Events | Join us for the ACAW 2024 Symposium in August! The Architectural Ceramic Assemblies Workshop (ACAW) is a hands-on research and development event for teams of architects and façade engineers to explore the use of #terracotta in design. In its ninth year, a group of UNStudio colleagues from our Austin office are heading to the symposium, partnered with Walter P Moore. UNStudio Senior Architect and Associate Jay Tsai, Junior Architectural Designer Kevin Kunnappilly, and Architectural Designer Justin Brammer will talk about their research findings in the materiality of terra cotta with our Research + Innovation team, using the Wasl Tower project as a case study. Airport terminals are some of the busiest and most restless public spaces. Providing cozy resting areas and a moment of relaxation can make a world of difference for travelers amidst the hustle and bustle. 🛫✨ The Landmark Space in Incheon International Airport Terminal 2 aims to create a microclimate within the airport interior where passengers can eat, drink and find a moment of calm along their journey. In our design, two pavilions each house food and beverage locations with a lounge and seating area connecting the two. The design of the built-in furniture facilitates multiple types of interactions, ranging from more quiet and concentrated spaces to highly public and social zones. Earlier this month, our founder and principal architect Ben van Berkel, associate director and senior urban designer Dana Behrman, and Mónica Palfy Alonso-Alegre participated in the jury of the final thesis projects of our first year with the IE School of Architecture and Design MArch studio, focusing on researching and designing circular living spaces. During the event, Ben, as the Chair of the MArch, and Dana, as the Associate Professor, were joined by David Goodman, Dean of IE School of Architecture and Design; Marcela Aragüez, Director of the Master in Architecture at IE University; Fernando García Pino, Director of the Final Thesis Project MArch at IE University; Enrique Jerez Abajo, Final Thesis Project Professor at IE University; Mónica García Martínez, Assistant Professor of Architectural Design; and invited juror Paz Martín Rodríguez from FÜNDC Architecture+. The Dutch Pavilion for the Osaka World Expo 2025 aims to address a significant issue: climate change. With such a crucial topic, we applied a strategic mindset to turn challenges into opportunities; the heavy was turned into light, the relevant into accessible, and the weighty into play. The result? A pavilion conceived as a playground, injecting a much-needed lighter perspective into a challenging topic. The structure allows the visitor to embark on a harmonious journey, a sequence of play and collaboration with flora and fauna, and the earth; where innovations come to life, securing healthy and happy lives for all. 🚀 Remode landed in Frankfurt! Huge thanks to everyone who joined us at the Remode launch event at Massif Central in Frankfurt. It was a pleasure meeting you all and presenting our highly sustainable, ergonomic and adaptable task chair, designed in collaboration with Ahrend! 🪑💚 During the event, UNStudio Associate and Head of Product Development, William De Boer, and Director Strategic Development Machteld Kors delivered insightful presentations on our design philosophy towards vitalizing workspaces. Rolf Verspuij, CEO of Royal Ahrend, provided an in-depth exploration of #sustainability. We were also honored to have Carina de Lange, Head of Innovation and Product Development at workingwell GmbH, and Dr. Stefan Rief, Head of Research Department Organizational Development and Work Design at Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO to share their visions on the future of organizational development, and the interplay between physical environment and #creativity. William, Rolf, Carina and Stefan later engaged in a panel discussion. The event was hosted and moderated by Felix Kröncke and Clarissa Alfrink. Once completed, STH BNK by BEULAH will encompass a total of 253,485 sqm in the heart of #Melbourne. A vertical city within a city, STH BNK by Beulah will host programme across recreation, retail, offices, residential, hotel and exhibition spaces. Here, our design with local architect Cox Architecture was motivated by the concepts of togetherness, joint ownership and open access for local residents and the wider community. We therefore created the space not only to be accessible and tailored to the users of the building, but also for the people of - and visitors to - Melbourne. At the heart of the project is an elevated civic square, childcare, cultural podium and wellness precinct connected together within a public realm, giving Melburnians and visitors a space of creative play, reflection and recreation. If we envision the Future Farm today, what (public functions) would it need to include? Welcome to the future Farm - a research and vision project in which we explored the possibilities and impact of future farming methods on the physical environment. Recent technological developments have enabled numerous early examples of urban farming initiatives, and these are likely to significantly increase in the not-too-distant future. Techniques for vertical farming are also developing rapidly. Recent developments in ‘controlled environment farming’ enable extremely high yields and highly efficient use of space that is incomparable to traditional greenhouse farming. Sunlight is not required anymore, and plant nutrients are being used more efficiently than ever before.
