Wiki Loves Earth 2022 in Tanzania results ?

[edit]

Hi !

Thank you for these Wiki Loves Earth events every year, I think they really bring a lot to the project.

I am however still waiting for the results of Wiki Loves Earth 2022 in Tanzania since almost two years. I tried to contact directly the organizers of the 2022 edition and received no answer. So I was a bit surprised that the 2024 edition was announced for Tanzania will still not having the 2022 results. I tried contacting the 2024 team to know when the results of 2022 would be published but also received no answer.

I still have some pictures that I could upload for the 2024 edition but I am a bit scared that they turn out abandoned like in 2022...

Also could it be possible to qualify the 2022 winners to the 2024 edition since they had no chance to run for the international round of the WLE contest ?

Thank you in advance for your answers !

Warmest regards,

Wiki Loves Earth in The rest of the World ?

[edit]

Hi again !

I just wanted to share an idea that I had this morning and that I think could greatly benefit the project if it could be implemented.

I have many pictures that would be eligible to WLE but that unfortunately where taken in countries that do not participate to WLE since a long time or never participated (India, France, Costa Rica, Mexico, Colombia, Bahamas, Iceland, Greenland, etc.).

And I am sure that many other people are also hoping that WLE would be available as well in other countries.

In the Wiki Science Competition 2023, they had this brilliant idea to have many national organizers and one "The rest of the World" organizer.

This basically permits to have pictures from all around the world participating in WSC and also saves pictures that were uploaded in a national organizer that finally was removed as they could be transferred to the rest of the world part.

If the same principle would be applied to Wiki Loves Earth, having a Wiki Loves Earth in the rest of the World, that would allow to gather so much more useful and beautiful pictures from all around the world that would greatly benefit the wiki project. This would bring more diversity to the contest and allow to highlight nature/wildlife from less usual places.

As you already know, many people joined wiki/commons thanks to WLE (myself included). Also, many pictures uploaded to WLE end up used in Wikipedia. Stats of users that registered after the start of the competition available here as well as percentage of images used in the wikis.

So I really hope that this could eventually be implemented one day.

Thank you for reading this and wishing you a beautiful sunday.

Recurring statistics problem

[edit]

Hi, Armenia is not in the statistics yet, can anyone help. Every year this problem arises. We are already uploading pictures, and our images here. Beko (talk) 09:29, 2 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Videos

[edit]

We have a new section this year on videos. Is there a category? I've created Category:Videos from Wiki Loves Earth 2024 in Wales this as a pilot, for consideration. Please advise. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 07:40, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rule against AI-generated images?

[edit]

While it's implied by the rule that submissions "must be original photographs uploaded by their authors", it might not be a bad idea to add something in the rules which explicitly states that AI-generated images are not eligible. Omphalographer (talk) 19:51, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How should an AI generated image fulfill the requirement to show a protected area? GPSLeo (talk) 04:30, 11 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Explicitly stating the ineligibility of AI-generated images would be unnecessary since they aren't photographs. Zzzs (talk) 00:07, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Protected areas?

[edit]

@Houss 2020, Hommi2020, نعيم قربوسي, and TOUMOU: . The WLE rules state that images must be taken in protected areas or those formerly protected. The locations listed by WLE in Tunisia include many areas that are not protected in any way. Why is is permitted? How is the jury to make its choice? Many winning images would have to be excluded from the International competition. Many excellent images have been uploaded which is very valuable so there is no shortage of eligible images. Charlesjsharp (talk) 00:04, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your message and for bringing this important matter to our attention.
The WLE (Wiki Loves Earth) rules indeed emphasize that images should be taken in protected areas or those that were formerly protected. The intention behind this rule is to highlight and promote the beauty of natural heritage areas that are under some form of protection.
Regarding your concern about the locations listed by WLE in Tunisia, it appears there might have been an oversight or miscommunication. We are currently reviewing the list to ensure that all included areas meet the required criteria of being protected or formerly protected.
As for the jury's selection process, we will be providing them with updated guidelines and an accurate list of eligible locations. This will ensure that their choices adhere strictly to the rules, thereby maintaining the integrity of the competition. We understand the importance of this issue, and we are committed to resolving it promptly to avoid any confusion or unfair exclusions.
We acknowledge that many excellent images have been uploaded, and we appreciate the effort and passion of all participants. Rest assured, there is no shortage of eligible images, and our goal is to ensure that all qualifying entries have a fair chance in the competition.
Thank you once again for your vigilance and for helping us uphold the standards of the WLE Mounir TOUZRI (talk) 09:42, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much; that is reassuring. I think most of my images will be excluded! I should have read the WLE rules before uploading them using the Tunisia upload page. Charlesjsharp (talk) 07:32, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
