 07:17, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
