Colobot: Gold Edition

Colobot: Gold Edition (Colonize with Bots) is an educational game with a component of real-time strategy, in which your goal is to find a planet where the human race can establish a new colony. To do so, you will have to deal with any extraterrestrial life forms you may encounter as you explore. More importantly, you will have to program robots using a proprietary programming language similar to C++ or Java. With the help of these robots you will be free to perform almost any task on this new planet.

A game in constant development

The first version of Colobot: Gold Edition from the Epsitec SA studio was made available in 2001. In 2012, this Polish studio released the source code of the video game, which led ICC and TerranovaTeam to take over the development. Since then the game has received several periodic updates, adding features and improvements, which have not only stabilized the game, but also modernized it and improved its graphics.

A wide variety of game modes

Colobot: Gold Edition offers players a variety of different game modes. The Missions, on the one hand, serve as a tutorial and allow you to experience the game with a progressive learning curve. On the other hand, there is a Free Game mode in which you have total freedom to do whatever you want on the surface of a planet. The Exercises and Challenges modes allow you to practice some of the more complex parts of the game, such as robot programming. And as if all this were not enough, there are also the Custom Levels, a mode that allows you to create your own levels.

Educational strategy and lots of fun

As with many strategy games, the mechanics in Colobot: Gold Edition are easy to learn, but difficult to master. You control your character with the movement keys and interact with the setting using the mouse. With these simple controls you can move around each planet, construct buildings and interact with aliens. To program robots, on the other hand, you will need to use the keyboard. This is by far the most complex part of the game, although with the help of the tutorial in the Missions Mode, you will be able to learn how to use some of the most basic functions.
